Olympic critics and organisers speaking on most Mondays from Sept. 14to Dec. 7 - initial dates below, full list to be sent out soon. Prof.Helen Lenskyj here on Monday Sept. 14th, 5pm for the first speech at Green College (UBC)!
1. Monday, Sept. 14: "Challenging Olympic industry power and propaganda.” Prof. Helen Lenskjy (Univ. of Toronto). Prof. Lenskyj is an expert on the Olympics and the author of three books on the impact of the Olympic Games.
2. Monday, Sept. 28:“The IOC, Olympic dreams, and the media.” Laura Robinson. Robinson is a freelance journalist and writer working out of Toronto.
3. Monday, Oct. 5: "The hidden 4th pillar of the Olympic Games: privatized profit, socialized debt.” Prof. Chris Shaw (UBC). Prof. Shaw is the author of ‘Five Ring Circus: Myths and Realities of the Olympic Games’ and is a long time Games critic.
Later topics include: environmental impacts, the Olympics as a part of corporate globalisation, civil liberties issues, housing and poverty, the Olympics on unceded Indigenous land, and IOC corruption. Speakers' presentations begin at 5pm. The lecture will be in the Green College Coach House which is just off of NW Marine Drive (going north on Cecil Green Park Road which starts on NW Marine Drive near the Chan Centre just east of the Museum of Anthropology).
