Appeal for Family after Housefire:‏
We have received a call from a Somali immigrant family whose home was gutted by a fire. The couple have eight children and all clothing, furniture and other vital household items were lost.

As people who are unemployed and living on social assistance, their only means of redress was in the form of a $1,500 community start up allowance. For a family of this size that has lost literally everything, this is a totally hopeless provision. They are presently crowded into temporary accommodation with very few of the things they need.

If you are able to help, please send a cheque to OCAP but earmarked 'fire' and we will pass it on to the family.

Before leaving the subject of OCAP, here's an interesting little feather in their cap. From the OCAP website...
OCAP was honored to be the 2009 recipient of the Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven Award for putting the ideals of the Caucus for a New Political Science, "to make the study of politics relevant to the struggle for a better world," into practice.

Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven not only made major contributions to the study of poor people's resistance but also were participants in the fight for social and economic justice for poor people in the 1960s and 1970s. Their book Poor People's Movements: Why They Succeed, How They Fail has been an important resource and point of inspiration for many members of our organization. It is a great honor and privilege to have been given this award and we would like to thank the members of the Caucus for a New Political Science for this recognition.
