INSITE FOR COMMUNITY SAFETY CAMPAIGN
CALL FOR SUPPORT
WHAT: PEACEFUL VIGIL IN SUPPORT OF INSITE
WHERE: PEACE FLAME PARLIAMENT HILL, OTTAWA
WHEN: THURSDAY JUNE 5TH
To Volunteer 2pm set up
Focus time for picket 3:00pm
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
With less than a month left in the current extension on the exemption, which allows InSite to operate, now more than ever, our communities must come together in solidarity. We will gather on Thurs in peace on Parliament Hill to put pressure on the Federal Government to demonstrate responsible decision making in policies that effect Canadians deeply.
Recent news declares the BC Supreme Courts reached a decision in favour of Insite, however an appeal by the Health Minister is in the works. This appeal is a symbol of the Conservative Government's unwillingness to recognize harm reduction as an effective means to approach drug related issues.
Insite For Community Safety is an initiative of the PHS Community Services Society which co-manages InSite, North America's only Supervised Injection Facility, and whose purpose is to act as an umbrella for individuals and groups across the political spectrum who do not usually work together, but are united now to build a comprehensive, made-in-Canada drug strategy.
Joey Only and Leah Martin, volunteers with the campaign, set out Tuesday May 13th to visit the constituency offices of prominent conservative MP's who hold significant opposition to the science of Insite. Their goal was to reach out to their communities with the message, "before they were "junkies" they were kids".
Join us and many others in making a community statement that harm reduction, of all kinds, was here before the conservative government took their lead, and it will persist into the future!
