ANARCHIST FILM:
LOVE AND ANARCHY:
The (take a deep breath) Insurrectionary People's Picture Show Theater here in Winnipeg is a local site devoted to showing the best of anarchist film and video. To my great pleasure their Friday offering was Lina Wertmüller's 'Love and Anarchy'. I've always been a great fan fan of Wertmüller's, and I sincerely hope that the IPPST will show some of her other films in the future. Also there is a previous short for those of us here in Winnipeg ie a documentary about the workers' co-op 'Organic Planet'. Now, I have to say that I have never been a great fan of the "organic food" movement, but the Organic Planet has other things to recommend it ie a commitment to local sourcing and the fact that it is a producers' co-op. Check out the two recent offerings above, and the many more on the IPPST.

Trash Palace presents
THE NEPTUNE FACTOR
(Daniel Petrie, 1973)
Friday, July 31
Doors @ 8:30 - films @ 9:30
$5
Advance tickets at Eyesore Cinema, 801 Queen St. W
Secret location (address on the ticket)
Continuing my semi-regular showcase of all-Canadian fromage, this week we offer a screening in the true spirit of Toronto Summer '09 - a big pile of waterlogged trash! The main event is THE NEPTUNE FACTOR.
Ben Gazzara, Walter Pidgeon, Ernest Borgnine and other thespian luminosities head into the unknown depths off the coast of Halifax, in order to rescue the wayward Oceanlab II from the watery depths. There, the intrepid crew is threatened by...poorly matched closeups of tropical fish!
Seriously!!
Can you spell 'fun'?
Director Petrie is better known for high-minded fare like "A Raisin in the Sun"and "The Bay Boy". So make no mistake, the auteur here is really money man Harold Greenberg, the Kingfish in the puddle of Canadian disaster movies (Cityon Fire, Death Ship) and the mastermind behind the Astral Films colossus. This was Greenberg's first film as producer, and his work lives up to his usual standards! You gotta see it to believe it, people - but to give you a taste, here's a hilarious writeup from our friends at Canuxploitation:
And that's not all! In the spirit of the evening, we're kicking things off with a classic short from underwater cineaste Jacques Cousteau - the memorable "Night of the Squid"! Ride along with Jacques as he frolics with the creatures of the deep. Add 'em up and you got a night at the movies you won't soon forget.
See you there kiddies.
* * * * *
And if that ain't enough, details are firming up on yet ANOTHER screening in the coming days, this one in Niagara...it'll be worth the drive...even if you're in Saskatoon(Hey, if you're in Regina anything is worth the drive-Molly) Stay tuned - we're just getting started!!

ANARCHIST FILM:
NOW PLAYING AT THE IPPST:
The Insurrectionary People's Picture Show Theater, a Winnipeg based initiative featuring anarchist film and video is now presenting 'An Anarchist's Story-Ethel MacDonald'. Here's the promo. Drop on by to view the film.
AFAFAFAFAFAFAF
Friday Film: Ethel MacDonald: An Anarchist's Story
This documentary-drama tells the story of Ethel MacDonald, a remarkable young woman whose name hit the world headlines during the Spanish Civil War. She was hailed as the Scarlet Pimpernel of the workers revolution but has since become something of a forgotten legend.
Ethel MacDonald (24 February 1909—1 December 1960) was a Glasgow-based Scottish anarchist and activist and, in 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, a propagandist on Barcelona Anarchist radio.

ANARCHIST FILM:
THE TAKE:
The film 'The Take' , by the Canadian team of Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis, has become something of an 'alternative classic'. It tells the story of how an auto plant in Buenos Aires, Argentina was threatened with closure by its owners and was taken over by the workers involved and reopened as a producers' cooperative. This is the sort of action that Molly has long advocated here, and it was actually done, in a situation such as an auto plant that Molly thinks is doubtful (see my comments on the recent workers' occupation of the auto plant in South Korea). But it did happen in at least one place.
This film is now available for download and viewing at another Winnipeg site, the Insurrectionary People's Picture Show Theater. Check it out over there, and see all the other treats they have available.

Over ninety reviews, with tons of pictures and a special bonus essay at the end!

Plus, for a limited time only, a SECRET BONUS DVD.

You can just picture JC leaning back at his desk and smoking a cigar:

Sweeney Todd - "every time someone utters a note everything freezes dead and it's a cue to get up for popcorn/the crapper."
Murder Party - "the script's stabs at character development need to be improved or abandoned, and rather than surprising us with alternating funny-scary it sometimes sits too long in the middle."
Lola Montes - "the toil of the film-making efforts end up deflecting attention from Lola herself - maybe Martine Carol isn't up for the job like everyone says, but more importantly all that metaphor stuff seems to crowd out time she could use to draw us in."
$6 each.

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-RUSSIA:
SQUATTING-THE FILM:
The following is from the English language section of the Russian anarchist news site Avtonom. It's about the release of a new movie on the international phenomenon of "squatting". Squatting ties into the general anarchist attitude to "property rights" in that those who actually use property should be deemed to have its ownership. This applies not just to residences but also to workplaces. Here's the article.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Squatting. A film by Larisa Matteissen:
Release date 3rd of February 2009 1 hour 25 minutes
The movie follows anarchists and activists, who occupy different empty buildings and territories - from rooms, houses and industrial buildings to complete villages and ports. Dutch and Russian activists are telling about their experiences of squatting and reactions of authorities to self-organisation. Anti-squatters explain why they are in side of the state. You may freely distribute the film for non-commercial purposes.
This is version with English subtitles:
Please seed it!
You may download Russian version of the movie here:

2. JONATHAN CULP PRESENTS
MOUNTIE DOUBLE BILL!
AT TRASH PALACE
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6
DOORS 8:30 - FILM 9:30
SECRET LOCATION
$5
For months now I've been regaling Trash Palace with samples of the OTHER Canadian cinema - the cheesy cash grabs (and genuine artistic successes) of our notorious 'tax shelter' era. Well for this special double bill, I am reaching back even farther, to the original 'commercial' Canadian films, which were in fact not really Canadian at all! I refer of course to the 'Mountie movies' of the 30s, which amount to Westerns on a broken compass...replacing noble Northerners for the good guys and unwashed 'half-breeds' for the baddies!
RENFREW OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED (1937) leads the bill, and is a riotous quickie (in every sense - it clocks in at under an hour). This tale of valor on horseback features good ol' Renfrew jumping out of a plane, pitching woo, and eventually busting some no-good pseudo-Metis who are smuggling counterfeit across the border in - what else - blocks of ice! (How Canadian can you get?)
This Martian's-eye view of our home and native land was a favourite whipping boy for front page pothead Pierre Berton, who found fault with everything from the headgear ("Renfrew appears to be wearing a slouch hat") to the mise-en-scene ("The entire troop of them gallops up to the picnic grounds on horseback singing at the top of their voices"). So if you usually come to Trash Palace for history lessons, steer clear! But if you're looking for something to laugh at, you've got your man.
We then jump ahead almost 40 years to a different breed of mountie - George Segal, slouching through a Vancouver that is almost as seedy as Skip Tracer, in RUSSIAN ROULETTE (1975).
This one is actually a real hoot, thanks to director Lou Lombardo who cut his teeth as editor for the great Robert Altman and Sam Peckinpah! You get lots of wicked deadpan humour and layering (and layering) of subplots to go with the geopolitics - Canadians of this era seem to have been even more obsessed with the Soviet Union than the Yanks, no doubt thanks to that commie Trudeau. You may not know what the hell is going on, but you'll sure have fun trying to figure it out!
Imdb sez:
"Stirring and heart-thumping"
"A tour de force of slick editing and exciting music"
"Hilarious...a wealth of talent involved"
"Engaging and quirky"
So - a very special Trash-fest, two great movies for the price of one, plus the usual 'cold drinks,' hot dogs, popped corn, candy, merch, and yummies from our in-house chocolatier!
Advance tix $5 at Eyesore Cinema, 801 Queen St. West (above Rotate This). Secret location, as always - the address is printed on the ticket, along with a handy map on how to get there! (It's a short walk from the ticket location...)

3. SATAN MACNUGGIT AT GETTAZINE 2!
THURS-FRI FEB. 12-13, 12-5 PM

OAKVILLE
FREE!
The second big Sheridan zine fair is expanding to two days, and we're going to be around for both, selling DVDs and zines (including a brand new one, more details soon...) PLUS I believe I will be stepping up to the mic to sing a couple tunes, a rare treat indeed. If you find yourself on campus, drop on by.

ANARCHIST FILM:
NEWS FROM THE UPCOMING CHICAGO ANARCHIST FILM FESTIVAL:
The Chicago Anarchist Film Festival will be happening again this year, and they're looking for submissions. Here's the callout from the A-Infos website.
.........................
US, 9th Annual Chicago Anarchist Film Fest Seeks Submissions:
Submissions now accepted -
*- For the 9th year the Chicago Anarchist Film Festival will present a sample of films from mainstream sources, rediscovered classics and the works of filmmakers engaged in social change with an anarchist vision. Most media of all types launch attacks that distort, discredit and deny anarchists entirely. Anarchists and their allies respond with a relentless volley of images and stories that reveal, revive and invigorate a rich anarchist presence in society. -
*- Chicago Anarchist Film Festival organizers seek un- and under-distributed films and videos to include in the 2009 Chicago Anarchist Film Festival. We also welcome suggestions for titles that may inadvertently allow anarchy to seep through the cracks of the status quo. Movie collage, music videos and trailers for works-in-progress will also be considered.
Deadline- April 1, 2009
Guidelines
All entries must be submitted with an entry form. A contributors statement and any promotional material is appreciated. Please also indicate if you are available and interested in attending the festival.
Submissions should be DVD (2 copies, any zone) or vhs (pal or ntsc). It may be possible to screen 16mm as well, but we need video for purpose of review. Selection is based on time allocation, relevance, quality and resonance. There are no rewards or prizes beyond our invaluable appreciation and heartfelt thanks, but we will be collecting audience feedback which can be provided to contributors on request. All entrants will be updated on the status of their submissions. We ask the contributions be made with the anarchist spirit of community and celebration with which they will be received.
Solidarity!
Shipping costs are the responsibility of the entrants. Videos will be returned upon request. To ensure prompt return of material, please enclose $3 per submission. Otherwise material submitted to the festival will be donated to a suitable community recipient.

How about Dan Aykroyd's brother Pete? Or the worst Donald Sutherland role of all time, as a disc jockey named Nick the Noz ? Perhaps you'll take a plot involving a gas shortage brought on by stolen milk ? Can I sell you on an array of gross racial stereotypes with names like GuidoVespucci, Lee Kwan and Fawsi Ibn Fawsi ? Would you believe a HALF HOUR car chase ? With cardboard English street signs taped on to the Montreal originals ??
>From the director of "Hog Wild"?!?!
Aww, some people are never satisfied. Well maybe I can win you over with some glowing reviews from imdb...let's see now... "A movie to forget!" "If you want bad, this is your movie!" "Sloppy, idiotic, severely witless and desperate!" "I still kick myself for the night I visited the multiplex and chose this thing over "Arthur!"" "This incoherent waste of someone's ability to raise funds!" "I found myself actually looking FORWARD to the commercials!" "To be avoided, this movie bites!" "Everyone who appeared in this one is a bad, bad person!" "Worst film of all time, bar none!"
In other words, my friends: this movie was MADE for Trash Palace! Be there.
Advance tix $5 at Tequila Bookworm, 512 Queen West!
The Trash Palace address is printed on the ticket, along with a handy map on how to get here! (It's a short walk from the ticket location...)

RED SHIFT
AT THE 8 FEST
FRIDAY, JANUARY 30, 9 PM
AT TRASH PALACE (see above)
COST TBA
Red Shift (2009, 40 minutes)
Super 8 collage
with live accompaniment by Picastro (Liz Hysen, Nick Storring, Brandon Valdivia)
In this long piece commissioned specially for this year’s 8 Fest, filmmaker Jonathan Culp creates a hypnotic, rhythmic collage of commercially produced Super 8 material. Cutting between faded Eastman color industrial films,classroom-film curios, and Hollywood imagery old and new, the pictures interlock with the haunting semi-acoustic dissonances of local band Picastro, performing live with the film. Red Shift is a slowly disintegrating nightmare of utilitarian media gone wrong.
Presented as part of THE 8 FEST (January 30-February 2) Now in its second year, this is Canada's only film festival dedicated to exhibiting work on small gauge film. It's a lot of fun. Find out more atwww.the8fest.com, or join the soon-to-be-resuscitated Facebook group at:

ANARCHIST FILM:
SKIP TRACER:

Coming up tonight ! 'Skip Tracer' Gulp at the Trash Palace down Toronto way. From the Satan Macnuggit news service.
.............................

SATAN MACNUGGIT NEWS
NOVEMBER 2008
SKIP TRACER AT TRASH PALACE!
Friday, November 14, doors 8:30 – show 9:30
SECRET LOCATION – tickets @ Tequila Bookworm, 512 Queen St. W
Toronto
$5
This one is so good, we’ve actually previewed it! And you are in for a treat.
“Skip Tracer” is the standard bearer for the little-remarked “Vancouver New Wave”, a loose collection of out-of-nowhere arty winners from our West Coast compatriots. And it earns its reputation – deliberate without being static, seedy but full of empathy as well.
A tale of a ruthless debt collector who inflicts untold misery on Vancouver’s downtrodden masses before slowly seeing the error of his ways, this flick is funny, touching and horrifying, all in unpredictable combinations.
While the content may be typical 70s-Canuck street-level realism, the form is something else: controlled, austere, almost minimal shooting style, with a disarming undercurrent of surprise that never, ever topples into the dreaded ‘quirky’.
All you lowbrows can relax - there’s some nice sex and violence when you need it; plus, for the camp enthusiasts, tune in for just about the worst, cheesiest, least appropriate music score in the history of cinema! It’s like they pulled in the first passer-by and handed them a Casio. (Where’s Paul Zaza when you need him) But it doesn’t matter.
Take it from Greg, waaay back in Eclectic Screening Room #3: “If cinema had more artists like Zale Dalen who made films from the heart, on the edge, with a level head and a lot of nerve, the art form of the 20th century would be in a lot better place.”
Big screen or small, this movie does not come along every day, so catch this rare 16mm print before it disappears back down the Canuxploitation memory hole!
Plus the usual prizes, surprise shorts, vintage video games...and Episode Six of Bela Lugosi in “The Phantom Creeps”! How many times will Bela turn invisible? Whose car will blow up? Has that robot had a badly-needed enema?
Find out! (By the way, it’s a good week for Canadian movie fans – there’s a FREE 35mm screening of William Fruet’s “Death Weekend” at Innis Town Hall tonight! 7 pm –St. George and Sussex – check it out!)

ANARCHIST FILM/TV:
CHRISTIE BOOKS ANARCHIST FILM CHANNEL CLOSES UP SHOP:
It's a sad day. The Christie Books anarchist film channel has been forced to close up shop due to demands from their server provider. Here's the announcement.
...........................
Christie Books anarchist film site to close:
Brightcove (or film server provider) has just informed us that as of December 17 they will be closing their network account programme ‹ which is the service we are using ‹ and moving to a new platform, Brightcove 3. As the charge for transferring our film archive will be £26,000.00 and we have only received donations totalling £30.00 to the film archive since it launched last year, we are unlikely to be able to continue providing this service beyond December 17 this year. We are looking out for other servers and service providers so if anyone has any suggestions please let us know.
Meanwhile, there are 760 unusual and interesting feature films, documentaries, shorts, talks and some animations up there ‹ so if you haven't checked them all out yet you have just over a month to do so before they disappear.
Hasta la vista!

at Trash Palace

Yes, for one night only Trash Palace and I team up in presenting this super-rare and spectacular 16mm print of "Deadly Eyes" - Robert "Enter the Dragon"Clouse's tax shelter epic of mutant, er, rats running riot through TTC, GrangePark, and Old City Hall of early 80's vintage. Check out these imdb reviews:
"Great entertainment if you're drunk...a total cheesefest!"
"a couple of adorably gross and hectic sequences, for example in a movie theater or in the newly finished subway tunnel."
"Yes, I know they're dogs in rat suits but they look convincing and the scenes of them chasing victims are scary."
"this carries one of the most hilarious scenes in cinematic history - seeing Scatman Crothers' body getting dragged down a set of stairs by mutant rats!"
"amazingly rubbish acting"
"Meant to be watched in total disbelief."
Seriously, I am extremely fond of this movie and am ecstatic to be able to share it with an adoring public. Catch these rats before they scurry back into the hellish darkness...! Popcorn, candy and beverages as usual, plus special treats from Siue's chocolatier apprenticeship! **SEE BELOW FOR MORE EXCITING MOFFAT UPDATES!
Lots more goodies coming up at Trash Palace (including our long-awaited Educational Films marathon on August 1!) - but if you've been putting off that clammy trash handshake, this is surely as good a time as any!

JC ON CINEPHOBIA!
FRIDAY, JUNE 20 - 2 PM
CKLN - 88.1 FM
Yeah, "Deadly Eyes" is just the tip of the iceberg - I have been delving deep of late into the storied but little-seen depths of 'tax shelter' cinema - the speedy and shoddy flood of cash-grab films made between 1974 and 1987. From the enormous pile in the living room, Stuart and I have selected five titles -revenge, juvenile comedy, shot-on-video action, plus of course deadly rats.Tune in to hear our deathless insights on this stuff, plus clips, ticket giveaways, and other stuff I don't even know about.

"LICKIN' THE BEATERS"

After selling out her self-published first run of "Lickin' The Beaters: Low Fat Vegan Desserts", Siue Moffat had her title picked up by PM Press (a brand new imprint under the AK umbrella) - they'll be publishing her brand-new cookbook in the coming months, but for now we can celebrate the arrival of the original Lickin' The Beaters in a handsome second edition - shrunk but unabridged, for all those who missed it the first time or got their old one covered in gunk. For more details visit www.dairyfreedesserts.com or email Siue at beaterlicker@yahoo.com ! Yay!

THE PARKDALE FILM + VIDEO FESTIVAL
PRESENTS"DEATH MASK"
FRIDAY JUNE 27, 9 PM
REVUE CINEMA
Yeah! Formerly Rehab will be showing my audience-favourite "Death Mask" video (preview it at www.satanmacnuggit.com) alongside countless other film and video treasures at this year's screenings! Check out the whole festival June 27-29.The PR says:
"REHAB is an eclectic showcase of films and videos and media art by artists who live and/or work in the dynamic Parkdale community...A rare dose of defiant and whimsical film and video, the REHAB festival is intended not to purify the neighbourhood, but to jump start a collective kind of visual and cultural infusion...Cross-cultural neighbours, fringy as well as professional image-makers all converging on a hot weekend evening in June - a microcosm of Toronto's unique arts scene."

CUT AND RUN
A Near North Mobile Media Lab project
On the last weekend in July, I will be lending my insights to the editing team on this spectacularly ambitious project from the folks in North Bay:
"Cut and Run will be created over the month of July and August and will involve four weekends of workshops to produce an 80-90 minute broadcast quality feature video. Teams will work on script writing, storey-boarding, shot planning, shooting and editing, in this order. The first team will surrender their weekends work to a new team on the following weekend. Each successive team must work with whatever they are given, hence the project name Cut and Run."
I'll keep you posted on the results!
