CANADIAN LABOUR-HAMILTON
HELP THE 'GOOD SHEPHERD WORKERS IN HAMILTON:
The following is an appeal for online solidarity from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). It's about the case of 50 women employed by the Catholic social service charity Good Shepherd in Hamilton, Ontario. These workers are asking that the bosses 'ante-up" and show their "charity" and "social conscience" to their workers.

Please take a moment to help 50 women workers who help women and children at a social service agency in Hamilton Ontario.
They're struggling to earn a living wage themselves and are facing a strike or lockout by July 14

THE LETTER:
I am writing to urge you to offer a fair contract to CUPE 5167 frontline women’s services staff and prevent a strike that will hurt vulnerable women and children.
As leaders in Good Shepherd Centres, you must lead by example and pay women workers a living wage. Your workers are paid 25 to 30 per cent less than other shelter workers in neighbouring municipalities.
Your staff help women and children overcome emotional, physical and financial difficulties every day. How can you expect them to perform their duties with their heads held up high, when they themselves are struggling financially while working for the Good Shepherd?
This is your opportunity to show and live the Good Shepherd mission statement which proclaims to ‘strive to enhance the quality of life for all who seek assistance and support’.
A living wage is essential to live a quality life.
We urge you to do the right thing for your staff and for the community you serve.
