INTERNATIONAL LABOUR IRAN:
ANOTHER ATTACK ON BUS WORKERS UNIONISTS IN TEHRAN:

Another attack on Vahed Syndicate members

5 November 2010

The ITF has received news of yet another thuggish assault and detention of Vahed Syndicate members by Iranian police/security forces.

According to the ITF the attack took place on Wednesday in a Karaj internet café. Saeed Torabian, publicity director of the bus workers’ union – who has previously been arrested and then released following international protests – was with fellow trade unionist Gholamreza Gholamhosseini. Gholamhosseini was released on bail from Evin Prison two years ago, after being arrested while attending a Women’s Day event.

Shortly after their arrival six men entered and beat them up, yelling that they were thieves. They were then dragged out and taken to prison. After being interrogated, threatened and roughed up, Saeed Torabian was released on bail, but as yet nothing is known about Gholamreza Gholamhosseini – except that he is still being held.

The ITF considers these ‘arrests’ to be the latest in an ongoing campaign to break the Vahed union and notes that once again trumped up charges, threats and violence have been used to stifle normal, lawful trade union activity.

CANADIAN POLITICS TORONTO:
SUPPORT RYAN RAINVILLE:

The fallout from the recent G20 police riot in Toronto continues to come down. More charges have been dropped, and more investigations are being set up to investigate police conduct during those days. Some people, however, continue to be prosecuted even though it is doubtful that even one single rioter involved in the riot that police allowed to happen will ever be charged with any real crime. One of these who was arrested elsewhere on flimsy evidence is Ryan Rainville, a native activist. Here is an appeal for support for him in his latest upcoming court appearance. From the Community Solidarity Network in Toronto...

Court Support for Ryan Rainville--Tuesday, Nov. 9
Ryan Rainville has had a court adjournment for his bail hearing from Thursday Nov 4th to Tuesday November 9th. Ryan will reappear on Tuesday November 9th at 9:30am at Superior Court of Justice, 361 University Avenue in Toronto, for his bail review. Please join his family, friends and supporters in the courthouse to show support to Ryan, who has been in jail since his arrest on August 5th 2010.

Ryan has been targeted as an Indigenous Sovereigntist from the Sakimay Nation, and charged with allegations stemming from June demonstrations against the G20 in Toronto. Ryan was denied bail in early August, and is being held at Maplehurst Correctional Complex.

His supporters would like to request that friends and allies come to the
Superior Court of Justice (361 University Ave) in Toronto to show their
support. Please note this is not a demonstration but a call for appropriate court support.

AMATEUR ASTRONOMY:
JOVIAN SHADOWS:

Coming up in our night sky this weekend which, miraculously enough, is predicted to have clear nights skies.... With only a small low power telescope you'll be able to witness a rather unique event as all four of the Galilean moons of the planet Jupiter casts shadows that will be visible on the planet's surface. Jupiter can be easily spotted in the next few nights as it rises in the southeast and gradually makes its transit across the sky to the southwest as dawn approaches. It is quite bright ( -2.7 magnitude), and is in the constellation of Aquarius near to Pisces.

Tonight is also the peak night of the Taurid meteor shower, in Taurus of course. While not as spectacular as the Leonid meteor shower due to arrive later this month it has the advantage at least in Winnipeg of having good viewing conditions and relatively clement weather conditions.

Here's more on the upcoming "shadow transits" from the Space.com site.

Jupiter's Moons to Perform Weekend Show for Skywatchers
By Geoff Gaherty

This weekend, a remarkable series of events will take place on Jupiter: The planet's four big moons will cast shadows on the gas giant planet that can be seen from Earth using a small telescope.

The planetary shadow play, which begins Saturday night (Nov. 6) and runs through early Sunday, will be primarily visible from the western coast of the United States. [Illustration: Moon shadows on Jupiter]

The four bright moons of Jupiter are known as the Galilean moons after their discoverer Galileo Galilei. As they revolve around Jupiter, they sometimes pass across the face of the planet as seen from Earth, as well as behind the planet and in its shadow.

How to see Jupiter's moon shadows

First, a word of caution: The overnight between Saturday and Sunday is when we switch back from daylight saving time to standard time, so be careful you get the correct time for your location.

Because the complete sequence of events is only observable from the U.S. West Coast, we will use Pacific Time here to discuss the best viewing times. Observers further east will miss the later events, and should add the appropriate number of hours to the times depending on their location and time zone.

The show begins at 8:53 p.m. PDT (11:53 p.m. EDT) on Saturday (Nov. 6), when Jupiter's largest moon Ganymede begins to cross the planet's face.

Because Ganymede has a relatively dark surface, it appears bright against the limb of Jupiter — but quickly appears to change to a dark gray against the bright central parts of Jupiter's disk. This can be seen with telescopes that have as small as a 5-inch aperture.

At 9:47 p.m. PDT, a second moon — Europa — follows Ganymede across Jupiter's face.

Because Europa's surface is icy, it reflects a much more light than Ganymede, and closely matches Jupiter's cloud belts behind it. As a result, it vanishes in all but the largest telescopes, perfectly camouflaged.

At 10:24 p.m. PDT, yet another moon — the volcanic Io — begins to disappear behind the opposite side of Jupiter.

At 11:52 p.m. PDT, Europa's shadow starts to take a notch out of the western limb of Jupiter. This can be seen with telescopes that have as small as a 3-inch aperture. Two minutes later, Ganymede moves off the disk of Jupiter and is once again a bright spot in the sky.

But wait, there's more — the Jupiter moon show isn't over just yet. Here's a rundown of the movements of Jupiter's moons to watch for on Sunday:

At 12:31 a.m. PDT, Europa leaves the disk of Jupiter.
At 1:12 a.m. PDT, a second shadow, that of Europa, puts the bite on the west limb of Jupiter. We now have two shadows creeping across the face of Jupiter, while the moons casting them are off to the right, a wonderfully three-dimensional effect.
At 1:41 a.m. PDT, Io emerges from Jupiter's shadow, ending its eclipse.
At 2:00 a.m. PDT, Daylight saving time officially comes to an end, and you should move your clock back to 1 a.m.
Now, at 1:34 a.m., Pacific Standard Time, Europa's shadow moves off Jupiter's disk. Finally, at 3:08 a.m. PST, Ganymede's shadow also moves off the disk.
You may be puzzled by the fact that Ganymede leads Europa across Jupiter's disk, but Europa's shadow precedes Ganymede's all the way across.

That's because Europa orbits much closer to Jupiter than Ganymede, so that the angular distance between Ganymede and its shadow is much greater than the angular distance between Europa and its shadow.

CANADIAN LABOUR:
CANADIANS WANT PENSIONS INCREASED:

We live in interesting times. Corporations and the governments that represent them across the "developed world" are frantically trying to pare back the gains that working people have made over many decades. Some of this is an attempt to reduce labour costs to maintain competitiveness in the face of rising industrial producers such as India, China and Brazil. It is also partly an attempt to redistribute the social surplus that flows through government from ordinary people to those corporations that might be said to be "national" (though governments are generally pretty poor judges of such things) once more because of foreign competition. It is also, however, a genuine fiscal crisis of the state that has been building for a long time and has been exasperated by the recent stimulus spending that many governments have engaged in.

Many things, excluding corporate giveaways of course, are being cut back, but pensions have proven to be a particularly sore point as recent events in Greece, Spain and especially France have shown. It seems that the population of many countries have been willing to (sullenly) accept such things as long term stagnant wages and the virtual end of good chances for the social mobility of their children. As I said, sullenly, as resentment over such loses for ordinary people has led to a revival of class based politics in many places, despite its premature obituary pronounced by many pundits left and right.

The attack on pensions across the world seems to be the straw that broke the camel's back. To date the gradually growing realization that things aren't going to get any better has been tempered with an assurance that they wouldn't get significantly worse. If, however, the 'promise" of at least some comfort on retirement is withdrawn it is little wonder that open rebellion has broken out in many countries. Here in Canada where everybody except right wing "think"(sic) tanks agrees that the federal pension system is financially sound the mood of the general population is actually that pension benefits should be increased not reduced. Such a mood will provide a great barrier to the federal government following the European model of cutbacks no matter how much the neocons now in power there would dearly love to do so.

Here's an article from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) about a recent survey of what Canadians think should be done about our pension system.

Western Canadians support increase in Canada Pension Plan benefits
Nov 4, 2010 09:02 AM

More than three quarters of western Canadians support increasing Canada Pension Plan benefits, according to a new national survey. Eighty percent also support increasing federal payments to senior citizens and four in ten believe the government is moving too slowly in reforming Canada’s pension system.

The Future of Pensions poll was completed by Environics Research Group in late August for the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Public Service Alliance of Canada. The national poll surveyed 2,020 Canadians and has a margin of error of +/-2.2 per cent 19 times out of 20. Responses from British Columbia have a margin of error of +/-6.2 per cent 19 times out of 20, and responses from the Prairies have a margin of error of +/-4.4 per cent 19 times out of 20.

“From coast to coast, Canadians support higher CPP benefits," said CUPE National president Paul Moist. “Western Canadians are sending a clear message to federal and provincial politicians who are currently studying ways to improve the CPP."

The survey asked western Canadians their views on saving and their expectations for retirement. While many have set up a Retirement Savings Plan or a Tax-Free Savings Account, 35 per cent in British Columbia and 30 per cent on the Prairies acknowledge that they are not saving for retirement—mostly because they cannot afford to.

Only one in four western Canadians is fully confident that they will be able to save enough to live comfortably in retirement, and three in 10 believe they won’t have enough to live comfortably, with lower income being the most pessimistic.

“Western Canadians are concerned with their capacity to retire in comfort,” said John Gordon, National President of PSAC. “If action is not taken now, poverty will become a dire reality for more and more elderly Canadians.”

Poll respondents also overwhelmingly support increasing Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplements for those living below the poverty line. OAS and GIS payments amount to only $11,000 per year.

The survey also asked respondents for their preference on different types of pension plans. Despite the economic downturn, those currently part of workplace pension plans believe their pension benefits are safe. But more than 70 per cent prefer a defined benefit plan, which guarantees a fixed amount of benefit when you retire, to a defined contribution plan, where the benefits paid out depend on the performance of the investments in the fund.

Together, CUPE and PSAC represent more than 800,000 public sector workers across Canada. Both organizations have been advocating for retirement security for all Canadians.

AMERICAN LABOUR MINNEAPOLIS:
JIMMY JOHNS WORKERS UNION TO FILE UNFAIR LABOUR PRACTICES SUIT:
After recently narrowly (87 to 85) losing the Labour Board election to represent fast food workers at the Jimmy Johns outlets in the Twin Cities the Jimmy Johns Workers Union has filed a detailed unfair labour practices suit against management of the locations involved. One manager in particular engaged in a vicious anti-union campaign. The Union is also continuing to press for its demands in the workplaces despite having lost the election. Here's the story from the website of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).
JJWJJWJJWJJW

Alleging Rampant Labor Rights Violations at Jimmy Johns, Workers Call on NLRB to Take Action on Manipulated Union Election
October 22, 2010 - Sandwich Workers to Continue to Press for Improved Working Conditions.

MINNEAPOLIS – The Jimmy John's Workers Union has filed a 12-page Objection to the October 22 NLRB election at 10 Minneapolis sandwich shops, outlining a pattern of pervasive and systemic labor rights violations that prevented the possibility of a free and fair vote. The union election, a first in fast food in the US, was as close as they come, with 85 votes in favor of the union, 87 against, and 2 challenged ballots.

"Franchise owner Mike Mulligan decided to go beyond the pale. His managers asked workers to wear anti-union pins, fired pro-union workers, threatened a mass firing, implemented an illegal wage freeze, tightened policies and retaliated against union members, offered bribes, and pressured workers to vote no. He broke the law repeatedly in order to win, and he just barely won. That's not right. We are calling on the NLRB to set aside the results of this election," said worker and union member Emily Przybylsky.

In response to his employee's union campaign, franchise owner Mike Mulligan hired a third-party anti-union consulting firm, Labor Relations Inc., to prevent employees from winning an NLRB Union election. According to documents obtained from the Department of Labor, Mulligan spent over $84,500 on an anti-union campaign intended to prevent workers from unionizing.

Tim Louris, of Minneapolis labor firm Miller O'Brien Cummins, is assisting the union pro-bono in navigating the tricky waters of labor law. Union spokespeople say the written objection to the election results will be available to the public within a few days.

While filing with the NLRB to have the election results nullified, the workers also plan to mount a campaign to win their demands without union recognition.

"85 yes votes, in spite of 6 weeks of vicious union-busting, is a mandate for change," said "There are a thousand ways we can put pressure on Jimmy John's to win our demands for fair wages, sick days, consistent hours, and respect. We're fired up, this fight is just beginning," said Ayo Collins, another worker and union member.

The Jimmy Johns Workers Union, open to employees at the company nationwide, is the first fast food union in the nation, and is affiliated with the Industrial Workers of the World labor union. Gaining prominence in recent years for organizing Starbucks workers, the IWW is a global union founded over a century ago for all working people.

On September 10, 2010 two migrant workers Ralston White and Paul Roach died after inhaling toxic fumes at Filsinger's Organic Foods appleorchard and processing facility near Owen Sound, Ontario. On December 24, 2009, Alexander Bondorev, Aleksey Blumberg, Fayzullo Fazilov, Vladimir Korostin, migrant workers without full status, fell to their deaths when the scaffolding they were working on collapsed in half. Though these deaths made the mainstream news, migrant workers and undocumented workers continue to be hurt, to get ill and to die both in Canada or upon being deported to countries they have citizenship in. This injustice must end.

50 years ago, five Italian construction workers, Pasquale Allegrezza, Giovanni Correglio, Giovanni Fusillo, and Alessandro and Guido Mantella, died while working in a dangerous tunnel near Yonge Street in Toronto, remembered as the Hoggs Hollow disaster. Knowing
that workers without full status were facing flagrant workplace violations, negligent employers and little legislative protection from occupational hazards, workers across the city rose up, and carried out a series of actions and strikes in a fight to organize the
building trades.

Today as migrant workers continue to die, labour activists and community groups must gather together, to reignite a new fight. A fight that creates far-reaching changes and challenges the very root of people's inability to access real safety – immigration status and racism.

Join community groups and labour activist to discuss and demand:

** Moratorium on deportations for all workers with WSIB claims and MOL complaints
** Access to Health and Safety without Fear
** Status for injured workers and their families
** Status for All!

FOUND TREASURES:
THE ANARCHA LIBRARY:
The theme of this part of the blog is "found treasures on the internet", and our first item is the Anarcha Library, a relatively new online library of anarcha feminist writings. I have to admit that I haven't finished fully exploring this site, but what I have found so far impresses me. There are literally hundreds of items from across the world on a wide variety of themes from 'Ableism' (5 items) to 'Zine' (89 items). From what I read the two most prominent tags are 'sexism' (131 items) and 'queer' (95 items). A world of reading to explore. Here's a brief sample from an Croatian site.
@F@F@F@F@F

What is anarcha-feminism? (2007)
http://www.zamirnet.hr/anfema/fest/about_anarcha_feminism.php

Difficult question: That's why it's the best to start from the beginning. In the beginning of the story of anarcho feminism, anarchism and feminism were basically different expressions, although they were always a tight connection between them. (E.g. one of the oldest anarchist newspapers of the world "freedom", was founded by the woman and feminist Charlotte Wilson among others). In the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century feminist and anarchist were very active and noticed, for example Mary Wollstonecraft, Lucy Parsons, Voltairine de Clayre and Emma Goldman, who made the connection between anarchism and feminism a very popular idea. Maybe they could even be called the pioneers of the fight for the freedom for women and by that for the society in general. In the 20th century the idea and the movement developed their ways of organising, especially independent groups. They are masked by decentralism, non-structure, non-dogmatism, refusing of one ideology or line and complete despise towards hierarchy as a structure inside the group but also inside the whole society.

Such a way organising & acting stayed until today. Why were the anarchist ideas always so important for the feminist movement?

Anarchism is fighting in its bases with every kind of authorities and their authoritarian systems, also against the authority of the man over the woman and against patriarchy. Authoritarian systems consider the family as a base for their existence. This is what children, and especially female children, in this kind of system learn, from the father to the leader, from the boss to god, is to OBEY. Feminism is fighting against those dogmas of the patriarchy that has always been there, against the systematical domination of the man over the woman within all the structures of the society, against the culture of rape and against all the stereotypes of the woman life as a saint, mother or whore, woman as a sexual object or as a passive individual.

Feminism is fighting for the equal rights of women and men, complete realisation of male and female potentials, and it's aiming to change the "man's world" towards a "world for all people", without caring about gender, age, race, sexual choice. Anarchism gives this opportunity to feminism. And this is the point where anarchism and feminism connect themselves to anarchafeminism. Anarchafeminism recognises patriarchy as the essential weapon of modern capitalistic and hierarchical society, which decides about human everyday life through institutions and family as one of the institutions. That is why I consider that anarchafeminism is a more complete solution than feminism alone, because it doesn't focus on changing situation for only women, but on changing for all people in society, like a total change in society. The problem of women as second (third?) citizens in society is not a separate problem but is part of the whole problematic society of non-equality and authority. And non-equality among people, same as among women and men will exist as long as the relation of superior and inferior is rolled out. The system that still holds this fetish of female inferiority does this because most of all it hates when its authority is touched, when it is provoked. That characterises for all authorities, regardless if it is authority of masters over their slaves or men over women. Anyway the people escape from their cages with big free steps.

Anarchafeminism is a challenge to this system for both women and men, but also a personal challenge in itself, after all the first necessary change is in oneself, and then around oneself. Human passion and need of freedom exists from the very beginning of human kind and the thing is not just in emancipation of women but in emancipation of society, all people. We don't want to be able to do the same as men we want all together to be able to do much more.

And when we succeed, Anarchafeminism will reach its goal. It'll be free to erase itself.

PERSONAL:
HALLOWEEN AT THE MOLLY HOUSE:

Halloween here at Molly's Haunted House of Horrors was a great success, better than last year. Over 150 kids dropped by. As usual I went whole pig on the yard decorations, and both kids and adults got a great kick out of it. I say adults because almost all kids were accompanied by one or two adults. This seems to be a trend that increases year by year. As usual there were the carloads of kids who were driven around town looking for houses with decorations. This was even more prominent this time around because many people from the North End simply didn't feel safe having their kids do trick or treating in their own neighbourhood because of the recent night of three shootings ( 2 separate deaths and one where the gunman opened up on a group of kids for no perceptible reason, almost fatally injuring one girl). Word is that not own my own East Kildonan but also St. Boniface and Hippy Town (Wolseley) had a great increase in kids this year. I guess that people didn't want to drive too far (no reports of such increases out in the suburbs) , but they still wanted to avoid the shooting gallery. Talking to people in the North End, and they said that in their case all kids were accompanied by at least two adults, unlike in past years. The Indian and Métis Friendship Centre held an alternative Halloween party in the North End for people who were too nervous to let their kids out onto the streets at all. Reality can be scarier than fantasy.

Too bad such a night of fun has to be spoiled by such anxiety. For me at least it was great fun even if I didn't have time to put everything up. New decorations this year, people taking pictures of the yard, the usual for what I consider the best holiday of the year. Nothing to do from now until the New Year except accounting and slouching my way towards Christmas.

About Solidarity Across Borders:
Solidarity Across Borders is a Montreal-based network engaged in the struggle for justice and dignity of immigrants and refugees. We are comprised of migrants, immigrants, refugees and allies, and come together in support of our main demands: the regularization of all non-status people (Status for All!), an end to deportations and detentions. Some of us have direct experiences with the immigration and refugee system; some of us come from immigrant backgrounds; all of us organize as part of a collective struggle for justice and dignity. For us, there is no such thing as “illegal” human beings, only unjust laws and illegitimate governments. We organize not on the basis of pity or charity, but rather solidarity and mutual aid.

HELP!
Jailed advocates’ families asks overseas unions, organisations to help

PLEA FOR HELP

Ho Chi Minh City, 26.10.2010

To: Leaders of democratic nations,

Human rights organisations,

Social justice organisations, and

Unions around the world

We, the undersigned,:

- Đỗ Ty, domiciled at Di Linh, Lâm Đồng, father of Đỗ Thị Minh Hạnh

-Nguyễn Kim Hoàng, at 14/12 Bến Chương Dương, P. Cầu Kho, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh City, father of Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng,

- Chiêm Thị Tường Mạnh, domicied at Trà Vinh, wife of Đoàn Huy Chương

We ask that you use your power and influence to help save our daughter, son, and husband, Đỗ Thị Minh Hạnh 25 years old, Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng 29 years, and Đoàn Huy Chương 25 tuổi, to be free from the harsh conviction which the Vietnamese authorities have declared, accusing them of disrupting national security and trying to overthrow the regime, and sentencing them 7, 9, and 7 years in prison.

They are innocent and the conviction is unjust.

PHOTO Doan Huy Chuong in court 26 Oct 2010, flanked by police
They are youths who are patriotic and humane who, for many years, have quietly helped poor people, people whose properties who have been forcibly taken, and workers who have been exploited and mistreated by employers. Those actions are the right thing to do and are not illegal.

But, instead of encouraging such actions which benefit society, eliminate injustice, build a fair society, our loved ones have been arrested by the police and accused under Clause 89 of the criminal act.

Đoàn Huy Chương was arrested on 13.02.2010, Đỗ Thị Minh Hạnh on 23.02.2010, and Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng on 24.02.2010.

During the 8 months of imprisonment without charges, our loved ones were held in isolation and incommunicado, were forcibly questioned, and treated like common criminals. During this whole time, Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng was not allowed any visit by us, he was beaten and we were not allowed to send in provisions for him. From a strong and healthy young man, Hung was physically beaten into a sick and weak man

At the trial on 26.10.2010 at Tra Vinh, the court violated its own trial procedures. Our loved ones decided to defend themselves but the judge did not allow them to speak. The trial was over very quickly and the sentences had been decided beforehand.

When allowed to say their last words, Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng, Đỗ Thị Minh Hạnh and Đoàn Huy Chương strongly denied any wrongdoing and asserted that the court was wrong.

All they have is their love for the country, in their hands they have no weapon, how can they be accused of harming national security?

PHOTO The couple Hung and Hanh, about late 2009
This is a most unjust conviction. Our loved ones are unjustly tried.

After their arrests, we were heartbroken but maintained some hope in justice because they had done nothing wrong. But the court of this regime has caused us pain, we are disappointed in the regime’s justice system.

We cannot find justice in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

We plead for your help, please help end our loved ones’ days in jail.

Respectfully and gratefully yours

Đỗ Ty

Nguyễn Kim Hoàng.
