INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-BRITAIN:
ANARCHISM 2009 PROPOSAL:

The British Anarchist Federation, the English section of the International of Anarchist Federations, has proposed an educational for next year. Here's the proposal via the A-Infos website. I'm sure that further updates will appear on the website of the AF in coming months. A couple of corrections to what appears below are in order. 2009 will be the 40th anniversary of the Battle of the Bogside, not the 20th. Similarly it will be the 70th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War (the "revolution" was a dead letter far earlier, largely courtesy of the communists), not the 40th.
.............................
Britain, AF, Anarchism 2009 - public event celebrating anarchist ideas:
After the success of the Northern educational it was suggested that the AF hold a public event celebrating anarchist ideas. It is going to be a big event with the all encompassing theme of "celebrating cultures of resistance" both internationally and at home. Speakers will be coming from across the country (and the globe) to speak of their experiences in class struggle and the focus of the day will be very much on the lessons that can be learned from our ideas in practice. The year also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the miner's strike, the 40th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Revolution and the 20th anniversary of the Battle of Bogside. These events will be incorporated as central themes throughout the day.
The intention is to hire out a large venue (enough to give us a cinema space, cafe, area for stalls and large meeting area) as well as additional seminar rooms for smaller meetings. Films, music and various other entertainment will be incorporated into the day as well as the more educational stuff. It will be held in June as this will also allow us to generate a great deal of publicity for 2009 G8 (and invite some Italian comrades to come over and speak about the mobilisations).

AMERICAN POLITICS:
STILL MORE ON THE ELECTION OF OBAMA:

As part of her effort to present intelligent anarchist and left socialist comment on the recent American elections Molly presents the following from the Anarchist Federation Blog via the A-Infos site. The AF is the British section of the International of Anarchist Federations.
.......................
Britain, Anarchist Federation on Obama - the Second Coming?:
Below is a collectively produced statement on the election of Barack Obama by Manchester AF.
----
Make no mistake, Barrack Obama's victory in the United States does not mean black liberation any more than Margaret Thatcher's government was a victory for women's liberation. Neither does it herald a new dawn for the world.
----
We firmly expect that the 130 million Americans who voted in the election will soon be sorely disappointed. Obama looks good because he is young, handsome and above all not George Bush. It was becoming clear to many in the USA and the world that George W stole the 2000 elections by fraud and cheating. The wars he has led the US into are increasingly unpopular with over 4000 troops dead and 100,000 injured in Iraq alone.
The press almost all supported him in the election, even the normally right-wing Murdoch empire. Obama is presented as a Mr Clean who will sweep away the stench of corruption that haunts US politics. They say he will save the world from the current economic crisis, the “credit crunch” and recession. Mr Clean he may be, but he spent over $200 million to get elected – more than $40 million a month. Clearly that money is not coming from the poor – a quarter of African Americans live below the poverty line - or the quarter of the workforce in low paid jobs in a country where the minimum wage is $6.55 an hour (just over £4). It is coming from wealthy donors like bankers and financiers Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and companies like Microsoft, whose founder Bill Gates is worth $45 billion.
Clearly these press barons and big companies are going to expect something in exchange.
We expect the wars to continue. Although he promises to pull out of Iraq eventually, the US will need to keep the government there friendly. Troops will be replaced by advisers and security guards, who are in reality heavily armed thugs. He promises to send yet more troops into Afghanistan. Although we expect him to close the hell that is Guantanamo Bay, we doubt he'll do much for the 2.5 million (mostly black and Hispanic) Americans who rot in prison. We doubt the USA will stop bankrolling the racist Israeli regime and its persecution of the Palestinians.
Most of all capitalism is in another of its economic crises. Obama has the backing of the rich and powerful because he will be better able to inflict pain and hard times on the working people in the States and the rest of the world. He has been elected not to bring change. He will stop change happening.
Elections come and elections go. The faces of our rulers come and go. But the need to struggle and fight against the bosses and the state goes on every day. Whoever the Americans voted for, the government got in. We need to be building a fighting alternative, a massive wave of class struggle to finally sweep these parasites off the face of the earth.

VENEZUELA:
OUR OIL AND OTHER TALES:
A CENSORED DVD DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT OF VENEZUELA'S OIL INDUSTRY, BY THE GATTACICOVA COLLECTIVE:
THE MOVIE THE VENEZUELAN GOVERNMENT TRIED TO KILL:
Running time: 80 minutes.
The Venezuelan government had liked previous Gattacicova Collective productions (for example, Another Way is Possible...In Venezuela) so much that they offered financial support for their next project. But the documentary they then made examined the issues of oil production in the country, from its impact on the environment and indigenous population to the way the industry is run.
The bureaucrats in the Ministry of Culture realized that they didn't like such a close look at their involvement with multinational and North American corporations so they tried to suppress the movie. Only with the help of local activists have a few copies escaped censorship.
Now you can watch the documentary that Chavez tried to keep secret...
The Anarchist Federation- London, the British section of the International Anarchist Federation has begun to copy this powerful film, and is making copies available worldwide. All proceeds will go to support Venezuelan anarchists. Copies are:
6.00 Pounds UK orders
6.50 Pounds or 10.00 Euros EU orders
7.50 Pounds, 10.00 Euros or $15.00 US rest of the world
Copies are available from the Anarchist Federation, BM Anarchfed, London, WC1N 3XX, England or see the website above. All prices include postage and handling. Cheques or money orders payable to 'Anarchist federation'.

MORE ANARCHIST PUBLICATIONS AND EVENTS:
A number of anarchist publications and events have come "on line: in the last few days. The publications first:
A: There is an Anarcho-Communist critique of "Insurrectionism" available as a pdf pamphlet download from the Workers' Solidarity site at http://www.struggle.ws/pdfs/leaflets/insurection/insurrectionUSL.attpPam.pdf . The original site at http://www.anarckismo.net/newswire.php?story_id=5285 gives instruction for downloading this pamphlet outside of North America. All that Molly can hope for is that anarchism grows to the point that the NEXT pamphlet is entitled "Anarchism and Silly Violent Cultism: How We Differ", and that not just anarchists would see the use of such a publication but that it would be "obvious" to a growing movement.
Also the British section of the IAF, the Anarchist Federation, has recently published a new edition of 'Resistance'. This publication can be seen at their website along with a number of interesting pamphlets, some of them available in a downloadable pdf format, like 'Resistance'. Readers are encouraged to subscribe to Resistance to support the efforts of our English comrades. The latest edition of resistance includes articles on the fight in Denmark over the Ungdomshutet squat, a comparative report from KFC workers in both Paris and New Zealand, reports on "unofficial industrial action" and much, much more. Go to the AF site for further details or to download their publication.
Now to the events. The Chicago Anarchist Theory Conference has issued a "final call" for their conference on April 27th to April 29th at Loyola University. They intend to present a wide range of anarchist opinion, including some things that Molly thinks don't deserve the title. For further information look to http://mayfirst.wordpress.org and http://findingourroots.info . The schedule is posted on these sites. Finally, there is a call from anarchists in the Twin Cities area (Minneapolis-St Paul) for visitors and solidarity around the upcoming Republican National Convention in 2008.Their name has been borrowed from anarchists up here in Winnipeg ie the G8 Welcoming Committee. The comrades giver the usual set of rationalizations for their efforts which you can see on their call out, and even if they are "narrow" they still testify to a growth in anarchism beyond what it was two decades ago. One can only hope that the commitment to a "diversity of tactics" will eventually expand to accepting ordinary people who don't think fighting cops and losing every last time is how they would like to spend their leisure.
Molly

NEW ANARCHIST PAMPHLET:RESISTANCE TO NAZISM:
The Anarchist Federation (Britain) has published a new pamphlet, 'Anarchist Resistance to Nazism'. This is an exposition of the historical resistance to fascist tyranny in the 30s and 40s. It concentrates on the resistance to Nazism in Germany and France, telling the story of the 'Edelweiss Pirates' (Germany), the FAUD (Germany) and the Zazous (France) . It also, however, speaks of the British Jewish organization, the '43 Group' who resisted fascism in England and the 'Arditi del Popolo' in Italy. The Italian movement, being one of the largest outside of the Spanish speaking world, put up a particularly vigorous resistance to fascism, and an appendix details to anarchist underground press of the time, both inside and outside Italy.
The pamphlet can be ordered in a print version from the website of the AF. It is available in both html and pdf versions online at the following addresses:
