BURMA:

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES:

POSSIBLE GENERAL STRIKE:

As previously reported here on Molly's Blog while the Burmese military rulers have achieved at least part of their goals by preventing large demonstrations in Rangoon (Yangun) people in that city are resorting to "guerrilla demonstrations" made up of small numbers of people who melt away when confronted by the soldiers and reappear at different places. An article in MSNBC gives more information on this. Their reporter managed to get through to Rangoon by a long distance phone call to a veteran of Burma's pro-democracy movement. In addition to this the opposition is apparently making plans for a hoped for general strike. A steering committee to coordinate this action which the the opposition hopes will be joined by civil servants and technical personnel has been formed. Demonstrations also continue in places outside of the larger cities. The article cited in the link above also mentions that some of the opposition are hoping that a split may be developing between the high ranking rulers of the junta and middle and lower level officers who resent both the regimes corruption and its use of force. This sort of split is crucial if the movement for democracy in Burma is ever to succeed. For more on these recent developments see the link above.
