It's near the end of the time of fallen leaves. Halloween is on its way. So is the goddamn snow. But things are warm and cozy at Pollock's Hardware Co-op, Winnipeg's cooperative answer to the big box stores. Here's what's happening there this season.

Just a quick update on events coming up at Pollock's:
Annual General Meeting on November 8th, 2010 at Luxton Community Centre, 210 St.Cross St.
Registration starts at 6:30pm, meeting starts at 7:00pm
The meeting will include:
– The annual report
– Board elections
– Appointment of auditor
– New business
– Door prizes and refreshments!!

Paderno Sale: Starts Wednesday, November 17th, 2010
We have tons of stuff coming in, it's the biggest sale we have had to date!

POLLOCK'S DECEMBER NEWSLETTER:

It's that "wonderful" time of the year when the 30 belows start, cold enough to freeze the nuts off a polar bear, and you're trying to get drunk enough to brave the malls to waste money and time buying gifts for people whom you barely know and who won't appreciate them anyways. The squirrels in the back yard won't come out to get the nuts you put out for them, and all you see of them is one middle finger stuck out from the hole in the garage wall when you shake the nut bucket. Even the stray animals that savage your garbage in the alley rarely make a visit. When you drive you get bruises on your left index finger trying to find a radio station that isn't playing Christmas carols. Ah, that "wonderful time of the year". It's when, even if you live in the "crime capital of Canada", that you realize to the depths of your frozen feet why a Canadian pickpocket is a contradiction in terms. Hard to keep up the manual dexterity when you only have two fingers left, and it's impossible to pick a pocket with heavy gloves on.

POLLOCK'S HARDWARE CO-OP LTD:

Warm greetings on this frigid night! Can you believe it's less than two weeks to Christmas?

We here at Pollock's want to let you know about a few things that are going on:

1. AGM Update: We held our first annual general meeting on Monday November 30th at Luxton Community Centre. Nearly 60 members came out and elected our new board, comprised of: John Loxley (Chair), Neil Duboff, Lisa Forbes, Dennis McNab, Tom Simms, Suzanne Simpson, Talia Syrie, Louise Thiessen, and Paul Worster. Welcome returning and new board members alike!

2. Holiday Schedule: Our regular hours are 8:00 to 8:00 Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 6:00 Saturdays, and noon to 5:00 Sundays. We will close at 6:00 on both Dec 24 and Dec 31 and will be closed on December 25, 26 and 27, as well as on January 1.

3. Paderno Sale - Currently on. New stock added on December 28th and going to January 2. There are some amazing deals and stock is flying off the shelves! Luckily we ordered lots so there's still a good selection. Makes a great Christmas gift for the chef in your life.

4. Other gift ideas: Lots of retro toys including Radio Flyer wagons and trikes, made-in-Manitoba wooden crokinole boards, Canadian-made wooden sleighs and toboggans, Mr. Potato Head, and green toys too. And then there's bird feeders, the ever-popular Hunky Bill's Perogy Makers, cast iron crepe (and other) pans. And hard-to-find retro items like crocks, register covers, washboards, even sock-stretchers! You name it, we've got it!

5. Is your house drafty? We have a great supply of weatherstripping, furnace filters, space heaters.

6. Other services: we reglaze windows, sharpening service (saws, scissors, tools).

7. Members Weekend: coming up January 30-31. Stay tuned for details. We hope to see you soon but in case we don't, we wish you all Happy Holidays. May we all take time to reflect on the good things in our lives and to remember those that are less fortunate.

No bailouts required for Pollock's:

In June 2008, Pollock's Hardware was reborn due in a large part to the historic cooperative values that were embraced by our North End neighbourhood. Little did we know at the time that we would be starting up this unique community enterprise amidst one of the worst economic recessions of our times. On the first year anniversary of the re-opening of the store, which had closed after 85 years when the owners retired and a new owner could not be found, we are pleased to report that while global capitalism is unravelling, Pollock's Hardware Co-op is making record sales. No bailouts required here. Our community-owned hardware store on north Main Street is thriving.

The revival of Pollock's Hardware, which was established in 1922, is based on the same historic co-operative principles used by prairie farmers to deal with the devastation of the prevailing survival-of-the-fittest private market ideology that impacted their livelihoods by forming wheat pools and marketing boards. As well, communities have organized themselves along co-operative lines to establish credit unions to fill the void left by banking institutions.

It's tomorrow, June 14, from 8:00am to 6:00pm, Pollock's Hardware's "perennial swap and yard sale" at Winnipeg's hardware co-op Pollock's

Hardware, 1407 Main St, Winnipeg's socialist response to counter-culture illusions and the big box stores (not necessarily in that order). A cooperative place for ordinary people in Winnipeg's North End. Summer hours are now 8:00am to 8:00pm Monday to Saturday and Noon to 5:00pm on Sunday. For those things that just aren't at the big box stores such as tool rental, neighbourhood garage rental and window and screen repairing see Pollock's website. Much more there as well. this place has the recommendation of both Molly and the wife(it's where she finds the pots that she loves). Come on out.

To all our Members and Friends of Pollock's Hardware Co-op, a belated Happy New Year and hope you are all keeping warm. Just a short newsletter today to let you know what we're up to at your favorite hardware store:

1. First Annual Members' Day - Saturday January 31 all day. This is an appreciation day for all of our supporters. Bring your membership card for 10% savings on everything in the store. Refreshments will be served and keep an eye out for in-store specials.

2. Toboggans & Sleighs - we'd sold out of these before Christmas and placed another order. We hope to have them in any day. We have a big mountain of snow in our parking lot that you can play in too, no extra charge!

3. Red Green Books - We'd sold out of these before Christmas too, but we have them in stock once again.

4. Lock Re-Keying Service - this is a new service, available just on weekends for now.

5. Toilets - We will be participating in the provincial rebate program to encourage water conservation. We'll be selling dual-flush toilets and offering an installation program through our partnership with BUILD. More details to follow.

6. Coming up: Perennial Swap & Flea Market in Pollock's parking lot, on Saturday May 23 (after the long weekend). See Jodi or Mike for details or to book a table. All proceeds will go to a local charity.

7. Sunday March 1 - we will be closed to count inventory.

Yup it's true. This Monday, November 10, comedian and home repair maven Red Green will be on hand at Winnipeg's Pollock's Hardware Co-op to sign copies of his new book 'We're All in this Together'. Come on out and see the man who gave "duct tape" a whole new meaning.

Sorry for the short notice but we just learned that TV personality Red Green will be visiting Pollock's Hardware Co-op (1407 Main St) on Monday morning (November 10th) from 10:30 till noon to sign his new book, We're All in this Together. Steve will be joined by Mag Ruffman, host of DIY television classics like A Repair to Remember.

Red Green creator Steve Smith is a national icon, an Order of Canada recipient, a creative thinker and one of the funniest men in the country. His new book "We're All In This Together" is a fast-clipped tour through the highs and lows of Steve's life. Steve's unique perspective will entertain and uplift every reader. The book includes more than 100 photographs from Steve's personal collection and would make a great Christmas gift for all the duct tape fans in your life. If you can't make it for the book signing, Red's book will be available for sale at the store.

Speaking of Christmas gifts, we've just brought in a wide selection of Paderno cookware and accessories, all on sale (some at half price). Paderno cookware is known for its high quality and is made in Prince Edward Island, Canada. And if you don't need cookware, we have lots of other great houseware goods.

WINNIPEG:

POLLOCK'S HARDWARE CO-OP GRAND RE-OPENING A GREAT SUCCESS:

Last Saturday Molly managed to drop by the new Pollock's Hardware Co-op official reopening. Although it has been open for a brief period before it was time for a party to celebrate the "official" opening of the new store. About 200 people gathered on the sidewalk in front of Pollock's for the street party before everyone was driven inside by a thunderstorm. Dozens and dozens of people continued to drop by through the day to look around and offer their best wishes.

Molly took a few pictures (see below), though the quality of some leaves much to be desired. Trust me, the ones I discarded were even worse. Just a little heads up here. The picture that shows the website of the store advertised as http://www.phco-op.ca/ is wrong. The actual website, if you want to learn more about the new co-op is http://www.pollockshardwareco-op.ca/ . You can find details there about membership and "investment shares", as well as the history of how the co-op came to be. The site is still under construction, and more info will be added with updates.

The co-op fills many functions: an alternative for those fed up with the big box stores, keeping business and revenue in the community, providing employment for local people, building community by providing a place to meet and greet one's neighbours, stopping the decay of Winnipeg's North End, returning revenue to the consumers/members of the co-op and saving them money,empowering ordinary people and giving them a sense that can actually do something rather than being passive spectators, keeping a convenient local institution up and running for those who don't want to or can't drive across town and much more. The co-op model, in both its consumer and producer facets provides a living alternative to both corporate "capitalism" and to the false socialism of state enterprise. May there be two, three, many such initiatives as Pollock's in the years to come.
