CANADIAN LABOUR
SUPPORT CUPE 855:
As of yesterday municipal workers at the City of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, have been on strike against the city management's repeated attacks on public services. The workers are represented by Local 855 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). At issue is the determination of city management to expand their contracting-out of services, the withdrawal of benefits from workers over 65 years (if they are still working), eliminating flexible working hours that have been in place for 16 years, denying overtime to winter maintenance workers and wage policies that leave these employees at a significantly lower level than others in nearby Peterborough. See HERE for the full story. CUPE is asking its supporters to join an email campaign directed at the Mayor of Kawawartha Lakes, Ric McGee, saying that he should settle with his employees in a fair manner. Go to THIS LINK to join this campaign.
