LABOUR SOLIDARITY:
ANOTHER FARM WORKER DEATH; ANOTHER LAW NOT ENFORCED:
Last May the United Farm Workers sent out an appeal demanding an investigation into the death of Eladio Hernandez, a 52 year old farm worker who died of a heart attack while working in sweltering heat in a San Joaquin Valley orchard. This appeal was reproduced here at Molly's Blog. Thousands of people emailed the California OSHA demanding an investigation, and they did indeed do so. The report of the OSHA found that farm labour contractor YNT Harvesting was operating in serious violation of several health and safety standards. The company was fined about $26,000 for these violations.
The UFW has called on its supporters to email California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger telling him that farm workers need his help to enforce the laws that are on the books regarding labour conditions in the fields of his State. as they say, "the laws on the books are not the laws in the fields".
