*TENANTS EVICTED “FOR OWNER’S FAMILY”

–HOUSE NOW ADVERTISED AS OLYMPIC $$$ RENTAL

* *On-Site News Conference*10am this Monday December 7th Meet at Northwest corner of East 11th Ave and St. Catherines St (2 blocks east of Fraser; then a short walk to the house) *Speakers*

Two Evicted Tenants – names provided on-site ,Joseph Jones (Olympic Resistance Network), Laura Track (Pivot Legal Society), Rider Cooey (Citywide Housing Coalition)

Evicted tenants of an eight-unit East Vancouver house say the owner told them and the BC Residential Tenancy Branch that the entire house will be needed for family members. But the tenants have discovered the house is being offered online as an Olympic rental

– the actual advertisement and rental rate will be available on-site. At the start of each tenancy, the owner required leases that end 31 January 2010, providing various excuses and assuring tenants they would be able to extend their leases. But at the end of November, tenants got two-month eviction notices saying the owner requires the house “for landlord or landlord’s immediate family,” in apparent compliance with the BC Residential Tenancy Act. The house is now being advertised online for February-March 2010 rental at tens of thousands of dollars

– the ad and exact figure available on-site. The owner has told tenants they will be welcome to return to their rooms in April 2010 !

*Catching the Spirit”: How I Am Being Evicted for the Olympics*

" Recently I have been able to confirm that I am being evicted because my landlord wants to empty the place I live in to cash in on the Olympics. According to an advertisement found online, she intends to rent the entire East Vancouver / Mount-Pleasant area character house (where I pay $580/month to rent 1 of 8 bedrooms) to make tens of thousands of dollars during February-March. Lacking this concrete proof, my eviction would have been technically legal, despite the promises of VANOC and the city of Vancouver to protect people like me from losing our homes to Olympics profiteering.

When I originally rented the room, as a student with limited renting experience, I knew very little about tenant rights, and had never had a problem with a landlord in the past. I thought it was kind of weird that she wanted a 7 month lease, but I signed it anyway because she said she wanted stability and low turnover among the people renting the house, and she wanted to make sure that tenants would stay for relatively long periods of time. Back then, 7 months was the minimum commitment that she would accept. When I questioned the fact that my lease ended so close to the Olympics (January 31, 2010), she said it was just a minimum commitment, and that she also wanted to make sure that tenants stayed through the holiday season because many tenants had left at that time in the past. I stated that I would want to stay longer, and asked if she would extend the lease provided there were no problems. She said yes, and that there was no reason not to. I accepted that response and signed the lease, beginning my tenancy on July 1, 2009.

In September, when one of my housemates moved out and we had to fill the room, we realized she was advertising it as available for only a 5 month lease. I then conferred with my other housemates, and we all realized that our leases ended on January 31, just ahead of the Olympics. At that point webecame suspicious about the timing, and we emailed our landlord to query the timing and raise our concern that she might not extend the leases as originally promised (to all of us). She responded to say that in fact she was not going to extend our leases and that she was going to (in her words) “honour the terms of the original lease” and make us leave on January 31. This, she said, was not because of the Olympics, but because she was pregnant and her family was going to be coming from Bulgaria for that month to assist her with the pregnancy and they needed the house for everyone to live in. She justified this by saying that we were welcome to leave at any time, and that she felt we had enough notice to find another place to live. However, none of us wanted to leave, nor did we have the time, energy ormoney to arrange alternative arrangements in the middle of a rainy Vancouver fall. Beyond that, she extended an offer to let us move back in April 2010 if we wanted to.

We investigated and discovered the laws protecting people from being evicted for the Olympics only work if one can prove the landlord’s intent. The likelihood of that seemed pretty remote. At the end of November we received our two-month notice of eviction, with the box “for use of landlord and/or landlord’s immediate family” checked as the reason we had to leave. Two days later, still believing that there was nothing we could do, my housemate was searching the internet and found the advertisement our landlord had posted to rent the house for the Olympics.

OLYMPIC RESISTANCE NETWORK RESPONDS TO POLICE ALLEGATIONS OF UNDERCOVER COP DRIVING PROTEST BUS TO VICTORIA

December 3, Vancouver Coast Salish Territories

- According to reports by 24 hours news, on Monday Victoria Police chief Jamie Graham alleged that an undercover police officer was driving a bus organized by the Olympic Resistance Network to transport protesters to Victoria for an anti-Olympic Torch Relay protest on October 30.

Graham stated "You knew that the protesters weren't that organized when on the ferry on the way over they all rented a bus, they all came over on a bus, and there was a cop driving the bus." In response, the Olympic Resistance Network is making the following statement:

"This latest revelation of police infiltration and surveillance reinforces the notion of an Olympic police state that anti-Olympic activists have long been warning about. Infiltration tactics, with ongoing harassment of activists and a $1 billion police, security and military budget including high-tech equipment like the LRAD sonic gun and close circuit TV cameras, have created a chilly climate for the right to protest and the protection of basic civil liberties.

Our organization and our activities are public. With allies in Victoria we organized a successful and disruptive protest with over 400 people. While the police will increase their surveillance activities and their attempts to divide us, we are seeing increasing resistance across the country with additional protests planned against the Torch relay in Quebec and Ontario. We encourage more residents who are enraged and affected by the impact of the Games to get involved and to express their right to dissent against this five ring circus of oppression."

No2010 Victoria challenges police chief to a debate about spies andcivil liberties

A Victoria group opposed to the 2010 Olympics is challenging police chief Jamie Graham to a public debate about secret police tactics and civil liberties. Graham's recent statements that police infiltrated agroup traveling by bus to Victoria raise new concerns about the legality of police conduct.

"These officers can play spy games and make jokes about it, but we are serious about civil liberties and social justice," said No 2010 Victoria spokesperson Zoe Blunt. "The police have pledged to protect and serve a corporate-sponsored sporting event, and they are spending millions to harass social justice advocates and indigenous rights activists and anti-poverty groups. That is not acceptable."

"Now that he's raised the subject of possible illegal police operations, we are challenging him to explain his statements anddefend the tactics he's bragging about, if he can," Blunt said.

On Monday, November 31, Graham told a group of security conference attendees that police had infiltrated a group attending an anti-Olympics rally and march on October 30th, 2009. "You knew that the protesters weren't that organized when on the ferry on the way over they all rented a bus, they all came over on a bus, and there was a cop driving the bus!” Graham told the 12th Vancouver International Security Conference on Monday.

For months, members of No2010 Victoria and the Vancouver Olympic Resistance Network have been warning the public about police violation of civil liberties. Harassment by security police, bylaws banning signs and purchases of military-grade crowd-control equipment have mainly served to alienate the public and shine a light on police abuses. Olympic critics across Canada have spoken out against the Games not only as a colossal waste of public resources, but also for the social costs they will bring to the region.

“We've been open and out-spoken in rallying support for indigenous rights, an end to homelessness, and environmental justice on growing social issues that can be directly attributed to the Olympics,” said Blunt. “Now we’re facing an overzealous security engaging in undercover operations.” Most recently, American news host and producer of “Democracy Now” Amy Goodman was detained at the Canadian border on November 25th and questioned if she was going to criticize the Olympics at a speech that day in Vancouver. The incident has focused world attention on potential 2010 police abuses. "The public can decide for themselves if such actions are a good useof resources or if the authorities are out of line," Blunt said. “We want an open debate on the issue.”

* No Olympics on Stolen Native Land Speaking Tour *

British Columbia and US West Coast

- Two tours during January 2010

Greetings,

As you may be aware, in February 2010, Vancouver BC will be the host city for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Due to the negative impacts of the Olympics, including homelessness, ecological destruction, huge public debt, and a greatly expanded police state, a movement has arisen to challenge the Olympic industry and expose to the world its true nature. The Olympics Resistance Network is comprised of numerous grassroots groups and individuals and exists as a space to coordinate anti-2010 Olympics efforts in Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories. In doing so, we act in solidarity with other communities across ‘BC’ – particularly Indigenous communities who have been defending their land against the onslaught of the Olympics since the bid itself.

*** ABOUT OUR TWO SPEAKING TOURS ***

Beginning in January 2010, we will travel down through so-called BC -unceded Indigenous lands - as well as the west coast of the US to conduct two separate speaking tours on resistance to the 2010 Olympics,to share our experiences, and to promote the Feb 10-15 anti-colonial & anti-capitalist convergence. The purpose of this letter is to find people/groups in these areas to assist in local organizing of speaking events for our tour. The events will feature 1-2 speakers from our movement, a short video, with time for questions and discussion. We would also bring materials such as leaflets and Tshirts to distribute and fundraise with. A template poster will be provided if you would like to use it. Specifically, you will be asked to secure a venue for the event and to promote it in your area. Speakers will also be available to do presentations at schools, universities, radioshows, etc., and to answer any inquiries from local media (corporate oralternative). No event is too small or meaningless for us!

1) BC TOUR INFO

In BC, we aim to arrive in towns and communities just prior to the arrival of the Torch in these communities to help build local resistance to the Torch relay. The torch re-enters BC in Golden on Jan 21 and continues through the province until it arrives in Vancouver on Feb 12. For more information on the torch route, check out the interactive map found on http://www.vancouver2010.com/ .

We hope to begin the first BC tour on or around January 12th, and proceed east from Vancouver to Merritt, Kelowna, Penticton, Castlegar, arriving in Nelson on January 16th. Sunday January 17th we plan to travel through Cranbrook, Invermere, arriving in Golden Tuesday January 19th. Wednesday January 20th to Sunday January 24th: Revelstoke, Salmon, Vernon, Kamloops, and Merritt (if not done on the first leg). A second BC Tour is proposed to begin Monday January 25th go to January 31st, and will include Williams Lake, Prince George, Smithers, Terrace, and Prince Rupert. A third BC Tour would aim to start February 1st in Powell River and then travel to Sechelt, Squamish, Whistler, Lillooet, and Chillawack with the last speaking engagement February 5th.

*** Please note this schedule is flexible and has a tentative start, itwill be finalized based on those who respond.

2) US WESTCOAST TOUR INFO

In the US, we hope to begin the tour in Bellingham, Wa., on or around January 8, and proceed south from there (along the I-5), to include Seattle (Jan 9), Tacoma (Jan 10), Olympia (Jan 11), Portland (Jan 12- 13), Eugene (Jan 15), San Francisco Bay Area (Jan 16-17), Los Angeles (Jan 19) & Santa Cruz (Jan 20). UPDATED CALL FOR CROSS-CANADA MOBILIZING:

EXTINGUISH THE OLYMPIC TORCH!

From October 31 2009 - February 12 2010, the Olympic Torch Relay "A Path of Northern Lights" will be traveling across Canada. The Olympic Resistance Network, based in Vancouver Unceded Coast Salish Territories, is calling on and encouraging our allies to coordinate efforts in over 2000 communities to oppose and resist the Torch Relay. On October 31, over 400 people gathered to oppose the Torch Relay launch in Victoria. An Anti-Olympics Festival and Zombie March, organized by No2010 Victoria, succeeded in disrupting the relay. Security personnel were forced to extinguish the torch, load it in a van, and reroute it in order to reach the Legislature. (Visit http://no2010victoria.net/ orhttp://olympicresistance.net/ for videos)

WHY ORGANIZE AGAINST THE TORCH?

The Olympic torch is a propaganda tool that promotes gentrification, repression and environmental destruction. The origins of the Torch Relay lie in the dark history of the 1936 Games in Berlin, where it was devised as a means to spread Nazi fascism and to promote the Third Reich. (SeeGlobe and Mail article here: http://no2010.com/node/1113) The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is a $25 million publicity stunt to promote the Olympic Brand, particularly its top sponsors. The Royal Bank of Canada and Coca Cola are the main sponsors of the 2010 Torch relay. RBC is the top financier of the environmentally devastating Alberta Tar Sands, while Coca Cola has been responsible for health degradation as part of the junkfood industry, massive depletion of groundwater and toxic waste pollution in India, and involved in hiring paramilitary groups to violently repress union organizers in Colombia. It is becoming increasingly evident that far from being simply about sport, the 2010 Olympics is rooted in displacement, corporate greed, militarization, and repression.

While Olympic corporate sponsors are getting bailed out, Indigenous lands are being stolen, more people are becoming homeless, thousands are losing their jobs and access to public services, the environment is being destroyed, and civil liberties are being eroded as over a billion dollars are being sunk into security and surveillance measures. While people suffer consequences, the public money invested by the city of Vancouver, the city of Whistler, the B.C. government and the Canadian government is now nearing $7 billion.

WHAT CAN I DO?

This Torch Relay will be the longest in-country relay in Olympic history, giving us the chance to make some anti-Olympic history! You might be opposing the Torch due to the rally call No Olympics on Stolen Native Land! Remember the Torch does not represent a sacred fire, it is a destructive force. Or you might be protesting the Torch because of the impacts of its corporate sponsors on your community, such as the link between the RBC and Alberta Tar Sands. Or you are generally concerned about the overall negative impacts of the Games such as homelessness, misdirected public spending, attacks on civil liberties, and the general oppression and repression it represents. There are many reasons and many ways to oppose the Torch, so whatever your reason might be, get out there and be visible! Create a leaflet and make some placards, and you and your group can protest along the Torch route and hand out information to those along the sidelines. You can lead a march to disrupt and detour the relay, as Victoria organizers successfully did without arrests. Set up a blockade through your community and stop the torch from going through and spreading its false propaganda. Hold educational events prior to and after the Torch going through to spread awareness about the impacts of the Olympics (you can contact olympicresistance@riseup.net for educational materials to assist in this). Do whatever makes the most sense for your context; most important is that you organize something!

==> If you are organizing an event or action in your city, town, or community please email us the details at olympicresistance@riseup.net so we can compile the information and build strength and unity in our efforts by having this information available on our website.

RESIST THE 2010 OLYMPIC GAMES!

Communique by Olympics Resistance Network

November 2009

- The 2010 Winter Olympics, taking place on unceded Indigenous land, are only three short months away. This city is becoming a militarized zone, attacks on the poor are continuing with the proposed Assistance to Shelter Act, draconian bylaws are suppressing basic freedom of speech, and public funds continue to bailout Olympic projects and corporate sponsors while workers are being forced with back-to-work legislation. If you hate the Olympics for all those reasons and more, we encourage you to get involved!

===> GET INVOLVED <===

1) Sign-up for our low-traffic list (1-2 emails per week) to stay updated on upcoming events, meetings, and actions. Please emailolympicresistance@riseup.net and ask to be added to our announcement list.

2) Check out http://www.no2010.com/ for your daily dose of Olympic related news.

3) Host an anti-Olympic educational on your campus or at your next conference. Or invite a speaker to your next meeting to discuss what your group can do. We are able to provide educational materials including films, speakers, as well as resistance art, tshirts, comics, buttons, stickers and more!

4) Get involved in the Olympic Resistance Network or other anti-Olympic groups in your neighbourhood or campus. The ORN has regular General Meetings on alternating Sundays as well as many committees and projects you can get involved in such as Outreach, Alternative Media, Legal Support, Youth Resistance, and more.

5) If you are located outside the Lower Mainland and are interested in or already are organizing against the Olympics, we strongly encourage you to get in touch (olympicresistance@riseup.net ) with your location and basic public contact information (email/phone). We get lots of requests from people looking to connect with other Olympic dissidents in their town/community especially to take action against the Torch.

6) All out for for the Feb 10-15 Anti-Olympic Convergence! Building on the call by Indigenous defenders at the Indigenous Peoples Gathering in Senora, Mexico in October 2007, we will be working to coordinate the logistics to host an anti-Olympic convergence. The basic plan thus far is a Conference and People's Summit on Feb 10-11, a large family-friendly public mobilization on Feb 12, and autonomous days of action on Feb 13 and Feb 15. On Feb 14th, we will be standing with the 19th Annual Women's Memorial March to honour all the missing and murdered and women in the DTES (this is not an anti-Olympic protest).

===> CONTACT INFORMATION <===

==> ABOUT US <===

Far from being simply about ‘sport’, the history of the Olympics is one rooted in displacement, corporate greed, fascism, repression, and violence. Only the political and corporate elite – from real estate developers to Olympic sponsors - have anything to gain from the Olympics industry. The negative effects of the upcoming Winter Games are clear: expansion of sport tourism and resource extraction on unceded Indigenous lands; homelessness and gentrification of poor neighborhoods; increasing privatization of public services; union busting through imposed contracts and exploitative conditions for migrant labour; a ballooning $1 billion security apparatus with an attack on basic civil liberties; misdirected $7 billion public spending and public debt; and unprecedented destruction of the environment.

In light of this, the Olympic Resistance Network exists as a space to coordinate anti-2010 Olympics efforts. In doing so, we act in solidarity with other communities across 'BC' - particularly indigenous communities who have been defending their land against the onslaught of the Olympics since the bid itself. Our organizing is largely being done under the slogan of "No Olympics on Stolen Native Land", while creating an opportunity for all anti-capitalist, Indigenous, anti-poverty, labour, migrant justice, housing rights, environmental justice, anti-war, civil libertarians, and anti colonial activists to come together to confront this two-week circus and the oppression it represents. We look forward to working together across our diverse experiences and movements, while sharing a common understanding including an anti-colonial and anti-capitalist analysis; respect for diversity of tactics and strategies; an anti-oppression understanding and solidarity with those most directly affected; and organizational philosophy based on decentralization and autonomy within a coordinated and accountable structure. We support the international resolution passed by over 1500 Indigenous delegates at the Intercontinental Indigenous Peoples Gathering in Sonora, Mexico to “boycott the 2010 Olympic Games” based on Resolution #2 of the Gathering which states “We reject the 2010 Winter Olympics on sacred and stolen territory of Turtle Island–Vancouver, Canada”. Based on this, we are working towards a global anti-capitalist and anti-colonial convergence from February 10th-15th 2010, while undertaking additional actions and educational efforts on an ongoing basis.

2010 Vancouver Olympics Integrated Security Unit Pays Me A Visit

Around 4 weeks ago, two copes named Cst. Kirk Rattray and Intellegence Investigator Jordan McLellan visited my home on the reserve. The “Integrated Security Unit” (ISU) is led by the RCMP and consists of members of the RCMP, Vancouver Police Department, West Vancouver Police Department and the Canadian Forces. They have been approaching activists and critics of the 2010 Winter Olympics for over a year in Vancouver and around Canada. They approach individuals they are monitoring for dissenting activity during the games to “assess any threats”. I will state that in March 2009, I became aware that I had already been “Blacklisted” from the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies.I also around the same time noticed RCMP were visiting my website by checking the ISP (Internet Service Protocals) from my blog stats. Basically, I knew they were monitoring me.

Over the past few years, I attended various rallies, protest, and events in resistance to the 2010 Olympics. My lack of participation in these events has nothing to do with a change of political positions, but are-alignment with priorities. I also acknowledge that the 2010 Winter Olympics are coming (obviously!), and that no group will completely stop the 2010 Olympics from coming. The dissent and resistance the 2010 Olympics is also quite diverse in it’s causes and rationale, despite what the mainstream media will portray it as. Of course they would portray the dissenters as hooligans and crazies; they are Olympics sponsors in the end. My dissent mostly remained in my rhetoric both on and off this blog. For a short time when I was 13, prior to Vancouver winning the bid, I was in favor of the Olympics coming. At the same time, I was really hesitant to support it. I remember that I wanted to do a poll on how many youth wanted the 2010 Olympics to come. It never happened (how the hell is a 13 year old supposed to do that anyways?), but I am quite fond of the fact at that age I was still critical.

Four weeks ago these two Cops payed a visit to ask me questions about my invovment with resistance to the 2010 Olympics. They questioned me on my involvment with the Native Youth Movement, the Warriors Societies, and any other activist groups. In the beginning of the conversation, they gave me a braid of sweetgrass as some kind of cultural gesture… I would assume? (Wrong culture there guys!) I should of asked them, “What do I do with this?” The one question they persistently hounded was, “If you knew of any persons who would get hurt because of activist activity, would you help us and inform us to prevent anyone from getting hurt?” I never answered the question, although later I realized I should of responded with my own backhanded comment of “What if I see persons getting hurt because of cop activity, do I help and inform you to prevent these people from getting hurt?”

They also asked questions around my intentions, how I feel about the Four Host First Nations, and the 2010 Olympics in general. I made a comment that, “The Band Counils who participate in the Four Host First Nations are only colonial-puppet government that owe it’s responsibility and loyalties to the Indian Act, and not our own people. I see those governments as illegitimate and imposed. They are colonization”.

They responded with trying to explain to me how “The Indian Act is a good thing” because it “gives natives in Canada their Indian Status” and without the Indian Act “Natives wouldn’t be Indian.” Ignorant and racist logic. Nothing new for me. I will state that my intentions and activity during the 2010 Winter Olympics are not even known to me at this point. The Olympics should never have been supported by my community, and future generations will have to fix the damage it has caused. It’s supported and endorsed the corruption and farce of the Squamish Nation, and has only allowed a few to prosper and benefit from it. It will leave little legacy for future generations, except rising housing costs, more population and Urban sprawl, expansion and development of more of our territory, and the prostitution and exploitation of our culture and community. I wait for it to come and go because in the aftermath, the relationship between Indigenous peoples and Settler government will not have changed, the situation with Indigenous peoples in Canda will still be severe, and it will have made a few Indians into wealthy capitalists, furthering the consistent agenda of colonization and assimilation. Bring it on you dirty colonizers, I’m waiting for the Olympics to ge there already.

Community March to Stop the 'Olympic Kidnap the Homeless' Act

The 'Assistance' to Shelter Act Must Be Stopped!

A coalition of DTES community groups and allies including CCAP, Streams of Justice, IOCC, VanAct and DTES Power of Women Group are hosting a march against the “Olympic Kidnapping Act,” which allows police to detain and use force on homeless people to compel them into shelters.

*Rally to Stop the 'Olympic Kidnapping Act*

SUNDAY DECEMBER 13 @ 3:30 PM-5:00PM

POLICE STATION (312 MAIN STREET, AT CORDOVA)

Come one, come all!

* Earlier press release: DTES GROUPS DENOUNCE BC ASSISTANCE TO SHELTER ACT AS “OLYMPIC KIDNAPPING” ACT November 24 2009, Vancouver

- A coalition of DTES community groups are hosting a press conference to launch a campaign against what they are calling the “Olympic Kidnapping Act”. They are calling the Act, which allows police to detain and use force on homeless people to compel them into shelters, fundamentally undemocratic, unjust, and unconstitutional. In response to the government’s claim that this Act helps the homeless, homeless people such as Cee refuse to be forcefully apprehended. “I can look after myself; I’ve been doing it for years,” states Cee.

According to Stella August, member of Downtown Eastside Women Centre Power to Women group, “This Kidnapping Act creates a state of fear in the DTES.We are angered at the hypocrisy of a government that closes down emergency shelters, while allowing police to forcefully displace homeless people against their will. We have already witnessed waves of police crackdowns over the past year; we are not foolish enough to believe that this is another coincidence leading up to the Games.”

During the 1996 Olympics, approximately 9000 homeless people in Atlanta were arrested in the months leading up to the Games and shunted up to 300 kilometres out of the city. “We think that Mayor Gregor Robertson, as Chair of the Police Board, should make clear that he will refuse to enforce this unconstitutional Act. Is this part of his Eliminate Homelessness by 2015 strategy – just disappear the poor?” states Wendy Pederson of Carnegie Community Action Project.

Shelter providers such as Atira Women’s Resource Society, First United Church, Lookout Emergency Aid Society, PHS Community Service Society, as well as the Canadian Mental Health Association have all also publically expressed their significant and grave concerns with the Act. According to Laura Track, housing campaign lawyer with Pivot Legal Society who is planning a legal challenge to this Act, “The Minister knows this is an unconstitutional law; this is a cynical strategy by the Liberal government to force poor people off the streets for the Olympics before courts strike the legislation down, which will unfortunately take months if not years.”

*“No Olympics on Stolen Native Land”*

***A public mobilization against the Olympic Torch Relay ***

AW@L and friends from across the region are sending an open invitation for a participatory public event to coincide with the arrival of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay in Kitchener on Sunday, December 27.

* WHAT:

A family friendly rally, march and demonstration against the 2010 Vancouver-Whistler Olympics. We intend to create a festive atmosphere that is safe and inviting for activists as well as families. Our goal is to educate and to deliver a message. We will start with interactive events, free hot coffee and food at a rally at the entrance to Victoria Park in downtown Kitchener featuring speakers from the Olympic ResistanceNetwork-Ontario (ORNO) as well as prominent Six Nations youth activists. Then we will all march to City Hall for a public demonstration during the Olympic Torch Celebration.

WHEN:

Sunday December 27, 4-8pm.

WHERE:

Rally at the Victoria Park Clock Tower, downtown Kitchener, off Gaukel Street.

WHY:

In response to callouts from the Olympic Resistance Network (ORN) and the Native Youth Movement (NYM), AW@L—a community-based direct action group, along with some of our allies are teaming up to co-host a peaceful rally during the Olympic Torch Celebration. We invite all of our friends and allies from across the region to converge in Kitchener in order to send the message to VANOC and to Canada that they can neither whitewash the ongoing colonization of First Nations, nor can they greenwash this country’s abysmal environmental record.

We will use their Olympic circus as an opportunity to shine the international spotlight where it belongs, on the truth. We are calling for this gathering because VANOC, Canada and the Olympics’ sponsors are trying to use the Olympics and the world media spotlight they bring to cast Canada’s international image in a certain light; as a“post-apology” country where the State’s relationship with First Nations is positive and progressive. But this official presentation is a tragic farce. The truth is that this country’s relationship with Indigenous Peoples is shameful. Canada is one of only three countries that has not signed the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission collapsed. Our land claims process is so backed up that at the current rate active claims will not be solved for more than another two centuries. Canada and the provinces have repeatedly and endemically violated treaty after treaty.

The Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Winter Olympic Games are taking place on unceded Territories of the Coast Salish people. Kitchener is on the Haldimand Tract, which is part of the Grand River Territory, which is Six Nations Land. Kitchener-Waterloo, like Vancouver-Whistler, is stolen land. VANOC, Canada and Olympics’ sponsors are trying to use the Olympics to cast themselves as “green” global citizens, when in fact that is a sham. Canada as well as the Royal Bank of Canada (one of the Olympics’ and the Torch Relay’s primary sponsors) have been identified by major Environmental NGO’s as among the world’s worst climate change offenders. Canada has made the least progress of all developed countries on our Kyoto Protocol commitments, and Canada has been one of the most disruptive and uncooperative countries when it comes to international climate change talks. Canada’s Tar Sands collectively comprise one of the most environmentally destructive projectson earth, and RBC is the leading financier of Tar Sands projects, which like many environmentally destructive projects has a disproportionate impact on Indigenous communities. In the Vancouver-Whistler corridor, the environmental impact of the 2010 Games is incalculable.

VANOC, the City of Vancouver, Torch Relay host cities and Olympic sponsors are trying to use the Olympics to make themselves appear socially responsible to their constituent communities. This is yet another lie. In Vancouver, in preparation for the 2010 Games, neighbourhoods have been brutally gentrified, drastically increasing homelessness and the marginalization of the urban poor. And to make matters worse, new bylaws have been passed in Vancouver that essentially criminalize homelessness and poverty.

In Torch Relay host cities, as on the West Coast, public funds are being diverted to pay for a corporate party; while in Kitchener the City’s New Years eve budget is being redirected to pay for VANOC’s Torch Celebration at City Hall, in Vancouver over six billion dollars of taxpayer money is being used to pay for the 2010 Corporate Circus. The 2010 Olympics are ushering in a new era of militarization and police repression. Activists across the country have been routinely harassed by CSIS and the RCMP in the lead up to the Olympic Games. During the games, new high-tech weaponry has been purchased for use against protesters and American military personnel are being brought in to help police the crowds. The security budget for the games is going to total over 1 billion dollars —during a financial crisis, no less.

So, as long as you are willing to abide by reasonable standards of “familyfriendly” behaviour, we urge everyone to attend this educational and festive public rally, march and demonstration against the 2010 Olympics. Bring warm clothes and things like banners, placards, costumes, noise makers, and oh yeah... lots of energy.

This event is less than a month a way, so there is much to do. If you would like to help out in any way, please contact No2010@peaceculture.org . That’s the same email to query if you want more info. We will have point people in Six Nations, Hamilton, Brantford, Guelph, Stratford, Toronto and London to coordinate carpooling, so if you need a ride, or have room for people in one, please let us know.

See you in the streets!

Olympic Resitance is part of that struggle.

BACKGROUND:

Just months away from the beginning of the Olympics spectacle in Vancouver/Whistler in February 2010, and just days away from the arrival of the Coca-Cola/RBC Olympic Torch Relay in Montreal on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, local indigenous solidarity and social justice organizers are lending their support to the calls by the Olympics Resistance Network for protests and disruptions of the Olympic Torch Relay. We highlight our support for Indigenous-led resistance in “British Columbia” to the Olympics. Our Indigenous allies have built an awareness and resistance campaign against the upcoming Vancouver/Whistler Olympics, and we stand in solidarity with their call for “No Olympics on Stolen Native Land.” We also highlight the other negative effects of the Olympics industry, as summarized by the Olympics Resistance Network in Vancouver:

“Far from being simply about ‘sport’, the history of the Olympics is one rooted in displacement, corporate greed, fascism, repression, and violence. Only the political and corporate elite – from real estate developers to Olympic sponsors - have anything to gain from the Olympics industry. The negative effects of the upcoming Winter Games are clear: expansion of sport tourism and resource extraction on unceded Indigenous lands; homelessness and gentrification of poor neighborhoods; increasing privatization of public services; union busting through imposed contracts and exploitative conditions for migrant labour; a ballooning $1 billion security apparatus with an attack on basic civil liberties; misdirected $7 billion public spending and public debt; and unprecedented destruction of the environment.”

-----
WHY ORGANIZE AGAINST THE TORCH?

[From the Olympics Resistance Network]

The Olympic torch is a propaganda tool that promotes gentrification, repression and environmental destruction. The origins of the Torch Relaylie in the dark history of the 1936 Games in Berlin, where it was devised as a means to spread Nazi fascism and to promote the Third Reich. (See Globe and Mail article here: http://no2010.com/node/1113 ) The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is a $25 million publicity stunt to promote the Olympic Brand, particularly its top sponsors.

-----

Ironically, the Olympic torches themselves are manufactured by Quebec company Bombardier, whose aerospace section is heavily implicated in the Canada-Quebec military-industrial complex. We encourage you to join us in large numbers in Montreal at our “No Olympics on Stolen Native Land” Protest against the RBC/Coca-Cola Olympic Torch Relay on December 10, and to get informed at the events organized earlier. The various events against the Olympic Torch Relay in Montreal are organized by members of the Indigenous Solidarity Committee of thePeople’s Global Action Bloc, Reclaim!, Ste-Emilie Skillshare, No One Is Illegal-Montreal, Q-Team and others.

CANADIAN LABOUR-MANITOBA:
TEMBEC WORKERS TURN THUMBS DOWN ON ARBITRATION:
The lockout on the part of the Tembec pulp and paper plant in Pine Falls Manitoba has been ongoing since August 31. 270 members of the USW and the COPE unions are affected. As the following story from the Winnipeg Free Press says they have turned down the arbitration offer from the provincial government, afraid that the company will likely demand even more concessions than its already ridiculous demands. Get all the chips on the table so to speak. To be sure the NDP government is not exactly lining up in solid ranks behind the workers. As a PR exercise the provincial labour minister sent off a letter to the feds asking that the Pine Falls workers be able to collect EI while on layoff. A non-starter to say the least. Considering the recipient of the letter that is something like writing Satan asking him to finance a new cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary. As one of the laid off workers in the following story says there is a lot more that the government could be doing. Be that as it may the spectacle of the provincial Conservative opposition trying to make political hay out of the lockout is much more repulsive. If in power the Conservatives wouldn't have even given the cuddly shoulder to cry on that the NDP has restricted itself to doing. Not all members of the Legislature, however, are as cynical as the government and the opposition. According to the Dec. 3rd edition of the Selkirk Journal NDP MLA Greg Dewar, along with local City of Selkirk City Councillor Duane Nicol have been working to solicit donations to the USW/COPE Family Fund to help the workers over the holiday season. The MLA's office will continue to accept donations until the 7th of the month. This man's actions are much more commendable than those of the party that he belongs to. See the end of this post for how you can help these workers and their families. first, here's the story.

LOCKED-OUT WORKERS TURN DOWN ARBITRATION:
Locked-out Tembec workers in Pine Falls have given a big thumbs-down to the province and its offer of binding arbitration to settle the three-month-old labour impasse.

Many of the workers were at the Manitoba legislative building Wednesday to press Premier Greg Selinger and his government to hold the newsprint company more accountable for the lock-out and its economic impact on the town north of Winnipeg. The 270 unionized workers were locked out by the company Aug. 31 after they overwhelmingly rejected a proposal that union officials said called for wage and benefits concessions totalling about 35 per cent.

Observers say at this pace the dispute may never get resolved: either the union will give up or Tembec will close the plant.

Workers said yesterday giving up is not an option, but added it won't be at the hands of an arbitrator under the province's Labour Relations Act. Under the act, either side in a strike or lockout can apply after 60 days for binding arbitration to settle the dispute.

Bill Lavallee, spokesman for the workers, said they don't want to go that route because the company has already signalled that it also wants to reopen the employee pension agreement, which is set to expire in 2013.

Lavallee said it's possible an arbitrator could agree to do that, and that's too big a risk as 65 of the employees are set to retire in five years and 170 of them in 10 years.

He said the province should hold Tembec's feet to the fire by clamping down on the company's forest management licence and removal of timber from the province.

"I'm locked out," Lavallee said. "Why aren't they locked out?"

Workers met with Selinger and Labour Minister Jennifer Howard after being invited to the legislature by Lac du Bonnet Tory Progressive Conservative MLA Gerald Hawranik. (Question: How do you spell "hypocrite" ? Answer: "C..o..n..s..e..r..v..a..t..i..v..e" -Molly )

Howard said during question period she has written to the company in an effort to bring both sides to the table.

"I'm looking forward to a favourable response," she said.

Tory Opposition Leader Hugh McFadyen said the length of the lockout is a blemish on the NDP.

He said in the house that if Gary Doer were still premier, he would have personally settled the dispute long ago. Doer quit about three months ago to become Canada's ambassador to the United States.

Selinger said his government will strengthen provincial pension legislation so that all workers' pensions are better protected, and that the threat to Tembec pensions can't be repeated.

The province appointed a mediator to intervene in labour dispute when it was only 18 days old, but that failed to bring any hint of a resolution.

Tembec, Powerview-Pine Falls' largest employer, has said it needs to achieve immediate reductions in labour costs to improve the competitive position of the plant, reeling from a decline in the North American demand for newsprint.

Tembec, which posted a loss of $38 million in the second quarter, has wood product, pulp, paperboard and newsprint plants across the country.

North American demand for newsprint has dropped almost 50 per cent since 2003 and the reduction in demand from 2008 to 2009 alone is equivalent to the capacity of seven or eight plants the size of Pine Falls (which can produce 180,000 tonnes of newsprint per year).

As the Olympic flame continues to sputter its way across Canada it is net with protests in every region. When it comes to Kitchener on Dec. 27 it will be no exception. The following is originally from the Anti War at Laurier group. It came to Molly's attention via the Common Cause/Linchpin site.

☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
A public mobilization against the Olympic Torch Relay:
Kitchener-Waterloo Rally, Dec 27th 2009.
Please forward widely!
“No Olympics on Stolen Native Land”
A public mobilization against the Olympic Torch Relay
AW@L and friends from across the region are sending an open invitation for a participatory public event to coincide with the arrival of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay in Kitchener on Sunday, December 27.
WHAT:
A family friendly rally, march and demonstration against the 2010 Vancouver-Whistler Olympics. We intend to create a festive atmosphere that is safe and inviting for activists as well as families. Our goal is to educate and to deliver a message. We will start with interactive events, free hot coffee and food at a rally at the entrance to Victoria Park in downtown Kitchener featuring speakers from the Olympic Resistance Network-Ontario (ORNO) as well as prominent Six Nations youth activists.

We are calling for this gathering because VANOC, Canada and the Olympics’ sponsors are trying to use the Olympics and the world media spotlight they bring to cast Canada’s international image in a certain light; as a “post-apology” country where the State’s relationship with First Nations is positive and progressive.

Canada’s Tar Sands collectively comprise one of the most environmentally destructive projects on earth, and RBC is the leading financier of Tar Sands projects, which like many environmentally destructive projects has a disproportionate impact on Indigenous communities.

In Torch Relay host cities, as on the West Coast, public funds are being diverted to pay for a corporate party; while in Kitchener the City’s New Years eve budget is being redirected to pay for VANOC’s Torch Celebration at City Hall, in Vancouver over six billion dollars of tax payer money is being used to pay for the 2010 Corporate Circus.

The security budget for the games is going to total over 1 billion dollars — during a financial crisis, no less.

So, as long as you are willing to abide by reasonable standards of “family friendly” behaviour, we urge everyone to attend this educational and festive public rally, march and demonstration against the 2010 Olympics. Bring warm clothes and things like banners, placards, costumes, noise makers, and oh yeah... lots of energy.

This event is less than a month a way, so there is much to do. If you would like to help out in any way, please contact No2010@peaceculture.org. That’s the same email to query if you want more info. We will have point people in Six Nations, Hamilton, Brantford, Guelph, Stratford, Toronto and London to coordinate carpooling, so if you need a ride, or have room for people in one, please let us know.
See you in the streets!

CANADIAN LABOUR-ONTARIO:
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHEER:
Molly has previously reported on efforts here in Manitoba to gather donations for the families of workers locked out by Tembec in Pine Falls. The situation is sadly the same across the country as the bosses become more aggressive, hoping to use the economic crisis as a lever against their employees. Down in Ontario some people are doing something about it, trying to make the holiday season a little easier for those on strike and those who have been locked out. Operation Christmas Cheer, sponsored by a large number of labour groups in that province is now in its 6th year of operation. They aim to bring picket line hampers, grocery gift cards and toys for the children to the families of as many workers in struggle as possible. Go to their website to see how you might be able to help out. Here are some of the labour disputes where they hope to help:
*CEP Union Local 37x, locked out by Grant Forest Products since September 2006.
*CEP Union Local 2003, locked out by Cadillac Fairview since June 2009 and terminated one month later.
*USW Local 271G, on strike against Guardian Fiberglass Inc. since June 2007.
*USW Local 1-500, on strike since August 2009 against ECP.
*USW 8918, on strike in Cambridge since May 2009.
*USW Local 6200, on strike against Vale Inco since July 2009.
*USW Local 6500, on strike against Vale Inco since July 2009.
*USW Local 9511, on strike against Drivetest since August 2009.
*ATU Local 741, on strike against London Transit since Nov 14.

BLOGGING:
YET ANOTHER REASON WHY MOLLY SHOULD WIN:
As Molly has repeated ad nauseum before on this blog, Molly's Blog is in the running for the 'Best Political Blog' over at the Canadian Blog Awards. If you like what you see here and need yet another reason to vote for Molly consider the following. The CBA seem to be pretty much an anglophone affair. the 'Best French language Blog' category had so few entries that voting there was put off until round 2. For the large number of Conservative bloggers who have been nominated this may not be a bad thing. They do, after all, tend to have heart attacks and strokes when they turn their cereal boxes around in the morning. As far as I can determine Molly's Blog is the only entry where posts in French and translations from same appear (sporadically enough I must admit ). According to the 2009 Canada Year Book there are still 22% of the Canadian population who list their first language as French. While 22% of the posts on this blog are not in French, the small number that are posted here are indeed better than 0%. Thus...I conclude that Molly is the only real Canadian amongst the nominees, and you should therefore vote for her. Do it now while the spirit moves you. Consider that many of the Conservatives would be pleased as punch to betray their country and have it join the USA. patriotism is not mindless support for invading a foreign country on the other side of the Earth. It may, however, consist of preserving aspects of our nation that make us different from the only country that has ever invaded Canada in history. Think about it, and vote Molly. That's it for the night. See you in the morning.

CANADIAN LABOUR-SASKATCHEWAN:
AGAINST BILL 80:
Out Saskatchewan way (Molly's childhood stomping grounds) citizens and workers have been fighting hard against 'Bill 80', a measure proposed by the right wing Saskatchewan Party to supposedly liberalize union representation in the province. What the bill actually does is make it extremely difficult to organize real trade unions while opening the door to 'bosses' unions' such as the CLAC (think 'unions' under fascism or communism ). Here's a story from the Saskatoon Star Phoenix about just how determined the government is to push this bill through.
¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤
Bill 80 will pass, Norris tells crowd:
The Star Phoenix November 28, 2009
A controversial construction labour bill that critics say exposes the Saskatchewan Party's anti-union bias will be passed one way or another, says Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris.

Norris spoke to a North Saskatoon Business Association luncheon crowd (no doubt a very sympathetic crowd-Molly )of more than 200 people Friday at the Saskatoon Inn.

"Bill 80 is a priority for this government. This bill is going to pass," Norris said.

He said the bill will ensure a more "competitive" construction industry in the province and give employees more choice.

Norris notes credible unions such as the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers favour the bill. ( See Molly Note )

The NDP Opposition sparred with the government this week over the issue, and groups such as the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour say it will weaken the power of workers.

The bill would allow new unions into Saskatchewan's construction industry and permit wall-to-wall certifications of a job site instead of having all unionized construction workers belong to the craft union associated with their trade.

The government had hoped the bill would pass next week, but due to a lack of agreement between the parties, it likely won't pass until the end of the spring sitting in May 2010.
◙◙◙◙◙◙◙◙◙◙◙◙◙
MOLLY NOTE:
It seems to be true that one representative of the CEP Union did indeed speak in favour of the Bill at a public hearing. Once more, as Molly has remarked before on this blog, all the better to never let speakers up to say anything when they are drunk. How "solid" this support is can be judged from the CEP website where there is not a single mention any such support. Can you say "red faces" ? If there is any such support within the union it has its opposition within the union as the following petition, courtesy of the CEP Union Blog, makes plain. Look it over and sign it if you'd like. The address is given above under "petition".

Stop Bill 80's Amendments to the Construction Industry Labour Relations Act
Category: Employment
Region: Canada
Target: Saskatchewan Party
Web site: http://www.cepunion.blogspot.com/
Background (Preamble):
On March 10, 2009 the Saskatchewan Party Government Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Rob Norris tabled amendments to the Construction Industry Labour Relations Act.“Assistant Deputy Minister Mike Carr confirmed in a stakeholder briefing that the construction and other unions in Saskatchewan did not ask for this and that none were consulted prior to its introduction. The government says it’s about so-called freedom of choice for employers and employees.
We say it is about opening the door to certain employer-dominated unions to do wall-to-wall certifications of construction projects,”says SFL President Larry Hubich. Trades unions have long argued that wall-to-wall certifications, rather than the current system of certifying on a craft basis, will lead to deskilling and lower wages. The amendments also remove ‘maintenance’ from the definition of construction industry, which means a significant portion of unionized construction work will no longer be covered by the Act.
“Once again, the government is gutting legislation that affects thousands of workers without consulting them in advance. We saw this with last year’s essential services legislation and the amendments to the Trade Union Act. Now they’re doing it with the construction trades.
This government is obviously intent on breaking unions in every sector,” says Hubich.“It makes no sense to change the way in which construction workers are certified: the government’s own numbers show that despite the giant boom in construction over the past five years, that the unionization rate has remained the same. The system works for the trades union members because they are assured of a collective agreement and it works for employers, who are provided with skilled labour out of the union hiring hall.

The Petition:
"The amendments purposed under Bill 80 to the Construction Industry Labour Relations Act are unjust and unnecessary. That the present system has worked fine with over 17 years with a work disruption. That the Saskatchewan Party Minister of Government Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Rob Norris stop the amendments to the Construction Industry Labour Relations Act as purposed under Bill 80."

Torch relay disrupted in Quebec:
Here is the statement issued by "Québec Flame" following yesterday's rally . Note that Michael Lessard, a CMAQ activist, agreed to share with us some photos of the rally (they are here).
Olympic Torch Rally Disrupted in Québec:
Thirty demonstrators answered the call of the Olympic Resistance network yesterday when the Olympic flame arrived in Quebec City.
From 17.00, leaflets inviting passersby to the rally and highlighting some issues related to the Torch were distributed around the site of the "celebrations". At 18:00, the rally took shape in Place d'Youville where people unfurled a banner that read: We light the flame of resistance``. Armed with a megaphone and a drum, the group quickly decided to move to the corner of St-Jean Honore-Mercier to attract more attention.
For an hour and a half, several people were distributing various pieces of information about the Olympics. The main issues raised were: occupation of stoelen land, ecological devastation and waste, publicity stunt for multinationals, increased discrimination, gentrification of the city and destruction of affordable housing, public finance crisis, frenzied security and erosion of rights and freedoms .. . In a Cause Commun Cause Express prepared and circulated by the anarchist collective La Nuit, we could also read an argument against the coming Olympic Games in Quebec City in 2030. In all, approximately 600 documents were given out.
As if the demonstration`s appeal was not enough (extinguish the Olympic flame!), The police response was disproportionate: in that place there were more police than protesters, without counting the buses of riot-ready police ready to intervene, and dozens of police cars escorted the flame, all of course, at taxpayer expense. So the floats' sponsors were booed, the torch's journey has been met with "No Olympics on Stolen Land," the slogan chanted by protesters accompanying the flame to the Place de l ' National Assembly where the official showwas held in the presence of the Prime Minister and the mayors of Quebec and Vancouver. After a grand entrance to the site with their banner, the protesters finally packed it up, finding it difficult to hear the singing of the national anthem of a colonialist country that will host the world on land never ceded by indigenous people !
The Olympic flame continues its journey today in different parts of Quebec, then to head towards the south shore. Remember that the relay of the Olympic Torch this year was disrupted when it left Athens and then, upon his arrival in Victoria. There are also various forms of protest along the route, including Halifax, Fredericton and Sept-Iles. Militant activities against the Olympics are also expected in Sherbrooke, Drummunville, Montreal, Toronto, Guelph, Winnipeg .....

CANADIAN POLITICS/INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS:
STOP CANADIAN COMPLICITY IN TORTURE:
While the political football of the "torture scandal" is being tossed back and forth amongst Canada's political parties there at least some who preserve an ethical compass in the debate. While the government of (Sneaky) Stevie Harper continues to stonewall and add further legal hurdles to an open inquiry into how Canadian troops knowingly handed over detainees to the Afghan government for torture the opposition parties concentrate on the "who knew what when" aspect. Every once in a while (more often in the right wing press ) the mask is dropped and the Conservatives pull the 'Oh Canada' card ie "what the hell do you care about what happens to enemies you traitorous, yellow bellied, blah, blah, blah sons of bitches". I love it when this happens because it at least makes the problem under discussion clear. In truth the opposition, perhaps from political reasons of decorum, hasn't raised the obvious. When you turn detainees over to the present quisling government of Afghanistan what do you expect other than either torture or a speedy release due to the proper bribes being paid. The last time I looked the government of Afghanistan was indeed the government of Afghanistan. I hope that I am not mistaken and that they have not all become Sufi mystics who have given away all their worldly goods and vowed benevolence to all when I was not paying attention. To put it at its bluntest...what the fuck do you expect, other than torture for those who cannot pay the bribes from this crew ? Perhaps the majority of sheep who follow the dictums of their rulers in the Conservative Party may believe the lies, but I am sure that the more intelligent bureaucracy of the Conservative Party have no such illusions.

Those who do indeed preserve an independent moral compass (something that the average conservative is in sorry need of) include Amnesty International Canada. Here is their statement of opposition to the way that Canada is complicit in torture in Afghanistan and their appeal to join your voice to theirs in protesting this state of affairs.
¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢
TORTURE IN AFGHANISTAN:
These have been a couple of intensely busy weeks. Amnesty International has been raising concerns about Canada’s approach to handling prisoners apprehended on the battlefield in Afghanistan for over seven years. Now it has become one of the dominant issues in the country. I'd like to share with you some reflections about the disturbing information and heated political debate regarding very real concerns that over the past several years an unknown number of prisoners, picked up by Canadian troops, and then transferred to Afghan officials, have almost certainly been subject to brutal torture in Afghan jails.

I am very proud of the role that Amnesty International has played in pressing for action on this issue. Working against torture has long been a priority for Amnesty International, right around the world. In that work we seek to expose the torturers, but we also expose instances where other officials and even other governments may be complicit in torture, including by handing over likely victims.

Torture is abhorrent. Complicity in torture is shameful. Both are against the law. That is what is at stake for Canadians as we confront these latest revelations.

Why should Canadians care what happens to detainees once they're in the Afghan prison system? See Questions & Answers

Amnesty International, alongside the BC Civil Liberties Association, first raised questions about Canada’s prisoner policy in Afghanistan in 2002. ( Under a Liberal government- Molly )

At that time Canadian troops were handing prisoners over to US forces in Afghanistan. We called for those transfers to be halted because some of the prisoners were being sent on to Guantánamo Bay and others were at real risk of torture in US detention facilities in Afghanistan. Combined with US refusal to recognize the applicability of the Geneva Conventions to those prisoners meant, we insisted, that Canada was violating our own international obligations when we handed prisoners over. We urged Canada to consider developing its own capacity to hold prisoners.

Eventually the government agreed with us, and halted transfers to US forces in late 2005. But they traded one human rights problem for another. Since that time, prisoners have instead been delivered to Afghan authorities, even though torture and ill-treatment in Afghan jails is a longstanding and widespread reality in the country. We again called for Canada to take a different approach. We urged instead that the government develop a cooperative approach to overseeing the detention of these prisoners, doing so in collaboration with Afghan officials and with other NATO allies. Unfortunately the government did not take up the suggestion. Transfers continued.
Why a Public Inquiry?
After years of public campaigning and raising concerns directly with successive Canadian governments, Amnesty International eventually turned to the courts and tribunals for a remedy. Here’s a look at the path we took to get there

In early 2007 we launched an application in Federal Court seeking an order halting the transfers. We also lodged a complaint with the Military Police Complaints Commission asking that body to look into it, as military police did play a role in the transfers. We were faced with considerable government resistance and obstruction on both fronts and both proceedings became difficult and bogged down. Despite some promising initial rulings, in the end the Federal Court case could not go ahead when the courts ruled that the Charter of Rights (the entire legal basis of our case) did not apply to the actions of Canadian soldiers outside Canada. That, clearly, is a very worrying legal precedent with implications beyond this case.

Amnesty is calling for a full, public Commission of Inquiry regarding the handling of Afghani detainees.

Following Richard Colvin’s explosive testimony two weeks ago, a parade of witnesses has come before the parliamentary committee now looking into this, including retired Generals and our current Ambassador to China.

There has also been a false debate about proving torture. The government has insisted that no incident of a transferred prisoner being tortured has been proven.

One is left with the impression that the only proof the government would accept is to be present while the torture occurs and witness it firsthand. The proof of torture in Afghan prisons and that transferred prisoners have been tortured is overwhelming and it is very disturbing.

Richard Colvin, who the government tasked with looking into this for 1 ½ years, certainly reached that conclusion. But having assigned him the task, the government preferred to disregard his message. He is not alone. Canadian journalists have, through tenacious investigative reporting, uncovered numerous cases of transferred prisoners who provide detailed and credible accounts of torture. The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (funded and supported by Canada, to our credit) has expressed concern. Other Canadian government monitors have documented cases. And there is good reason to believe that the Red Cross has also raised concerns with the Canadian government.

Instead of denying these concerns and impugning the messengers, it is time to take action.
Torture is an egregious human rights violation. By its very nature it destroys the sense of human dignity that is at the heart of the very concept of human rights. Canada clearly stands against torture. It is imperative, therefore, that we be firm and resolute in our refusal to in any way cooperate with or assist torturers. But we have not witnessed that firm, resolute stand over the past several years. Certainly not in the last two weeks. Clearly this has upset large numbers of Canadians who do not believe that this reflects their Canada.

Amnesty International and the BCCLA have jointly called for a public inquiry into this matter. Many others have as well, including all three opposition parties and leading media editorials across the country. We will now press hard for that inquiry to be convened. It is only through a public inquiry that we will gain a full understanding of what has unfolded over the past several years. A public inquiry would also offer recommendations for a different approach, one that would fully conform with our international human rights obligations. THE LETTER:
Please go to THIS LINK to send the following letter to the Prime Minister of Canada.
ÆÆÆÆÆÆÆÆÆ
Dear Prime Minister Harper:
Canada has pledged to be part of the effort to restore and uphold human rights in Afghanistan. Yet Canadian forces continue to transfer detainees to Afghan custody despite the risk of torture and ill-treatment.

I am shocked that the Canadian government has chosen to dismiss the reports of human rights organizations and even some of its own trusted officials. I am further disappointed by the obstruction of efforts – whether through the courts, tribunals or even the parliamentary system – to clarify the handling of prisoners in Afghanistan.

Accountability and transparency are essential to the promotion of human rights both at home and abroad. It’s time for Canada to live up to the same responsibilities we demand of others.
I urge you to convene, without delay, a full, public Commission of Inquiry into all aspects of the laws, policy and practice that has governed Canada’s approach to handling prisoners in Afghanistan.

This happened after months of trying to reach a new collective agreement with the employer.Workers and their union were fighting off major concessions, including layoffs and workers having to re-apply for their very own jobs.

CANADIAN POLITICS:
WHY OPPOSE THE OLYMPICS ?:
Molly has devoted a lot of time on this blog to covering various aspects of the protest movement against the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver/Whistler. Why ? Here, from the website of the No 2010 group are ten good reasons.
åååååååååååååååå
Why We Resist 2010:
Why We Resist
the 2010 Winter Olympics
The Olympics are not about the human spirit & have little to do with athletic excellence; they are a multi-billion dollar industry backed by powerful elites, real estate, construction, hotel, tourism and television corporations, working hand in hand with their partners in crime: government officials & members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
10 Reasons to Resist 2010
1. Colonialism & Fascism
The modern Olympics have a long history of racism, from its early founding members (i.e., Pierre de Coubertin, a French Baron who advocated sports as a means of strengthening colonialism) to recent IOC presidents. The 1936 Berlin Olympics empowered Hitler’s Nazi regime. Both the 1988 Seoul and 2008 Beijing Summer Games helped legitimize authoritarian regimes in Asia. The 1968 Mexico City Olympics (where over 300 student protesters were massacred by soldiers, days before the Olympics began) also helped legitimize state terror. IOC President Avery Brundage, an infamous US racist and Nazi sympathizer, didn’t even acknowledge the massacre. But when two Black US athletes raised their fists in a Black power salute on the medal podium, he had them immediately stripped of their medals and ejected from the Games! Another well-known fascist IOC president was Juan Antonio Samaranch (IOC president from 1980-2001), a former government official in Franco’s fascist regime in Spain.
2. No Olympics on Stolen Land
BC remains largely unceded and non-surrendered Indigenous territories. According to Canadian law, BC has neither the legal nor moral right to exist, let alone claim land and govern over Native peoples. Despite this, and a fraudulent treaty process now underway, the government continues to sell, lease and ‘develop’ Native land for the benefit of corporations, including mining, logging, oil & gas, and ski resorts. Meanwhile, Indigenous peoples suffer the highest rates of poverty, unemployment, imprisonment, police violence, disease, suicides, etc.
3. Ecological Destruction
Despite claims to be the “greenest Olympics” ever, and PR statements about ‘sustainability’, the 2010 Olympics will be among the most environmentally destructive in history, with tens of thousands of trees cut down & mountainsides blasted for Olympic venues in the Callaghan Valley (near Whistler) & the Sea-to-Sky Highway expansion. In the summer of 2007, a record number of black bears were hit on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, with at least 11 dying (attributed to loss of habitat). Massive amounts of concrete used in construction have also caused millions of Salmon to die in the Fraser River, where tons of gravel are being mined to make concrete.
4. Homelessness
Since winning the 2010 Winter Games in 2003, Vancouver has lost over 850 units of low-income housing; during the same period, homelessness has increased from 1,000 to over 2,500. It is estimated by 2010, the number of homeless may be as high as 6,000. Since the 1980s, Olympic Games have caused the displacement of over 2 million people (Fair Play for Housing Rights report, 2007). In Seoul 1988, some 750,000 poor were displaced, in Atlanta 1996, over 30,000, and for Beijing in 2008, an estimated 1.5 million have been displaced. Yet still today Olympic officials talk about ‘sustainability’ and ‘Olympic legacies’!
5. Criminalization of the Poor
To ‘clean out’ the poor and undesirables, Olympic host cities routinely begin a campaign to criminalize the poor. In Vancouver, the city has launched Project Civil City and new by-laws to criminalize begging for money, sleeping outdoors, etc. It has also included hundreds of thousands of dollars for increased private security (i.e., the Downtown Ambassadors). New garbage canisters on streets make it more difficult for the poor to gather recyclables, and new benches make it impossible to lay down. These measures fit with government plans to remove poor downtown residents to mental institutions, “detox centers” on former military bases, and the ‘fly-back’ scheme by police to return persons wanted on warrants in other provinces. This is nothing less than a process of social cleansing!
6. Impact on Women
Events such as the Olympics draw hundreds of thousands of spectators and cause large increases in prostitution and trafficking of women. In Vancouver, over 68 women are missing and/or murdered. Many were Native, and many were reportedly involved in the sex trade. In 2007, the trial of William Pickton occurred for six of these murders, and he is to be tried for an additional 20 more. In northern BC, over 30 young women, mostly Native, are missing and/or murdered along Highway 16. The 2010 Olympics and its invasion of tourists and corporations will only increase this violence against women.
7. 2010 Police State
Some 12,500 police, military and security personnel are to be deployed for 2010, including Emergency Response Teams, riot cops, helicopters, armoured vehicles, etc. The RCMP plan on erecting 40 km of crowd-control fencing along with CCTV video surveillance cameras. Special security zones will be established to control entry near Olympic venues. For 3 weeks, Vancouver will be an occupied Police State! And once the Olympics are over, there is no guarantee many of these security measures will not remain (i.e., CCTV).Repression also involves attacks on anti-Olympic groups & individuals, including arrests of protesters, raids of offices, surveillance, media smear campaigns, cuts to funding programs, etc., all in an effort to undermine anti-2010 resistance. This repression has already been used against anti-poverty & housing groups, environmentalists and Natives, in Vancouver.
8. Public Debt
VANOC and government officials claim the 2010 Games will cost some $2 billion. However, this amount doesn’t include the Sea-to-Sky Highway expansion, the Canada Line Skytrain to the airport, the Vancouver Convention Center, or the lower mainland Gateway Project. Including these costs, since they were necessary to win the bid and had to be completed by 2010, makes the true cost of the Games some $6 billion, which must be paid for through public debt, money that could’ve been spent on social services, housing, drug treatment, healthcare, etc.
9. Olympic Corruption
The modern Olympics are well known for their corruption, including both top IOC officials involved in bribery scandals (i.e. Salt Lake City 2002) or athletes found to be using performance-enhancing drugs (such as steroids). Yet the IOC still claims the youth need an inspiration and a “model” of good sportsmanship! Despite published reports of bribery scandals involving IOC members and host cities (i.e., The New Lords of the Rings, by Andrew Jennings), the Olympics continue to be seen as an honorable & noble enterprise, thanks to the corporate media.
10. Corporate Invasion
Government’s and business use the Olympics as a means to attract corporate investment. In BC, the Liberal government has ‘streamlined’ application processes, cut taxes, and offered other incentives to increase certain industries such as mining, oil & gas drilling, and ski resorts. This includes large increases in transport systems, including new ports, bridges, expanded highways & rail-lines. This is all part of their Investment to 2010 Strategy. The results have been dramatic, record-breaking increases in these industries, resulting in greater environmental destruction and more corporate power & influence over our daily lives.

Many of the main corporate sponsors of the Olympics are themselves responsible for massive ecological destruction and human rights violations, including McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Petro-Canada, TransCanada, Dow, Teck Cominco, etc., while others are major arms manufacturers (General Electric & General Motors).

BLOGGING:
SNIFFING OUT THE POLITICOS:
As the whole world ( or at least that small handful of fans that I have) knows Molly has once more been nominated for the 'Best Political Blog' over at the Canadian Blog Awards. Last year I made it into the finalists, but I ended up as the fifth out of five. This year it's heavy duty campaigning, so get used to the nagging tone of my voice. If you'd like to vote for Molly just go to the CBA website, click on the Vote 2009 link on the masthead, search for the 'Political' category, click again, look down the list for 'Molly's Blog' and there you go.
Meanwhile I found it interesting to search down the political biases of the 47 nominations in this category. The largest number (15) were obvious Conservatives, of which only four or five were of the mouth frothing variety. Most were quite intelligent. I suspect that the large number of conservative bloggers nominated is because most conservatives feel the overwhelming need to yell more often than the rest of us. The next on the list were NDPers at 10, mostly from out west here. Sort of sad as all their best rhetoric and catchphrases have long since been stolen by the Liberals...or even the Conservatives. The category of "vague lefty" held 8 entries. What can I say ? NDPers in drag ? Likely to vote for the Green Party if drunk enough. There were 7 entries that I couldn't categorize, some of them because I had a hard time figuring what was at all "political" about their blogs. My ignorance I guess. The Liberal Party had a sad 6 entries. If the blogosphere were reflective of actual public opinion they would be in deeper doo-doo than they already are. There was one 'libertarian'. Or maybe she was conservative. I had a hard time typing her. Then, of course, there was our heroine , the brave Mollymew, sole anarchist in the lot. Hopefully hissing and spitting her way to victory. Vote for Molly if for no other reason than to flip the bird to the parties that the others favour.

CANADIAN POLITICS/CANADIAN LABOUR:
A MILE OF BULLSHIT FOR AN INCH OF TRUTH:
You could not imagine my joy when I came across the following at the CEP Union website. It beautifully ties together the last two posts, one about undercover police and one about a branch of the CEP union. The photo above would be a true cold water bath to try and shock certain 'fashion anarchists' who disgrace the name into some sort of realization of what they are doing. Flick it in front of them and ask, "who are the good guys and the bad guys in this picture".
The answer. The three masked hoods to the right are actually three undercover policemen who were caught red-handed at the 2007 Montebello summit trying to get the rock throwing going. What they were has long since been independently verified, though their identities and who gave the orders for their actions are still a deep dark secret two years later. The grizzled old guy in the suit at the left (an appropriate position ) is Dave Coles of the CEP Union, one of the unionists present at the demonstration who intercepted the 'Police/Black Bloc' before they could put their plan into action and sent them skittering behind police lines for protection. Since that time the CEP Union has taken a somewhat personal interest in getting to the bottom of this incident. Here, from their website, is their latest news on the subject.

Union dragged through bogus process to find out who gave undercover police orders at Montebello:
OTTAWA (December 3, 2009 ) -- As Canada prepares to host the G20 summit next spring, the president of one of Canada’s largest unions is committed to ensuring that protesters won’t be baited by undercover police, as they were at the North American Leaders Summit in Montebello, Qc.

“We are being dragged through a bogus process to get to the bottom of what really happened at Montebello,” says Dave Coles, president of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, “but we are determined to leave no stone unturned to find out who gave police their orders.”

“It is crucial,” he says, “that as the G-20 meeting looms for next spring, that Canadians can confidently exercise their free speech rights, free from the threat of police intimidation and violence.”

“At the same time, world leaders must know that they can come to Canada without having to worry about violence instigated by police agents to discredit those who want to assemble peacefully to express their views.”

Coles made headlines two years ago when his attempts to stop undercover police officers from infiltrating the peaceful protest were posted on YouTube.

CEP immediately called for an independent judicial inquiry to find out who ordered the police to try to turn a peaceful protest into a violent one, but was told it had to take the case through the Quebec Ethics Committee, established under the Police Act.

That committee has now agreed to a public hearing, but is seeking to hand prosecution of the case over to a public official who has already concluded that the police involved should be excused of wrongdoing.

“So the guy who is prosecuting, is the same guy who has already whitewashed the whole affair,” says Coles. “It’s a total charade.”

CEP today took the precedent-setting step of applying for standing as a party to the hearing before the Ethics Committee with the right to call evidence and conduct cross examination.

“CEP is committed to getting to the bottom of what really happened at the Montebello Summit in 2007, says Coles. “We will continue to push for an independent judicial inquiry into this whole cover up, and take whatever steps we need to get there.”

CANADIAN LABOUR-KITIMAT/TERRACE BC:
SELF MANAGEMENT IN THE MOUNTAINS ?
Now here's an encouraging piece of news, fresh in from the Terrace Standard out BC way. The Eurocan West Fraser pulp and paper mill out there was due to close down at the end of the month/year. Rather than meekly accept the result the workers involved, represented by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP Union) held a vote, and 91% of the workers involved in one local supported the idea of buying out the plant and operating it as a producers' cooperative. According to the article they have the enthusiastic support of local municipal councillors and at least the half-hearted approval of the provincial government. The CEP union is one Canadian union that is quite supportive of such initiatives, and their buyout of the CHEK TV station in Victoria BC has recently been approved by the CRTC (November 9). That purchase was, admittedly, a rather mixed affair, involving not just the station employees but an unnamed "consortium" of local investors. One can hope that the people in Kitimat/Terrance will see fit to go with either a "pure" producers' co-op or some sort of mixed worker/community ownership. Not that private investment should be totally disavowed, but any such input should purchase either non-voting shares or bonds ie managerial control should not reside in people outside of the workers and the community. The CEP union is quite the creative outfit. besides the official website mentioned above interested people can also follow the actions of the union via the (quite) unofficial CEP Union Blog. See also the website of CEP Union Local 298.
Actions such as these are to be highly commended, with due deference to the financial difficulties that are often involved. They are actually a much more practical way to respond to not just the present economic difficulties but also to the desire of ordinary workers to live a better life in sunnier times. It is actions such as these, not demands for nationalization nor government bailouts, that build the sort of democratic and local (libertarian) socialism that Molly believes in. It is only sad that this sort of thing is usually only undertaken at the worst possible time-one where the firm in question has buggered up its finances up to or beyond the point of no return.
Here's the story.

UNION FAVOURS PULP MILL PURCHASE:
UNIONIZED WORKERS workers at West Fraser’s Eurocan pulp and kraft paper mill are supporting the idea of buying the operation the company wants to close down the end of next month.

First results from voting earlier this week indicate 91 per cent of the members of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada Local 298 support of the idea, according to a union spokesperson. At press time, results were not yet available for the decision of Local 1127.

Forest minister Pat Bell, in Kitimat Tuesday, said he’s a “big fan of employee-owned business models.”

“The power of employees with their own money invested in an operation is significant,” he said. “I’d never want to bet against someone who, not only is their job on the line, but their house is on the line because they just mortgaged it to invest in the facility.”

“If there’s a future for West Fraser, it is likely under an employee ownership model of some kind.”

Kitimat mayor Joanne Monaghan said that a group was formed in-camera at the Nov. 30 council committee of the whole meeting. The group’s members, from both the union and council, will work together to decide the feasibility of a union buyout of Eurocan.

Councillors Richard McLaren, Randy Halyk as well as district manager Trafford Hall volunteered to be part of the team.

“It is an avenue that needs to be pursued,” said Monaghan.

Kitimat councillors were informed of the idea of a union purchase at their Nov. 23 council meeting by Local 298 president Mary Murphy.

“On November 30th, I’ll be requesting direction and support from my membership for a buyout strategy,” she said. “Both locals will need a huge amount of support in order to make this venture a success.”

Her presentation was followed with applause from the council gallery.

“The closure of Eurocan will have a direct effect on Kitimat, Terrace and everyone in BC,” she said. “CEP National and our local union are continually looking for opportunities in having the mill viable and running. I believe that the mill can be successful, and I’m not the only one.”

Her announcement came on the heels of news that an unnamed Chinese company had expressed interest in the mill.

Provincial forest minister Pat Bell has also told reporters that a company with “fairly large interests in China” is looking at the mill’s financial records.
