1. "DARWIN"At the Images Festival

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 11 PM

Polish Combatants Hall,

206 Beverly at Cecil

TORONTO

We kick off this insanely productive month with a new movie! "Darwin" was produced for the most excellent Images Festival's "One Take Super 8" event, which means that I haven't even seen it yet - edited in camera, all 25 films get their first-ever run through a projector at this screening. Let's just say that mine involves giant Galapagos tortoises and unnatural sex acts. If that doesn't hook you I don't know what will.

Be there!

More details on this and other screenings available at http://www.imagesfestival.com/ .

2. TORONTO ANARCHIST ASSEMBLY

SATURDAY APRIL 10 - SUNDAY APRIL 11

Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil at Beverly

TORONTO

Spending a lot of time at this intersection this month! Here's your first chance to grab that choice Satan Macnuggit merch in 2010. I'll be tabling my highly coveted zines and DVDs, plus all kinds of goodies from the fine folks at Microcosm Publishing, from 10:30-3 on Saturday and from 10:30-5 on Sunday. There will also be a whole bunch of wicked workshops and fun stuff all weekend, including Friday which I'll miss. Everything you need to know is at http://torontoanarchistassembly.blogspot.com/ .

3. "REPRODUCTION PROHIBITED"

At In The Soil

SATURDAY APRIL 17 - 8 PM

On the wall of the former Russell Hotel (corner of St. Paul & James Sts)

ST. CATHARINES

Yet another premiere. "Reproduction Prohibited" is a collaboration between myself and composer Monica Clorey, constructed from hundreds of cut-and-paste manipulated frames from ancient phys ed film strips. Magnified, distorted and animated, these wrestling and swimming scenes morph into a perverse ballet in tandem with Monica's electro-acoustic score. This free outdoor screening is part of In The Soil - Niagara's Homegrown Arts Festival, which highlights a ton of local artists and musicians in events throughout the month. You can see thefull lineup at http://www.inthesoil.on.ca/ !

4, "JACOB TWO-TWO"

FRIDAY APRIL 23 - 9:30 PM

At Trash Palace - secret location!

TORONTO

This week marks the start of a brand new season at Toronto's Classiest Cinema, and my first contribution is yet another Canadian classic - a wondrously cheap, deliriously kinky adaptation of Mordecai Richler's legendary kids book about nice little boys being kidnapped and taken to a fantastic slave camp by a fish guy, a chicken lady, and a wimpy masked wrestler. It's really great. In addition to our ongoing "Captain America" serial (come this week for episode one!) I'll also be throwing in "Ramona's Bad Day", a 16mm print of the 80s TV show starring an impossibly tiny Sarah Polley! And yes, I am still clinging doggedly to the pretense that Trash Palace's address is a secret - tickets are available at Eyesore Cinema, 801 Queen St. West, and the address is printed thereon. The full rundown on our greatest season yet (and I'm serious) is at http://www.trashpalace.ca/ .

5. KAZOO ZINE FAIR

SATURDAY APRIL 24 - 11 AM - 3 PM

Ed Video,

40 Baker Street

GUELPH

Guelph's only zine fair is presented as part of the Kazoo! fest, a five-day orgy of music and art. We are promised "guest speakers, lots of zines, workshops, cupcakes, and hopefully some hula-hooping." Plus of course, Satan Macnuggit and Microcosm Publishing, courtesy of yours truly! The full monty for this wicked event is at http://www.kazookazoo.ca/

ANTI-MILITARISM:
NEW ANTI-WAR MUSIC VIDEO:
It may not get play on MTV, but this looks interesting. Here's the lowdown from Ottawa's Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT).
XXXXXXXXXXXX
COAT's first anti-war music video:
Click above to view this anti-war music video that I put together using excerpts from tunes by Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger. This was done for the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) which is now involved in a campaign to expose CANSEC 2009, Canada's largest war-industry exhibition and trade show. Please join our efforts!
I'll be showing this video in Ottawa tomorrow night (Friday, June 12) during a slide show that I'm presenting on the role of CANSEC exhibitors in fueling war.
About the Images
All of the major weapons delivery systems (war planes) shown in this video are embedded with numerous military components manufactured in Canada by corporate exhibitors that showcased their wares at CANSEC 2009 in Ottawa, May 27-28. http://coat.ncf.ca/ARMX/cansec/topCANSEC.htm
And, what's more, almost all of these weapons systems are made by prime US war contractors that Canadians are forced to invest their retirement savings in, thanks to our government's Canada Pension Plan!
The automatic weapons shown in this video are produced and exported by Colt Canada, which also exhibited its products at CANSEC.
The victims of war seen in this video live in war zones fueled by Canadian military industries, primarily Afghanistan, Iraq and Gaza.

Yours sincerely for peace

AMERICAN LABOUR:
NEW VIDEO ON ORGANIZING AT WALMART:
The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) has a new video produced by the Walmart Workers for Change campaign on organizing at the world's biggest sweatshop. So far unionization has only been successful up here in Canada in Québec and Saskatchewan. Hopefully this will change soon. Here's the story.
############

THOUSANDS OF WALMART WORKERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY UNITE TO CALL FOR A VOICE IN THE WORKPLACE:
New Video Highlights Intimidation, Anti-Worker Tactics Associates Face from America’s Largest Private Employer
Washington, DC – Walmart Workers for Change, a new campaign of thousands of Walmart’s 1.3 million associates across the country who are standing up and demanding a voice in the workplace, today released a new video that highlights the sorts of anti-worker tactics they are facing from the world’s largest retailer.

“The associates are afraid,” said Cynthia Murray, a Walmart associate in Laurel, Maryland. “They’re intimidated, and they are afraid. My family and other families have paid the price for freedom. And when you tell me I can’t talk about a union, you’re taking my freedom from me.”

Workers in more than 100 stores in 15 states across the country have joined together and signed union representation cards, citing a lack of respect from the company, as well as poverty-level wages and sub-par benefits as reasons they need a union voice on the job.

Despite Walmart’s long and well-documented history of anti-worker activities, associates say they are emboldened by the election of Barack Obama and the introduction of the Employee Free Choice Act in Congress.

The campaign comes at a time when workers find their wages have stagnated, even as Walmart and the Walton family continue to make record profits. Walmart’s recently released 2009 10K shows the company made $13.4 billion in profits last year.

Walmart’s slogan is ‘Save Money, Live Better,’” said Vikki Gill, a former Walmart manager in St. Louis, Missouri. “Walmart is saving money and living better at the associates’ expense.”
In the new video, which can be viewed at http://www.walmartworkersforchange.org/index.php/pages/articles/walmarts_war_on_workers, 10 workers from coast to coast detail the company’s response to their organizing efforts. Dominique Sloane and Mark Moore, of Dallas, Texas, were told that their store would be closed if workers voted to organize. In Miami, Florida, Cheryl Guzman was interrogated by a manager about who among her colleagues supported a union. Linda Haluska, of Glendale, Illinois, was called into four mandatory meetings in one week, where she and her colleagues were shown anti-union, anti-Employee Free Choice videos.

“Since we’ve started talking union, the company has been holding meetings, they’ve flown people in,” said Sloan. “They’ve even mentioned as far as with the union, there’s a possibility that stores may close.”

Walmart Workers for Change is a new campaign made up of thousands of Walmart workers joining together to form a union and negotiate better benefits, higher wages, and more opportunity for a better future.

The campaign is a project of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), America’s neighborhood union. The UFCW represents 1.3 million workers nationwide, with nearly one million working in the supermarket industry. Many of UFCW members also work at national retail stores such as Bloomingdales, Macys, H&M, Modell’s Sporting Goods, Saks Fifth Avenue, RiteAid, CVS, and Syms.
###
The 1.3 million member UFCW is the nation's largest private-sector union with most members working in the retail food, meatpacking, food processing, and manufacturing industries. UFCW members represent a cross-section of America's working families. The UFCW is America's neighborhood union with more than 800,000 members working in neighborhood supermarkets across the U.S. and Canada.

Satan MacNuggit features archives of all the zines, video and music projects that S. has been involved with over the years. It Can Happen Here centres around Culp's explorations of Weyburn, Saskatchewan where the Weyburn Mental Hospital held his great-grandfather Russell Aubrey Carman from 1936 to 1962. from this now-closed landmark it swirls outward via a mural of the 1935 'On to Ottawa Trek' and the ensuing 'Regina Riots' through a trek around the present-day sites of the riots, an enquiry about the artist James Eadie, a tape=recorded memoir of Carman's daughter Sheila Currier, the Third Testament opus 'The Son of Joy', footage of several protests happening at the same time as filming in Weyburn, Ottawa and Toronto, the Weyburn church of Tommy Douglas, and Culp himself, stoned in a bathrobe and trying to make sense of it all and pull himself through the edit. many interviews and music by Culp, Picastro, Holzkopf and Matt Dolmage.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a 90 minute comedy about the "revolution of everyday lunch" in the deadly rural suburb of Grimsville, Ontario. A bunch of wayward youth take on Grimsville High, the Moose Meat Ladies and Squirrely's Pizza with their revolutionary underground grilled cheese sandwich club. NEW FROM CHRISTIE BOOKS:
Christie Books, the online free film download site has just added three new titles to its list. They all relate to 'Operation Gladio' which was part of the "strategy of tension" of the CIA and Italian right wing forces back in the 60s and 70s. Dirty tricks abound. Part of this was the bombing of the Milan Piazza Fontana in 1969, carried out by neo-fascist groups at the behest of unnamed forces in the Italian state. It later led to the murder of the Italian anarchist Guiseppe Pinelli, a case immortalized by playwright Dario Fo in 'Accidental Death of an Anarchist'. Christie Books now has a trilogy available on the acts of the spooks of that day. They are:
Gladio 1:The Ringmasters
Gladio 2: The Puppeteers
Gladio 3:The Foot Soldiers
Drop on over to download and view these and the many other offerings available at Christie Books' Brightcove site. Help support their work.
