INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-SERBIA:
TRIAL OF THE 'BELGRADE 6' BEGINS:
Molly has reported on this case before last year (see here, here and here ). The basics are that 6 activists in the Serbian Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative, the Serbian section of the anarcho-syndicalist international, the AIT, were arrested last fall and charged with firebombing the Greek embassy. As active anarchosyndicalists the comrades, of course, disagree with such tactics of individual vandalism, preferring the open class struggle. The suspicion is that the Serbian government latched on to them because they were the easiest "open targets"(given that the Serbian police force is probably a nest of incompetance to the degree that they couldn't "investigate" tying their own shoes), and they had to prove that they were "doing something".

As we speak here in Winnipeg Manitoba the preliminaries of the trial are already over and done with several time zones over, but the trial will continue. Here's a report from the local Winnipeg Wobbly Blog about this case.

Six Serbian anarcho-syndicalists are due in court today:‏
Six Serbian anarcho-syndicalists are due in court today charged with international terrorism in what Belgrade academics have condemned as a political trial.
Tadej Kurepa, Ivan Vulović, Sanja Dojkić, Ratibor Trivunac, Ivan Savic and Nikola Mitrovic, were detained on September 4th after a Molotov cocktail broke a window at the Greek Embassy in Belgrade.
Originally arrested for "causing general public danger," an allegation often associated with low-level vandalism, the activists' charges were upped to international terrorism following public comments by Serbian President Boris Tadic that he intended to crack down on "left-wing terrorism.
"The six face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the latest charges - more than double the sentence handed down for the burning to the ground of the US Embassy in 2008 in which one man was killed.
Academics at Belgrade University have condemned the trial, writing in an open letter: "We fear that this was an arbitrary interpretation of the Criminal Code and a case of its use for political purposes.
"Just in the year 2009 we have witnessed the escalation of violence and numerous threats of violence made by fascist groups. All of this was met with a mild reaction from the state prosecution and the police.
"To name just one example: in the days leading up to the Belgrade Gay Pride Parade (set for September 20th and called off due to security fears) threats of physically liquidating the gay population were called just 'polemics' by a representative of the state."
All of the six detainees are activists in or associates of the Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative (ASI), the Serbian section of the International Workers' Association (IWA). The ASI is part of a growing, independent union movement in Serbia and supporters say this is a political trial aimed at derailing that growth.
The attack itself has been claimed by a group called Crni Ilja, who said it was in solidarity with a Greek anarchist on hunger strike. No members of that group have as yet been positively identified.
The Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative has declared that they knew nothing of the attack or the group that carried it out. Ratibor Trivunac has repeatedly stated that throwing molotov cocktails is not a method of struggle used by the group.
A spokesperson for the Solidarity Federation, British section of the International Workers Association, said: "We unreservedly condemn the trial as a political attempt by the rulers of Serbia to silence an effective radical movement. Members of SF and other IWA sections are going to Belgrade for the trial to show support for our imprisoned comrades."

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-SERBIA:
SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN WITH ARRESTED SERBIAN ANARCHOSYNDICALISTS:
Since Molly lasted blogged on this matter, with material from the Greek ASI Solidarity site, there have been several solidarity demonstrations with the six Serbian comrades who are in a one month detention awaiting trial. The Polish Union of Syndicalists (ZSP)has undertaken further solidarity work, and there is a protest letter to the Serbian authorities that you can sign at their solidarity site. The last time that Molly looked there were 2,841 signatories. Here is the call for Solidarity from the ZSP.

Political Arrests in Belgrade:
On Saturday, Sept. 4, five* political activists were arrested in Belgrade on trumped up charges. The five, Tadej Kurep, Ivan Vulović, Sanja Dojkić, Ratibor Trivunac and Nikola Mitrovic, are activists in or associates of the Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative, the Serbian section of the International Workers’ Association (IWA). (* The sixth person sought by police, Ivan Savic, was also arrested some days later.)

The arrests are allegedly related to a direct action which took place at the Greek Embassy on Aug. 25. Negligible damage was done; a crack in one window, a tiny burn mark on the facade and a circled A graffiti on the embassy as a act of symbolic solidarity with Thodoros Iliopoulos. The prosecutor however imagines this as an act of “international terrorism” and would like to charge our comrades with such. If the state allows such charges to be pressed, they could be facing 3-15 years in prison.

As it is, the five were arrested, harassed and are to be held in custody for at least one month while the case is organized.

Although one of the accused, General Secretary of the IWA Ratibor Trivunac clearly and publicly declared that he knew nothing of the action, he was arrested. It is not the first time that authorities have come after him or his comrades for no other reason than the fact that they are radical critics of the state.

We are calling on people around the world to take action now!

If you can organize a protest at a Serbian Embassy, Consulate or other Diplomatic Mission, please do so ASAP. Rather than one day of action, we think actions can be spread out over a few days, but we think it’s best not to wait! Try to make an action by Sept. 15-16.

Also, send faxes and protest letters! We are including a list of addresses on this page. If you like, you can also send a letter to the government through this page. You can write your own text or use out sample text. Our page can keep a log of signatories so we may pass them on to the comrades in Serbia so they know which organizations and people have sent protests.

Please send us information about your demos, protests or articles on the case!

THE LETTER:
Please go to the Solidarity Site of the ZSP to send the following letter to the Serbian government.
@@@@@@@@@
We are writing to demand the immediate release of Tadej Kurep, Ivan Vulović, Sanja Dojkić, Ratibor Trivunac and Nikola Mitrović, arrested Sept. 4 in Belgrade on absurd grounds. The prosecutor's assertions are clearly ridiculous. It seems perfectly clear that this case has been politicized and a show case is being made out of a minor incident.

In the meanwhile, the state continues to deflect attention away from the institutionalized violence inflicted daily through war, policing and exploitation, which is the real terror of daily life for millions around the globe.

We will not stand by idly as people who fight for social justice are repressed based on their history of political activism. We will campaign for the release of these activists and for the end of state repression.

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-SERBIA:
STATEMENT OF THE ASI ON ARRESTS OF ITS MEMBERS:
Molly has given a brief report before on recent arrests of members of the Serbian Anarcho Syndicalist Initiative (ASI) on trumped up charges. The following is a statement of the ASI on these arrests transmitted via a rather convoluted process that may actually be both necessary and effective. The original source is a blog set up via a Greek site Squat.gr. Given the recent actions of the Greek government I don't know how wise this is, but I'm sure that there will be many others to stand in line (myself included) if charges are brought against the Greek site. ASI Solidarity is hosted on this site. The following came to Molly's attention via the Anarkismo website. They, in turn, sourced it from the Polish anarchist news service Centrum Informacji Anarchistycznej. As per my usual impolite fashion I have edited the following post for English grammar- as best I can. The Serbian ASI, by the way, is the Serbian branch of the anarchosyndicalist international, the IWA-AIT.
@@@@@@@@@@
Statement of Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative on Arrests of their Members:

On September, 4th 2009 District Court in Belgrade decided that arrested members of ASI will be held for thirty days in detention. Our comrades are accused of an act of international terrorism.

The Union Confederation “Anarcho-syndicalist Initiative” found out about the attack on the Greek embassy, and of the organisation that took the responsibility for this act, through the media.

We used this opportunity to remind the public once again that these methods of individual political struggle are not the methods of anarcho-syndicalism, quite the contrary – we proclaim our political positions publicly and through our work we seek to bring the masses to the syndicalist movement and all the libertarian and progressive organisations.

Wanting to brutally suppress its fiercest critics the state, through its mechanisms of repression, acted with banal logic and identifies as suspects those who explicitly stated their libertarian beliefs, and by their imprisonment ends the case and gives a false picture of its efficiency to the public.(a very important point. If you can't get the perpetrators as least get scapegoats-Molly )

The unscrupulous actions of regime’s organs can be observed from the first moments of arrest, unlawful searches of their apartments, intimidation of their families to the extreme charges of international terrorism.

Given the fact that we do not support the acts of now famous anarchist group “Crni Ilija” (Black Sun) we still cannot characterise what happened as “international terrorism”, because terrorism, by definition, entails threats to the lives of civilians, whereas in this case no one was even hurt and only symbolic material damage was done.

It is clear that this state produced farce is just one way of intimidating anyone who decides to point out the injustice and hopelessness of contemporary society.

In times of general social numbness individuals reach for the most unbelievable, sometimes even self-destructive, actions in order to break through the media blockade and to put their case in the centre of attention – let us remember the workers who cut off and ate their own fingers, or, for example, the unlucky, distressed man who threatened to activate a hand grenade in the building of the Presidency of Serbia – that is, trying to shed some light on their problems in a broader social space.

Lets not allow them to persuade us that one symbolic act of solidarity, even if expressed in a certainly bad manner, together with any other act of rebellion of those who are left with no rights should be treated as an antisocial act and an act of terrorism.

We express solidarity with the arrested comrades and their families and demand the truth about this case!
FREEDOM FOR ANARCHO-SYNDICALISTS!

MOLLY NOTES:
The exact "offense" with which the members of the ASI are charged is really one of doing nothing but reporting an act of vandalism without saying that the vandals might actually have something to complain about. From the point of view of the Serbian state it did not matter that the ASI explicitly condemned the tactics of the vandals. As in many other states across the world the government is only satisfied with total agreement with their own way of describing the motives of either "terrorists" or even minor vandals. The apotheosis of this was the insistence of the US government that terrorist attacks on the USA were because "they hate us for our freedoms". This, of course, is silly, but it was (and is) believed by a large segment of the American population who cannot understand how bombing people gets them pissed off.

What the ASI was charged with was something that I have certainly done many times on this blog-despite my determination to not give any publicity to the nutters in the USA who have identity crises and think they can solve them via vandalism-ie report an incident, decry the tactics used but remind the reader that there are real social issues behind the "incident". I've done this over and over, and other rational leftists-anarchist and otherwise- have done it to the tune of millions of times over the years. Others, not even leftist, have also committed this "crime" to the tune of tens of millions". It's what is called reality outside of the ambitions of a state to give only its own point of view. If for no other reason the comrades of the ASI deserve everyone's support because they are simply telling the truth.
@@@@@@@@@@
FURTHER IMPORTANT NOTE:
The ASI Solidarity site has published a caution fregarding possible solidarity actions. Due to the present legal situation of the imprisoned comrades it is wise that others refrain from actions other than publishing the ASI statement for the moment.

INTERNATIONAL LABOUR-SERBIA:
STRIKE WAVE SWEEPS SERBIA:
As we speak there is a wave of strikes across the country of Serbia, one of the successor states to the ex-Yugoslavia. Sad to say these fragments of Yugoslavia which was once a far better socialist alternative to the Russian Empire's so-called "communist" (read managerial ruling class) regimes have proven, post-Tito, as one more example of how a Leninist experiment leads to disaster in the end. Never mind how it has been conclusively!!!! proven that Marxist propaganda can never eliminate ethnic hatreds. That is the saddest thing. What is also sad is that the new ruling class (usually recruiting heavily from the old managers) seems to be repeating the worst patterns of larceny that occurred in the ex-Soviet Union. Those to whom the Serbian state sold assets have been engaged in a systematic pattern of theft, looting the factories, violating contractual obligations, refusing to pay wages for work already done. etc.,etc.,etc.. The word kleptocracy has been coined to describe such behavior in the former communist states and in parts of the Third World.
The following article from the Inter Press Service describes the situation and the response of ordinary Serbian workers to this looting. People won't take this laying down, but the general hope for a "solution" in re-nationalization is, in Molly's opinion a vain hope. The Serbian state is divesting itself of property for many good reasons. Calling for re-nationalization is a vain hope, a dream of a past utopia that never was as good as memory makes it (during Tito's regime Yugoslavia's main export was workers for foreign firms). The anarcho-syndicalist alternative of factory take-overs and reorientation of production is nowhere so obvious as in this sort of situation. While the Serbian anarcho-syndicalists presently lack a website(even though they are quite active) many of the other states near to Serbia have such. Molly urges her readers to consult the 'Other Anarcho-Syndicalist Links' section on this blog for further information on this part of Europe and workers' struggles there.

BALKANS: Strike Wave Sweeps Serbia:
By Vesna Peric Zimonjic
BELGRADE, Aug 28 (IPS) - A very hot summer of workers' discontent has taken over Serbia. Some 33,000 people go on strike daily in 40 to 45 firms, according to union statistics. They are mostly employees of privatised companies who have not been paid salaries or social and health security benefits for months now.
Since mid-August, protesters have been blocking traffic for hours outside the offices of the Serbian Privatisation Agency and other government buildings in Belgrade.
Earlier this month, in central Serbia, police were called in to remove hundreds of workers who lay down day after day on railway tracks near Lapovo town 150 km south of Belgrade. The now private owner of the company manufacturing spare parts for automobiles and electricity generation has not paid them for months.
In a dramatic case, a worker from the southern Serbian textile factory Raska, 254 km south of Belgrade, cut his finger off in public to protest against a new business owner.
"We are desperate, afraid for our future, betrayed by our new owner," says Stevan Sreckovic from the Ikarbus bus factory in Zemun. "Ours is one of a thousand factories throughout Serbia that have been ruined by privatisation," he told IPS at a protest last week outside the offices of the Serbian Privatisation Agency.
Since the ousting of former leader Slobodan Milosevic in 2000, the Serbian government has relied heavily on privatisation to revitalise the economy. (or simply to pay the bills by selling the family jewels ????-Molly)The state has received some 2.9 billion euros (3.7 billion dollars) through privatisation since 2002.
The government has sold 1,828 public firms, and now only 300 remain to be privatised. That is due by the end of 2009.
The protests this summer point to what workers call "the ugly face of privatisation". They come after the Privatisation Agency admitted in mid- August that of the 1,828 privatisation contracts, 472 - almost 25 percent - have been annulled because the new owners failed to honour the deals.
According to the law on privatisation, the new owners are obliged to pay the government for their newly acquired companies in up to five instalments. They are also obliged to compensate workers they cannot keep in line with an agreement with the Privatisation Agency. The sum mostly ranges from 100 to 800 dollars.
The agency is obliged to monitor developments in newly privatised companies for two years.
"After that, we practically have no further obligations," head of the Privatisation Agency Vladislav Cvetkovic told IPS. "Our task is to prepare privatisation, announce tenders and collect necessary documentation, and to make this part completely transparent."
Analysts say that the state sold many assets hastily because of an urgent need for fresh funds. Most sales were done by early 2006.
"The climate for such sales was very good, and the state filled its coffers with badly needed money," economics professor Milojko Arsic told IPS. "The money was supposed to go to pension fund, further investment in Serbian industry, and bring new jobs."
But things have been going wrong over the past year after the end of supervision by the agency.
In March, machinery from the privatised textile factory Clothing in Leskovac, 282 km south of Belgrade, was taken by its Cypriot owner to Romania earlier this year.
In May, workers from the textile factory 7. Juli in the southern town Kursumlija learnt that their machinery was gone. The Serbian owner apparently sold it abroad as scrap.
"New owners refraining from fulfilling their obligations, such as revitalising production, paying regular salaries and health insurance to workers is surfacing now," analyst Slobodan Kostic told IPS. "This is bringing people to the streets and is leading to strikes."
International consortiums from tax paradises ("tax paradise"- I love that term-Molly )are often involved in purchases. Kostic says many assets were sold to people with a murky past and with murky money.
Several heavy industry machinery and textile factories have been sold to consortiums located in Cayman Islands, Cyprus or Virgin Islands, only later to be made sites for luxurious apartment blocks or shopping malls. ("luxury apartments" and "shopping malls" in Serbia ? Molly senses an extra layer of criminality beyond the obvious here )
The agency says merely that new owners did not meet their obligations. "It is not our job to control financial resources," says Cvetkovic.
A major tycoon sought earlier this year to buy the industrial zone of Belgrade harbour and turn it into a marina to be surrounded by lavish apartment blocks and high rises. Public outcry stopped the sale.
Amidst mounting speculation that privatisation was not regular in many cases, Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic (not related to Vladislav Cvetkovic), who was head of the Privatisation Agency in 2003 and 2004, admitted to reporters last week that "by the end of that period we became aware that something was wrong." He did not elaborate.
"I will personally insist that all the contracts that have been annulled be checked," he added. But to many workers this is not enough.
The striking workers have their critics. "What we hear more often now among workers' demands in strikes is calls for the state to take over their companies," Miroslav Prokopijevic from the Free Market Centre told IPS. The Centre is one of the leading Serbian NGOs backing a free market economy. ( Welllllll...Molly has given her opinion of this above. )
"That sounds like the times of socialism (the Serbian and former Yugoslav version of communism), when the state took care of everything, and provided lifelong guarantee of employment, but those times cannot come back," he said.
ILILILILILILILIL
MOLLY NOTES:
Just for amusement let's do a little cross cultural survey of what would be labour's response to such things in various countries. Let's begin at the bottom. The usual American (in a country where you sue a restaurant if you spill hot coffee on yourself) response would be a lawsuit. Up here in Canada there would be an endless series of appeals to this that and the other government agency, punctuated with a possible battle on the picket lines and a stirring resolution from the NDP. The whole matter would be eventually be exhausted by endless debate. Over in Italy they'd have their riot and rapidly move on to the next occasion. Down in the land of the tango the factory in question would have been occupied a long time ago, and the present battle would be about its legalization. Over in France the factory would have been occupied and the managers kidnapped. Not so bad actually, as they would get to eat really good cheese and drink really good wine (no McDonald's fare for those hostages) until a compromise was worked out. In Korea the factory would have been occupied, and this would have provoked the government to send a para-military force to recover it. In China the workers would have rioted and killed the managers. All told I prefer the Argentinian solution. Can it be used elsewhere ? I certainly hope so.

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-SERBIA:
IWA GENERAL SECRETARY JAILED FOR TEN DAYS:
The following is a notice from the A-Infos website. It seems that the General Secretary of the International Workers' Association/Asociación has been sentenced to 10 days in jail for his actions during a demonstration ie burning a US flag. The mind boggles at this. I wonder if Serbia is the only country in the world to have statutes that ban the burning of other nations' flags. Or is it just the US flag in particular ? In the latter case it is even more bizarre. The history of the past few decades is one in which Serbia and the US have hardly been the best of friends, to put it lightly. I have no doubt that Serbia would like to suck up to the US as much as is possible while, at the same time keeping its Russian trump card, but still.... Maybe this is under the heading od insults to foreign "dignitaries" (cough, cough, cough, hack, hack- oops there's another hairball). In such a case one wonders about the mindset of Serbian judiciary in presuming that the burning a a US flag in a small demonstration would actually ever reach the eyes of the US Vice President, let alone that he would be insulted. The Serbian authorities give far too much credence, undoubtedly more than the demonstartors did, to the power of the demonstartion. It's bet taking time here. Has Biden become aware, or will he become aware in the future, of the 100,000,000th burning of a US flag on this particular occasion ? I give 100 to 1 odds. To say the least I am being conservative and hoarding my money on this one. The actual odds are much higher, more like winning the lottery jackpot. Any takers ? You have 1 year to produce the evidence. Anyways, on to the story.

Serbia, 10 days of prison for the IWA General Secretary
Ratibor Trivunac, member of the Union Confederation "Anarcho-syndicalist Initiative"( the website of the Serbian Anarcho Syndicalist Initiative is http://inicijativa.org/ -Molly) and General Secretary of the International Workers Association, was convicted yesterday evening to ten days of prison for the burning of the US flag in the center of Belgrade. A group of anarchists organized an illegal protest yesterday as a reaction to the visit of the US Vice President Joseph Biden to Belgrade. During the protest Trivunac burned the US flag and read a statement condemning the role of the USA in reproduction of capitalist relations, wars, exploitation and discrimination in the world.
---- Belgrade district judge Goran Milutinović sentenced Ratibor and ordered him to be immediately sent to prison without giving him a chance for appeal! Other comrades that have been arrested were released without charges. Our lawyer will try to appeal the sentence today.

Burning of the flag is a symbolic act of protest and we find the actions of judge Milutinović to be scandalous. We refuse to obey orders, we refuse to keep quiet! We will always burn the symbols of exploitation and oppression!

We would like to call for international actions of solidarity if Ratibor is not released by Saturday morning. We will keep informing you of developments. The IWA Secretariat can be contacted, as usual, by telephone number +381-63-263-775 or email (we would prefer by telephone as we may not check the email regularly during the following days).

KOSOVO:
NO WAR BETWEEN PEOPLE- NO PEACE BETWEEN CLASSES:
STATEMENT OF THE IWA/AIT SECRETARIAT:
The following is the recent statement of the IWA/AIT (the anarcho-syndicalist International) on the recent declaration of Kosovan independence. While Molly is, in no sense, a fan of the general line of the AIT she reproduces this here as an example of a principled statement of traditional anarchist principles for international solidarity and against nationalist delusions. Such uncompromising adherence to morality is the only hope the world has.
No war between people - No peace between classes!

The Kosovar ruling class, in service of US imperialism, has declared the creation of another state in the Balkans on February 17th. Several weeks after that act, and the events that followed it, we think that enough time has passed for us to try to be objective in our understanding of these events. ---- There is no doubt that behind this act of Kosovar bosses and politicians, despite what they are stating as their reasons, stands their wish to formalize and entrench positions from which they can exploit the Kosovo population in a more "independent" way. Every state, including the newly formed Kosovo one, has maintaining the system of capitalism by force as its ultimate reason for existence. A system in which a group of criminals is running the lives of the enslaved workers and peasants.
The large support given to Kosovo politicians and bosses by the citizens of Kosovo was because of the still fresh memories of the apartheid style of regime that Milosevic has pushed to its limits during his reign. Via his using the medieval Kosovo myth as an opiate for the people, Milosevic has, in a most brutal fashion, practiced politics in the interest of the ruling class in Serbia. With his nationalist politics turned against the Albanians, Milosevic was capable of diverting attention from rising social problems which started to seriously endanger socialist bureaucracy in ex SFRJ (Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia). We remember his brutal fight against Albanian workers and students, his verbal diarrhea at Gazimestan (1), but also his crimes made against the Albanian civilians pushing them to the level of second grade citizens. Today, Serbian bosses and politicians wish to repeat that trick and to continue untouched to the end with their robbery and privatization, by making us all crazy with their infinite tales about Kosovo.
As in those days, today it is also not possible to underline enough the influence of the great powers in the events occurring in Kosovo and the Balkans. The most dominant capitalist force of today, the United States of America, in whose service Milosevic was for quite some time, and which, together with its allies, has even called him once the "factor of peace and stability in the Balkans", has found in the Kosovo ruling class servants on which it can, obviously, rely much more. And while Albanian politicians are enraging people with the talks about leaving the claws of the Serbian state, they are in fact placing Albanian people in the bridle controlled by the western power-holders.
In that sense, it is not possible to question the NATO character of the new Kosovo state. From the documents, such as the plan of the UN Special Envoy at the Kosovo status process Martti Ahtisaari, which was backed up by the USA and EU, it's clear that the presence of NATO troops in Kosovo is one of the main preconditions for Kosovon "independence". Precisely in that context it is important to follow the development of the Kosovo state, which is becoming one of the most important satellites of the USA and EU in the Balkans.
When we are talking about conditions of life of different ethnic communities in Kosovo, it's not incorrect to say that the situation, when compared to the period before the 1999 bombing of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, has turned upside-down; the horrible conditions of life for Serbs in Kosovo today, a population to whom it's not possible to move or live freely without military presence, children which are not able to go to school in peace, old people who are being beaten up by Albanian nationalists etc. all testify to the catastrophic life of non-Albanian population in Kosovo.
Those, objectively horrifying conditions of life for the Serbian people, are used in the most treacherous way by the Serbian bourgeoisie to pursue its own interests, so criminal institutions, such as the Serbian Orthodox Church, are using it to try to regain its medieval positions. Intentionally confusing interests of the endangered population with the interests of the Church, priests are very clearly, all over again - just like many times before in last twenty years of maintaining and supporting warmongering politics. Wimpy, pathetic, simulated grief, false concern and chauvinist-petite bourgeois pathos are felt all over the moves and statements of Serbian political parties and institutions of the Serbian state, and are crushing any illusions about their good intentions.
The Serbian bourgeoisie is working on dividing Kosovo by manipulating the horrible position in which the Serbian population of Kosovo finds itself, and it's directing them to renounce their loyalty to Albanians and tie them to the institutions of the Serbian state. That, without a doubt, means bad luck for all Serbian workers which are living outside north Kosovo, and especially for more than ten thousand Serbs in the Å trpce region which is located in the south of Kosovo, and which will, in that scenario, be sacrificed to the interests of the Serbian ruling class.
Kosovo today is a state in which more than 50% of the population is unemployed, and smuggling, foreign donations and help from the relatives living in other countries is the main mode of survival for the population. Time will show that the anger of the Kosovo workers, because of their horrible living conditions, will very soon turn against those same power-holders after a downplay of hysteria caused by the "independence" that has been won. That anger was directed by Albanian bosses and politicians against the Serbian state and it is temporarily pushed under the carpet by the promises of the better life in a new state. History will once again confirm that states have never solved, but only created problems for the working class.
Another important factor that has to be taken into consideration if we are to grasp the situation as whole is, without a doubt, the role of Russian imperialism. Defending its interests on the international level, the Russian federation has found in the Kosovo episode an ideal opportunity to stand up against USA-EU block, and to reinforce its positions in the Balkans. By taking into consideration the present constellation of power on the Serbian parliamentarian scene, it wouldn't be strange if the Medvedev-Putin team would achieve something that Stalin and Soviet imperialism didn't manage to do fifty years ago. The aggressive approach of Russian corporations in Serbia, buying off strategic companies such as the Oil industry of Serbia (Naftne industrije Srbije - NIS), the building of main gas-pipelines through Serbia as an answer to the gas-pipeline which is under the control of the west, clearly speak about Russian intentions. On the other hand, this confirms to us that there are very serious forces within the Serbian ruling class which are working for Russian interests, and which would rather see Serbia as a satellite of Russia than as a satellite of USA.
When talking about the proclamation of Kosovo state, the Serbian ruling class very often repeats the phrase about them "stealing 15% of our territory". We ask the question - What is "our territory"? To everyone with a clear head it's understandable that when politicians speak about "our territory" they speak of the territory from which the Serbian state can gather taxes from the workers, and then criminals in power place that money into their own pockets. For the working class there is no "our" or "their" territory. The whole world is our motherland. The reaction of the Serbian government to the proclamation of Kosovo "independence" consists of organizing protests against independence in Belgrade and other places in Serbia and, with the help of Neo-Nazi organizations, outside of it; as well as of infinite repetitions of phrases about the breaking of international justice, as if it wasn't clear to everybody that international justice, as any other bourgeois "justice", is just a facade of the system in which the justice is on the side of the stronger ones.
The protest against independence held in Belgrade on February 21st speaks best about the truth of all nationalism. Without a doubt the large gathering of people, in which more than 250.000 people took a part, was a gathering in which minor fascists groups felt quite comfortable. The best proof of that is the behavior of the members of the Obraza organization, characterized as clerico-fascist even by the police, which were in the first rows of the protest posing with their regalia. But, while causing sadness with the Serbian power-holders, that protest revealed one flame that is burning under the layers of nationalist rhetoric - that is the flame of social discontent which was manifested by thousands of impoverished people who used this unsuccessful and totally simulated remake of Gazimestan to engage in proletarian shopping on a large scale. True heroes of that protest headed to the shops in the center of Belgrade and, without taking notice of the nationality of the owners of the companies, managed to get new clothes, foot-ware and other things that are something that they can not usually afford. The government tried to diminish the number of people participating in the expropriations, to make false distinction between "robbers" who were stealing and "people" who were destroying embassies of the states which recognized Kosovo. Hysterical liberals started to foam, calling on the Law to react against the "hooligans". Among a huge amount of similar statements by Serbian politicians, the statement of the primitive clerical nationalist minister for infrastructure, Velimir Ilic, has stood out with an important message. By trying to gain points among the radical-chauvinist elements of the protest, those which participated in the protest to destroy the seats of "anti-Serbian" states, he said that "even breaking of windows is democracy". We hope that Serbia will progress in that direction, and that the workers of Serbia, losers in the transition, will start with the breaking of more windows and thus strengthening the democracy, when the social unrest and anger of the humiliated and exploited finally erupts.
The negative effects of these events in Serbia are already visible
ie the silencing of any voice which is questioning the politics that is waged against Kosovo in the interests of the Serbian ruling class, and the introduction of an informal Marshall Law which means police prohibition of all gatherings which are not under direct or indirect organization by the ruling structures. Those prohibitions are opening space for bourgeois liberal forces which are taking points on the account of the authoritarianism of the regime, portraying themselves as victims prosecuted because of their supposed progressive character.
The conflict of interests of the two current ruling parties, which in this situation are forced to take clear positions, brought the downfall of the government as expected. New elections are put forward as a solution for growing problems, and the vacuum that will last until the election of new MPs will be used so that the brutal capitalist politics against Serbian workers may continue, under a "technical government", which means raising of the prices of food, electricity, fuels and all other living needs. The element they are counting on is the election campaign, this time probably crazier and more abnormal than anything we have seen before, in which they hope to blur the vision of the workers. Once again we will become collective victims of imaginative designers in the service of political parties, which will try to sell us the story of Kosovo and the EU packed in different packages.
The thing that can be seen as an important positive result of this turbulence is the fact that a large segment of people stopped accepting the idea that there is no alternative to the EU and NATO. Even if it is clear that parties that today question the orientation towards NATO and EU do that in their own political interest, and these turns in their politics are largely relying on the reorientation towards Russia, that is still very important because it opens the space for thinking about alternatives to this system. In such a situation different alternatives to capitalism are gaining strength, and in that manner our movement can expect it's strengthening in the close future.
When taking into consideration that from the highest instances in the state messages are being transmitted which are not seeing violence as "extremist" behavior, Anarcho-syndicalist initiative calls workers in Serbia to use this opportunity, to radicalize the situation in their working places and use these obscure times for the betterment of their material conditions. The thing that is placed forward as a task for all revolutionaries in Serbia is the destruction of the last, simulated remains of nationalistic mythomania, and, in that way, the opening of the space for escalation of social conflicts.
At the same time, this is a chance to strike hard blows to the loudest supporters of liberal capitalism in Serbia, blows that will make it quite hard for them to stand up in the early future. This is a chance for the workers to loudly and clearly show what they think about institutions with destructive processes that have left hundreds of thousands of people without work and a means of survival.
At this time it is of utmost importance to create and strengthen the existing relations between libertarian workers in Serbia and Kosovo, as well as the whole Balkans, and, in that way, present a clear alternative to American and Russian imperialism. We will remind you that the only time people in the territory of ex-Yugoslavia managed to really unite was during the partisan antifascist movement, made up of individuals from all nations, which succeeded in taking down the nationalist power holders that were all working for foreign powers. Today there is a need for the creation of a clear anti-imperialist, anti-NATO and anti-Russian block on the Balkans, which will unite people of all satellite states, and crushing all exponents and agents of American, European and Russian interests. Equality and freedom of all can be only achieved in a society based on self-managed libertarian communism. The Balkan workers a confederation of free communes!
Only by organizing, in strong, revolutionary, non-hierarchical unions ready to wage a strong fight against bosses and politicians, can lead to the forming of such a block. By fighting in our work places for better conditions of life and work, by radicalizing the situation and raising the tension, we can create the basics of the movement that can achieve a society worthy of us as Human beings.
For Libertarian communism!
For Anarchy!

POLAND/SERBIA/BELORUSSIA/AFGHANISTAN:
NEWS FROM THE CENTRUM INFORMACJI ANARCHISTYCZNEJ:
Molly has long carried the 'Centrum Informacji Anarchistycznej' on her list of 'Links'. This is a sort of Polish A-Infos but with graphics. lately they have experienced something of a revival in terms of activity, and now publish some great articles, news and otherwise, on a daily basis. Here's a selection from the other day. Check out the 'CIA', loosely translated as "Anarchist Information Centre' for great news, comment and humour from Poland, Eastern Europe and beyond. They have a regularly updated English section.

ANTIFA RALLY IN NOVI SAD, SERBIA:
On October 7th fascists from several countries across eastern Europe attempted to gather in the town of Novi Sad, Serbia under the auspices of the Serbian neonazi organization 'Nacionaini stroj' (National Formation). they were met by a far larger force of 5,000 people organized by a coalition of political parties, NGOs, anarchists and others. This region of Serbia is multinational and multidenominational, and the people there live in peaceful coexistence, an affront to the ideas of the neofascists. The neo-Nazi march was initially forbidden by the local authorities, but the clerico-fascist organization 'Obraz' (literal translation "cheek" but with a connotation of "honour") announced a covering rally. On October 7th a small group of fascists gathered in the town where they were opposed by the coalition. As can be expected a fight broke out, and this time the fascists got the worst of it, and not only from their opponents but also from the police. BELORUSSIA: SOLIDARITY ACTION WITH RUSSIAN ANTI-FASCISTS IN MINSK, BELARUS:
This sort of has to come under the heading of "better late than never". This is a report of an illegal action that occurred in Minsk, the capitol of Belarussia/Belarus last August 7th. News has been rather slow in getting out, but the story is now current in the ether of the "anarchosphere". The story reads as follows:
"On Saturday, September 7th of August at 2:00 pm an illegal action was organized at the Russian embassy in Minsk in solidarity with Russian anti-fascists.
Around 50 anti-fascists and anarchists showed up at the Russian Embassy in Minsk in order to show solidarity with Russian anti-fascists and in order to point out that nazis may murder people in Russia with impunity. as the action was illegal it lasted no more than five minutes. Protesters could only unroll the banner with the text 'No To Fascism!' and carry portraits of four anti-fascists murdered in russia (Timur Kacharava, Aleksander Ryuhin, Stanislav Korepanov and Ilya Bondarenko).
All of the participants managed to leave the scene before OMON showed up. Four persons were arrested. The following day all of them got a 3 day prison sentence in a kangaroo court to be served immediately. Some 15 people went to support those arrested in the court and managed to shout something to them. Those arrested were in good spirits, but it was obvious that they were frozen in prison the previous night. (In early August????- perhaps a bad translation-Molly). They should be released today. there is a danger that one of the arrestees will be expelled from University.

DODA: THE POLISH MILITARY'S 'WEAPON ON MASS SEDUCTION' IN AFGHANISTAN:
Molly has saved the best for last. The rock star 'Doda' pictured to the left is Poland's answer to the joke that goes, "what do you get when you cross Britanny Speers with Paris Hilton?" For the last few years the Polish government has been doing a major 'suck-up' to the American Empire and has sent Polish cannon-fodder (excuse me-troops) to wherever the American military has wished for a cover of "internationalism". One of these "wonderful" places is Afghanistan where 1,200 Poles are presently based. The Polish government has decided that these boys need a little morale booster, and thus they are sending 'Doda' (real name Dorota Rabczewska- not something that comes out well at MTV) to "perform" for the troops off in the desert.
This is the opportunity for a truly brilliant piece of satire at the CIA, reporting on "Doda, in one of her Polish military 'Special Forces' outfits". The article, besides being brilliant and belly-laugh inducing funny is politically incorrect enough to be banned by the Central Council of Religious and Post Modernist Scholars of the Talibanana Republic of American Leftism. All the more reason to read it. The author does a takeoff on her name, noting the probable source of the name from the Dutch "dodaars" ("fat ass") for 'little grebe". Also the Dutch alternative name "Walghvogel" or "loathsome bird" because of the foul taste of its meat. He or she also mentions the possible origin from the Portuguese "doudo" which means "crazy" or "fool". The English connotations of Dodo with extinction are also mentioned, and the author opines that "She seems to cleverly realise that her time in the high life may just suffer the same fate as the Dodo's time on Earth unless she keeps marketing herself to any and every opportunity that arises".
The article concludes with a satirical "support the troops" appeal, mostly appeals for desertion, and gems such as "You can also sponsor a copy of the edition of Playboy magazine where Doda posed nude some years ago, for Afghani children who are eager to learn Polish so that they can communicate with their latest occupiers".
All told don't miss this hilarious article. See http://cia.bzzz.net/comment/reply/8258 . Tell em that Molly sent you.
