CANADIAN POLITICS:
THRONE SPEECH INSPIRES LITTLE CONFIDENCE:
Yesterday's Speech From the Throne, outlining the soc-called plan of the Harper government to deal with the present economic crisis inspired little confidence amongst anyone. The market today did a large nose dive, dropping over 700 points at last look in Toronto. Others outside of the business community are even less inspired. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), have a very disparaging view of what was proposed. See below for their article. Over at Eugene Plawiuk's La Revue Gauche blog there are two new excellent articles on the Conservatives new plans 'Con Game' and 'The Blue Throne Speech'. Check it out for some very interesting comment about how the Harperites are trying a version of homeopathic medicine ie like cures and like and more of the policies that produced the present mess may "cure" it.
Molly has to say that every time she hears about a "speech from the throne" she is amazed at how the Queen's rep can get through such a thing with a straight face. It's some bizarre trick, to read a lengthy document while pretending all the while that it is one's own thoughts. Knowing full well that you had no hand in preparing it at all, let alone agreeing or disagreeing with its contents. I find the body language in the above photo revealing. Is the GG really leaning as far as possible away from Sneaky Stevie to express her unconscious distance from his ideas that she has to parrot ? Or does Sneaky Stevie have to change his brand of deodorant ?
...................................
Throne speech fails to impress:
A time of economic crisis calls for clear government leadership and a concrete statement on the economy. What Canadians got today is a federal government that appears disinterested in governing at all.

The throne speech shows that the current government has learned almost nothing about what caused the economic crisis we are in, nor have they offered credible solutions to get out of it.

Instead, the speech trotted out the same failed policies that got us into this economic mess: more privatization, deregulation, cuts to public programs, free trade agreements, wage constraints, and neutering of the role of the government through a “Charter of Open Federalism”. And in these turbulent economic times, the government advocates greater investment of public funds in risky public-private partnerships.

There is nothing in this throne speech to protect workers. The economic crisis will produce higher unemployment, yet the EI system has been neglected to the point that only one in four workers qualify for what are now poverty-level benefits. Nor does the speech do anything to protect workers’ pensions that have been decimated by the financial crisis.

The throne speech actually takes more away from workers than it gives. Most egregious is the government’s intention to overturn free collective bargaining by legislating wages of federal public servants. This attack on wages could filter down through the economy and mean cuts and freezes on wages for many other workers.

As the corporate tax cuts continue, workers across Canada will pay the price for the Harper government’s misguided economic policies and fiscal mismanagement. Deep cuts to spending and public sector wages will only worsen and prolong the downturn.

What Canadians needed from this throne speech was strong economic leadership in a bold three part economic plan: Relief (expansion of EI, protection of pensions); Re-investment (economic recovery plan with an ambitious infrastructure program); Re-regulation of the financial industry. The throne speech strikes out on all three.

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-BRITAIN:
ANARCHISM 2009 PROPOSAL:

The British Anarchist Federation, the English section of the International of Anarchist Federations, has proposed an educational for next year. Here's the proposal via the A-Infos website. I'm sure that further updates will appear on the website of the AF in coming months. A couple of corrections to what appears below are in order. 2009 will be the 40th anniversary of the Battle of the Bogside, not the 20th. Similarly it will be the 70th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War (the "revolution" was a dead letter far earlier, largely courtesy of the communists), not the 40th.
.............................
Britain, AF, Anarchism 2009 - public event celebrating anarchist ideas:
After the success of the Northern educational it was suggested that the AF hold a public event celebrating anarchist ideas. It is going to be a big event with the all encompassing theme of "celebrating cultures of resistance" both internationally and at home. Speakers will be coming from across the country (and the globe) to speak of their experiences in class struggle and the focus of the day will be very much on the lessons that can be learned from our ideas in practice. The year also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the miner's strike, the 40th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Revolution and the 20th anniversary of the Battle of Bogside. These events will be incorporated as central themes throughout the day.
The intention is to hire out a large venue (enough to give us a cinema space, cafe, area for stalls and large meeting area) as well as additional seminar rooms for smaller meetings. Films, music and various other entertainment will be incorporated into the day as well as the more educational stuff. It will be held in June as this will also allow us to generate a great deal of publicity for 2009 G8 (and invite some Italian comrades to come over and speak about the mobilisations).

Matthew Rickwood, a young Toronto man, is appearing in court on Thursday with his lawyer, after being charged under the Safe Streets Act this summer for "encumbering of street".
In June, Matthew had just sat down on the sidewalk in Toronto's downtown east end, when he was approached by cops and served with a court summons. He had already been given multiple tickets, carrying fines he simply cannot pay. More to the point, he had done nothing wrong. Living on social assistance, after paying his rent and board each month, Matthew is left with $56 to survive.
In a letter sent to Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair, the Police Services Board and Mayor David Miller, Gary Magee, a lawyer from Justice for Children and Youth writes, "My view...is that the increase in Safe Streets Act charges is part of a practice of "proactive policing" of youth and the poor. The practice includes harassing this population by issuing invalid tickets for Trespass, Liquor Licence Act infractions, and bylaws such as"encumbering the street", "loitering", and "fouling the street."
OCAP is calling on the police to stop the harassment of poor people through the criminalizing and discriminatory practice of ticketing, and demanding that the City of Toronto take responsibility for the actions of Toronto police. We agree with Justice for Children and Youth that resources spent on charging, prosecuting, and incarcerating poor people, should be spent instead on affordable housing, parks and quality recreation and arts programming, as recommended in the recent Roots of Violence report by Mr.McMurtry and Dr. Curling.
" The priorities of the city have to change. Join us in supporting Matthew, his lawyer, and others coming to the steps of Old City Hall to speak out against rampant police harassment that is sending poor people to jail for no reason, wasting resources, and depriving people of dignity and justice.
OCAP DEMANDS:
1. That cops stop issuing Safe Streets Act and other tickets against poor people for being poor. Last year the cops laid 10,500 Safe Streets Act tickets and thousands of other tickets for things like "encumbering the sidewalk" and other 'offences'.
2. That the mayor tell the cops to back off. David Miller must tell the police to stop laying tickets against people on the streets.
3. That the City provide legal representation for tickets. If the City's cops ticket people they should provide representation for people. Right now, people are going to jail for panhandling largely because they cannot get legal aid and have no one to represent them in court. This is a tremendous injustice and it has an easy solution:
If the City is going to ticket, and prosecute people, they can provide lawyers too. ****************
IMPLEMENT DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL
(DADT)Campaign Calls on Chief of Police to IMPLEMENT a REAL AND FULL DADT POLICY:
Pack the meeting or give a deputation (present your arguments for a full Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy).
We are also asking people to send letters to the Board, a sample letter is attached to this callout, please cc all letters tonooneisillegal@riseup.net .
Thursday November 20th,
1:30pm
Toronto Police Services Board Meeting
Police Headquarters 20 College Street, Just West of Yonge Street
The Don't Ask, Don't Tell campaign is calling all allies, social service providers and immigrant/refugee communities to mobilize by packing the Toronto Police Services Board meeting to show our sincere concerns about the lack of a true Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy by the Toronto Police.
On February 15th 2006, the Toronto Police Services Board passed a limited "Don't Ask" policy which stated that Toronto Police would be barred from asking the immigration status of "witnesses and victims of a crime"without a “bonafide reason”.
In the spring of 2008, the Immigration Legal Committee of No One Is Illegal and the Law Union of Ontario presented a legal opinion as to why the Police needed to adopt a full don’t ask don’t tell policy. Unfortunately, under the current policy, many people without status have been misled into thinking that they can now access police services without fear. But they cannot.
As it stands, the Board and the Police Services are taking credit for a weak policy passed on paper. The legal opinion has this to say about the current policy:
A “Don’t Ask” policy alone does not make police services accessible to Torontonians without legal immigration status. For instance, persons working with non-status domestic violence survivors have indicated that police officers rarely learn of their clients’ immigration status by asking about it directly. Rather, a person’s immigration status comes to police attention when police request identification documents or when abusive spouses report the status of their victims to police officers.
The existing policy directs police to "not ask" about status - for some people, some of the time - but police are still allowed to "tell"immigration authorities about someone's status when they find out. Police usually find out about status in some way, whether through checking ID, manipulative disclosure from an abusive partner, or trusting (or fearful) disclosure from a non-status person themselves."
As well, research by the committee showed that immigration status often plays into racial profiling by the police: either the police use status as an excuse to harass people of colour, or they use it as a way to justify police stops that are based on the person’s race.
Toronto needs a full Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. Our communities deserve a full Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. As part of the ongoing campaign for full and accessible regularization for all non status people, and as part of an ongoing campaign for a full access without fear for all non status people in Toronto, No One Is Illegal is mobilizing to demand a full Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy by the Toronto Police.
Join us on November 20th at 1:30 pm at the Toronto Police Services Board and show that our communities are united in demanding Access without Fear.

LAST CALL AT THE ASHCROFT OPERA HOUSE:
The following is from anarchist musician Joey Only.
...............................

LAST ASHCROFT OPERA HOUSE SHOW EVER:
NOV22: Joey Only and Genghis Ghandi's‏
(everyone, if you can get out to Ashcroft, near Cache Creek BC and see this awesome historic venue...it's closing and there will never be another showroom in BC like it...all you who are our friends and family and brothers and sisters, let's give Martin one helluva special night!!!!)
THE OPERA HOUSE IS CLOSING - LAST SHOW EVER
- NOVEMBER 22 - ONE LAST AWESOME CONCERT!!!
from Martin Comtois (www.ashcroftoperahouse.com )
Then, we have the last party at the Opera house in this incarnation. November 22 at 8pm with dinner at 7pm. 11/22, these are powerful numbers that are very appropriate for the transition I'm in. Letting go is one of the most difficult and common things we all have to go through. Somehow the conviction that this is for the best has to ring true in order for us to accept transition. I'm getting there slowly and I count on this party to celebrate both what has been and what is ahead.
My very good friend Rob Hall and his band Ghengisk Gandhi are headlining the evening with their special brand of country reggae.
Joey Only and The Outlaw Band are also coming to the party. Joey is all about Love and Rage and I'm finally starting to understand what he means by that. You can't miss the love in Joey, his band and his music. And the rage? It's about being mad at a modern civilization that has gone so wrong. I can't think of two bands that I would rather want to end a run like this one. Bring your dancing shoes, your appetite and ditch the pumpkin, you won't be home before midnight Cinderella.
This IS the last ball baby!
Danie Pouliotte, Chad Gidinski, Tom Coles are considering coming to play as well as Van and his friends from the Yalakom.
Stephanie might even be here to say good by to the old Barn on Brink. I certainly hope you can make it too. I have some information up on the website about where I'm moving and how to get a hold of me. I'll also give you more information in my next newsletter which should be my last for awhile If you want to stay in touch and be added to my transition email list please write and let me know and I'll stay in touch.
I trust that this message is all finding you well. Thanks you all for being part of the magic ride that was.
Lot of Love,Martin

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-BRITAIN:
OCCUPATION OF UK MINISTRY:
The following is from the UK Indymedia website via the A-Infos website. The A-Infos site speaks of "editing"from the original source even though they haven't corrected the obvious misspelling in the article. Molly has. "Lead" to "led",etc.. The only editing change I could detect comparing the original to the A-Infos reprint was the replacement of "socialists" in the first paragraph by "revolutionaries" in the A- version. God knows why this was deemed necessary. Perhaps to differentiate the anarchist group in question from the Trots who also supported the cause ? Perhaps even as a bow of homage to same Trots ? This sort of "editing", however, should be viewed as rather bizarre coming from an supposedly anarchist group as a conservative defense of one welfare state provision could hardly be styled as "revolutionary". Not that the action was wrong, but, as I have expressed before on this blog, there are no revolutionaries outside of a a revolutionary situation. Trying to defend an entitlement from the state is the furthest thing from "revolutionary" that I can imagine. There may be "revolution-ists" in such a situation ie those who have a belief in the desirability and possibility of revolution but "aries" NO. What I would say is that the comrades, especially the one who did the "editing" put their beliefs in closer contract with what they are actually doing. I say this as a non-revolutionist.
That being said here's the report, inspiring in itself.
...........................
Anarcho students occupy ministry - report and photo's - Education is a priceless; it shouldn't have price:
Members of the anarchist group Autonomy & Solidarity from Goldsmith's University joined other students and revolutionaries("socialists" in original-Molly) to take action last Friday in London at the news that the government would be leaving 40,000 university goers without funding. The mainstream media have largely played this down as cutting back funding for ‘the middle class’ which is a nice way of saying the Labour Party is going deny the grants they threw us as a sweetener when they brought in top-up fees. How Scotland can afford not to charge top-up fees is left unexplained. The truth is this is part of a drive to gradually remove any kind of link between state or ‘public’ (i.e. taxpayer) funding and education. Instead they want a range of competitive market-led institutions. Of course this means that the best universities will be the most expensive and only the rich will get to go, but that is unlikely to bother our rulers when nearly 33% of MPs and almost 66% of members of the House of Lords went to private school, compared to 7% in the wider population.
The Socialist Worker website announced “students will march on the government’s department for innovation and skills” but A&S were told it would be an action; as it turned out not everyone seemed entirely sure which it was on the day either. There was a rally of about 100 students at Westminster Cathedral, then a march to the Universities Ministry 2 blocks away. When the demonstration arrived a fair number of people just went for it whilst some of the stewards looked a bit confused. After a bit of a to-do with police and security the students came out on top and took the foyer of the Ministry. A&S hung our ‘DON’T PANIC, ORGANIZE!’ banner from the first floor balcony - perhaps as much a message to the other marchers as well as the general public!
The occupation only lasted 5 minutes, which did not have much impact but on the plus side this meant no arrests and that the students were able to move off quickly and without a huge police presence. Our destination was the HM Treasury building on Whitehall to join the rally by the university workers union UCU. The 'Put people first' protest was to start at 4.30pm and had the support of trade unionists from the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS), the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and the Communication Workers Union (CWU). Some of us had to get to work so we had to leave before the rally began – we hope it was a success. We dished out 30 or so copies of the anarchist paper Freedom to interested parties (no pun intended) on our way and can be contacted through our email with any questions.

COURT SUPPORT FOR MATTHEW RICKWOOD:
Across the country municipal authorities have responded to the increasing crisis of homelessness in Canada with an overwhelming determination to not solve the problem but to make it invisible. In Ontario the so-called "Safe Streets Act" is one such tool that is increasingly being used to try and disguise the problem, a legally sanctioned method to harass the poor and homeless and drive them from public visibility.
These legal atrocities are not going unchallenged. Here's an appeal from the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) for court support for one challenge to the law. For further updates consult the OCAP website and also Homeless Nation.

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-RUSSIA:
SOLIDARITY WITH ALEKSEY OLESINOV:
The following is from the Avtonom (a Russian anarchist news site)site via the A-Infos site. It has been slightly edited for English grammar.
..........................
Russia, Solidarity with Moscow anti-fascist prisoner Aleksey Olesinov!:
On the 18th of November an action against repression of anti-fascists will take place at the Metro Station "Novokucnetskaya" in Moscow. The action will begin 16:00, and will demand freedom for anti-fascist prisoner Aleksey Olesinov. Aleksey has been imprisoned for more than 10 days already, and has been held incommunicado by authorities. His lawyer Stanislav Markelov has still not been allowed to meet with him. His state of health and the conditions in which he is kept are not known to his relatives and friends. Friends of Olesinov are certain, that he is being persecuted due to participation to anti-fascist activities.
---- Aleksei Olesinov was arrested 6th of November, and accused of "hooliganism", according to statue 213, second part of Russian criminal codex. Although he has never before faced criminal charges, he was remanded. Police were motivated to make the decision to remand him by the fact that Olesinov is an anti-fascist activist.
The formal pretext for the arrest is an insignificant fight which took place on the 30th of August between visitors to one of the Moscow clubs and the security of the club. Nobody was wounded during the fight, Olesinov was arrested the same night close to the club, but eventually the police who arrested him did not even press misdemeanor charges against him.
For unclear reasons the case of Olesinov is united with two felony investigations. One of them is the murder case of anti-fascist activist Fyodor Filatov. It is possible, that police are attempting to hide the fact that the investigation is going nowhere by arresting one of the activists of the anti-fascist movement.
The case of Olesinov is under the personal control of first vice-minister of internal affairs M.I.Suhodolskiy. It is rather unlikely, that an average case of "hooliganism" is under the personal control of first vice-minister of internal affairs.
Currently Olesinov is kept in remand prison of "Butyrka", but he was in a police prison for 6 days, which is a reason to believe that police tortured him there in order to gain information on the workings of anti-fascist movement.
Participators of the anti-fascist movement demand to stop violations of legal rights of Aleksey Olesinova, to give him access to a lawyer, and also to stop using the murder of Fyodor Filatov for purposes which have nothing to do whatsoever with the murder investigation.
Contact telephone: +7-985-997-05-24

INTERNATIONAL LABOUR/HUMAN RIGHTS:
KILLER COKE OFF CAMPUS:

The following is a repeat of an appeal published earlier this year here at Molly's Blog. The United Students Against Sweatshops are Renewing Their Campaign to get the Coca Cola Company off the campus of Indiana University to protest their long standing horrendous labour and environmental practices. Here's the appeal.
...........................
Tell Indiana University to kick Coca-Cola off campus!:
For the last 3 years, students at Indiana University have been demanding that their administration cut its beverage contract with Coca-Cola. Coke is guilty of labor and environmental abuses around the world, including complicity in the murders of 10 union members in Colombia alone. Despite this, Indiana University administrators have re-opened contract negotiations with Coca-Cola, hoping to sign another contract!
Please email the Indiana University administration today to demand that they kick Killer Coke off campus!
You can also call Indiana University President McRobbie at (812) 855-4613. Below is a sample phone script:
Hello, my name is _____________ and I wanted to urge President McRobbie to end Indiana University's relationship with the Coca-Cola corporation. The evidence against Coke is overwhelming, and ending your relationship with them would send a strong message that they need to clean up their act. Indiana University is one of the nation's leading institutions of higher education, and should show its leadership by severing all ties with Coca-Cola. Thank you for your time.
Tell me more
................................
You can also go to THIS LINK to send the following letter to the authorities at Indiana University.
...............................
THE LETTER:

Send a letter to the following decision maker(s):
IU President Michael McRobbie Indiana University President Michael McRobbie
Below is the sample letter:
Subject: Tell Indiana University to kick Coca-Cola off campus!
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],
I'm writing to state my support for the Killer Coke campaign, led by No Sweat!, a student organization at Indiana University. I'm urging you to cease all business with the Coca-Cola corporation, because of what we deem to be Coke's inexcusable violations of human and workers' rights both here and abroad. These violations include:
-The contracting of paramilitary forces to murder, torture, unlawfully detain or effectively silence trade union leaders in Colombia;
-Overexploitation of water sources in India, Mexico, Ghana and elsewhere;
-Benefiting from hazardous child labor in sugar cane fields in El Salvador as documented by Human Rights Watch;
-Giving executives hundreds of millions of dollars in stock options and bonuses while laying off thousands of employees;
-A history of racial discrimination, fraudulent business practices, tax avoidance and corporate welfare schemes.
Because of all these things, it seems clear to me that Indiana University's duty as a leading institution of higher education in the United States, is to end its relationship with the Coca-Cola corporation. More than fifty other colleges and universities in the US and Canada have already taken similar action. I would urge you therefore, to act as a leader on this issue and take a stand in support of human and workers rights.
Sincerely,
cc:

Indiana University Trustee A.D. King

.............................
Here's a little backgrounder on the activities of Coke in the country of Colombia.
............................
What's At Stake:
Students at Indiana University have repeatedly met with IU administrators to demand that Coca-Cola's contract be cut, and nothing has happened - the contract stands and Coke allows more horrors to occur. Students have held protests, candlelight vigils, wrote editorials in the school newspaper, handed out informational fliers, made presentations to the student body and administrators alike - all to no avail.
Administrators refuse to listen to the demands of the university community. Coca-Cola is one of the world's most powerful and profitable corporations. In 2002, Coca-Cola earned nearly $4 billion in profits, enough to pay its Chairman, Douglas Daft, $105 million in compensation. Yet, despite repeated pleas for justice, Coca-Cola has not found the time or resources to offer safety to the workers who bottle its products or prevent massive environmental devastation in the communities where it does business.
Death Squads in Colombia:
Colombia has long been the most dangerous country in the world to organize a union. Since 1986, roughly 4000 Colombian trade unionists have been murdered. In 2000, three of every five trade unionists killed in the world were Colombian. The vast majority of these murders have been carried out by right-wing paramilitary groups (aka death squads) on an ideological mission to destroy the labor movement. These groups often work in collaboration with the official US-supported Colombian military, and in some instances with managers at plants producing for multinational corporations.
In the case of Coca-Cola, according to numerous credible reports, the company and its business partners have turned a blind eye to, financially supported, and actively colluded with paramilitary groups in efforts to destroy workers' attempts to organize unions and bargain collectively. -Since 1989, eight union leaders from Coca-Cola plants have been murdered by paramilitary forces. Dozens of other workers have been intimidated, kidnapped, or tortured.
-In Carepa, members of the paramilitary murdered union leader Isidro Gil in broad daylight inside his factory's gates. They returned the next day and forced all of the plant's workers to resign from their union by signing documents on Coca-Cola letterhead.
-Another murder attempt occurred on August 22, 2003, when two men riding motorcycles fired shots at Juan Carlos Galvis, a worker leader at Coca-Cola's Barrancabermeja plant.
-There is substantial evidence that managers of several bottling plants have ordered assaults to occur and made regular payments to leaders of the paramilitary groups carrying out the attacks. These ongoing abuses have taken their toll on Coca-Cola workers' efforts to organize. Their union, SINALTRAINAL, has suffered a dramatic loss in membership, as worker leaders are intimidated or forced into hiding. SINALTRAINAL has appealed for solidarity and allies in the US labor and social justice movements have answered their call.
The United Steelworkers and the International Labor Rights Fund have filed a lawsuit against Coca-Cola on behalf of the union and victims' families in a US federal court. Other unions including the Teamsters and many community groups have launched public campaigns targeting Coke. If history is a guide, students could be the force that finally moves Coke to stop denying responsibility and take action to protect its workers' lives. Minneapolis, MN- Baristas from the Starbucks Coffee located at the intersection of Nicollet and Franklin Avenues in Minneapolis walked off the floor Wednesday morning to present a petition to management, signed by more than 500 concerned customers and community members, demanding Starbucks hire a security guard to ensure the safety of its patrons and partners. The workers in turn declared their affiliation with the Starbucks Workers Union, a campaign of the Industrial Workers of the World labor union, becoming the first Starbucks in Minneapolis, and the second in Minnesota, to go union.

A press conference will be held Thursday, November 13, at 11 am, in front of the Franklin and Nicollet Starbucks to celebrate the solidarity of the workers and demand that Starbucks hire a security guard.

Initially, the store partners circulated an internal petition, compiling signatures from most of the store's employees, requesting a meeting to discuss the security situation. After receiving no productive response from either the store or district manager, the employees turned to the
customers to prove their point.

"We hoped management would recognize the need to discuss these concerns with us, but when they refused to even hold a meeting, we knew more action was needed," said Aaron Kocher, a current store employee. "We can't work when we are constantly being harassed, threatened, and intimidated, or trying to protect our customers from the same mistreatment," he said.

Nancy Athanasselis, a regular customer known to everyone at the store, was gratified to see someone finally doing something about the problem. "The baristas are very busy running the store. It shouldn't be up to them to take care of security problems, but that is what ends up
happening. If Starbucks is not going to look at the human aspect, they should at least look at how much time they spend dealing with security," she said.

Since the beginning of 2008, there have been more than 500 police reports filed for the immediate area surrounding Starbucks. On August 3, the McDonald's restaurant located two blocks south of Starbucks was held up at gun point. On November 3, the Money Xchange less than one block from Starbucks was robbed at knife-point at 8:30 in the morning.

Christa worked for Starbucks for three years, but she was forced to choose between self-preservation and her position: "I loved the people I worked with, but there were problems. I can't tell you how many times we had to clean up feces, urine, blood, or vomit from customers who came in drunk. One time a guy didn't want to pay an extra four cents for his coffee. He started screaming at me. He came back later with a friend and started photographing me, saying, 'That's the one. I'm going to kill her.' I'm not going to risk my life for $8.50 an hour."
The customers and baristas at the Franklin and Nicollet Starbucks create a dynamic, diverse community in a changing neighborhood. The security conditions at Franklin and Nicollet have made performing the essential job duties nearly impossible. It is unacceptable for Starbucks to ignore the demands of its customers and workers. It is unconscionable for Starbucks to continue endangering their lives.

In solidarity with the workers of all Starbucks locations, the Starbucks Workers Union and Industrial Workers of the World will continue to support Starbucks employees everywhere in their efforts to create a positive, respectful work environment. The IWW will soon announce a day of action for "Black Friday," November 28, 2008, the busiest shopping day of the year, to call attention to one of the workers' core demands, a cost of living pay increase for all Starbucks baristas. Background on the Starbucks Workers Union.

The IWW Starbucks Workers Union is a grassroots organization of over 200 current and former employees of the world's largest coffee chain united for secure hours and a living wage. The Union has members throughout the United States fighting for systemic change in the company and remedying individual grievances with management. The SWU has been
especially active in New York City, Chicago, Grand Rapids, and Minneapolis.

HUMAN RIGHTS-EUROPE/LIBYA:
PETITION AGAINST MIGRANT DETENTION CAMPS:
The following is for our European readers.the pseudo-socialist regime of Libya has long held intercepted African emigrants trying to make their way to Europe in hellish conditions, both for reasons of their own racism and to curry favour with European governments of a similar flavour. The following from the Fortress Europe site asks you to petition to end this atrocity.

In light of this emergency to rapidly send an international humanitarian mission to Libya to verify the conditions of detainees in the prisons and the detention centres for foreigners.

AMERICAN LABOUR:
THE TERMINATOR HASN'T COME TO END THIS SITUATION:
The following is an appeal from the United Farm Workers about a continuing situation in Conan's Kingdom of California. Read it and see how the families of farm workers in that State are put at risk by the continued failure of the state government to act. Sign the petition demanding clean water for farm worker families.
.........................
Farm worker families put at risk while Governor Schwarzenegger's bureaucrats ignore the situation:
Back in early September we told you about the approximately 200 farm workers and their families who live in government housing in Los Banos CA, who don’t have access to safe drinking water. Their current water supply is contaminated with arsenic, copper and radionucleotides.

The Department of Fish and Game has a pipeline that could immediately provide safe water to these families, but they refuse to allow these families to use it.

More than 5,000 activists like you responded by contacting these bureaucrats, telling them to allow the community to connect to the city water supply. On Sept 11, Fish and Game responded they would commit to immediately start making the connection. However, nothing has happened.

Fish and Game is again inventing political roadblocks to stall the process.

These families continue to be put at risk by having no alternative but to use the contaminated water. Families do get a ration of bottled water. However, the amount is not enough to have clean water for household chores and practice good hygiene.

This toxic situation has to end. The migrant housing center is in the process of closing for the season, marking three years that the health of these farm worker families has been ignored by Gov. Schwarzenegger’s administration.

Sign the online petition today and tell the Governor that we won’t stand for this anymore. The Governor needs to tell his Department of Fish and Game to be a good neighbor and stop forcing kids and their families to use contaminated water. Ask him to assure the public and the farm workers that there will finally be safe water for the residents when this migrant camp opens for the season again in April 2009. Worker representatives will hand in this petition to the Governor’s office on December 1, right after the Thanksgiving holidays.

The Petition
Send this petition to:
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
cc: Department of Fish and Game
Governor,
It's time for action.
Two hundred farm workers and their families who live in government housing in Los Banos don't have access to safe drinking water. Your administration's Department of Fish and Game has a pipeline that could immediately provide safe water to these families, but they refuse to allow these families to use it.
Fish and Game has promised to take action on this situation. However, for the past three years nothing has happened, and families continue to be put at risk as they have no alternative but to use the contaminated water with its unacceptable amounts of arsenic, copper and radionuclide. The migrant housing center is in the process of closing for the season, marking three years that the health of these farm worker families has been ignored by your administration. .
The residents of the Rafael L. Silva Migrant Family Housing Center in Los Banos, the Housing Authority, and Merced County have been acting on good faith for the last three years. They have taken numerous measures to appease Fish and Game's concerns. They were told their efforts would result in safe drinking water for the residents of the Los Banos Migrant Camp.
However, for every step advocates took in the direction of solving the problem, the Department of Fish and Game took a step backwards and found another stumbling block.
Drinking bottled water only solves half the problem--given that arsenic, copper, and radionucleotides are actually absorbed into the skin when bathing. Children accidentally drink the water when bathing and at times drink the water when they are thirsty.
It is crucial that the residents have access to safe drinking water. In fact, it's a human right.
We the undersigned call upon you to make your Department of Fish and Game quit putting up political roadblocks and allow the Los Banos Migrant Camp to connect to their existing water line that receives City of Los Banos water.
Please get back to me and assure me that there will finally be safe water for the residents when this migrant camp opens for the season again in April 2009.

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT:
ANARCHIST COMMUNISTS ON THE ECONOMIC CRISIS:
Here from the Anarkismo site is a statement from several of the international anarchist communist organizations. Molly has to point out that she doesn't agree with the "cause" of the present crisis as it is presented here. That may be understandable. Most academic economists not only failed to predict the crisis; they are also only now scrambling to explain it. the cause is one thing. the response is another. The following is valuable in terms of response.

Anarchist Communist Statement On The Global Economic Crisis And G20 Meeting:
Sunday November 16, 2008 21:36 by Anarkismo Editorial Group

International anarchist communist statement on the global economic crisis and G20 meeting, endorsed by Alternative Libertaire (France), Federazione dei Comunisti Anarchici (Italy), Melbourne Anarchist Communist Group (Australia) and Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Front (South Africa).

Anarchist Communist Statement On The Global Economic Crisis And G20 Meeting
1.The current crisis is typical of the crises that regularly appear in the capitalist economy. "Overproduction", speculation and subsequent collapse are inherent to the system. (As Alexander Berkman and others have pointed out, what capitalist economists call overproduction is actually underconsumption: capitalism prevents large numbers of people from fulfilling their needs, and so undermines its own markets.)
2.Any solution to the crisis prepared by capitalists and governments will remain a solution within capitalism. It will not be a solution for the popular classes. Indeed, as in every crisis, the workers and the poor are paying – while financial capital is being bailed out with huge sums. This is likely to continue. No change within capitalism can resolve the problems of the popular classes; still less can such a solution be expected from individual politicians, such as Barack Obama. The most such politicians can do is play a part in offering the capitalists a way out, and perhaps in throwing the working class some crumbs.
3.The bank bailouts show not only whose interests the state serves, but the hollowness of capitalist commitment to free markets. Throughout history, capitalists have stood for markets when it suits them, and state regulation and subsidies when they need it. Capitalism could never have existed without state support.
4.In the US, the UK and elsewhere, the bailouts have taken the form of nationalisation of troubled financial institutions – with the full support of capital. This shows that capitalists have no fundamental problem with state ownership, and that nationalisation has nothing to do with socialism. It can also be a method of screwing the working class. We ourselves, not the state, need to take control of the economy.
5.Owing to the globalisation of capital under neo-liberalism, the ruling class recognises that the solution must be global. The G20 is meeting from 15 November to discuss the crisis. This is significant. The rulers of the US, Europe and Japan are coming to realise that they cannot handle the crisis on their own; that they need, not only one another, but other powers, notably China (which is emerging as a top industrial producer, and is on its way to becoming the world's third-biggest economy). India, Brazil and other "emerging" economies will have seats at the table. This may mark a recognition – under discussion for some years – that the G8 alone are no longer the world's economic decision makers. It is likely to signal a shift in the running of the global economic system.
6.We place no hopes in the inclusion of new capitalist powers. China's rulers may claim to be socialist; others, such as Lula of Brazil and Motlanthe of South Africa, may present themselves at times as champions of the poor. But in fact, all are defenders of capitalism, exploiters and oppressors of the people of their own countries, and, increasingly, imperialist or sub-imperialist exploiters of the people of other countries.
7.If the crisis is to lead to anything other than complete defeat for the global popular classes, poverty, exploitation and war, the popular classes must mobilise. We must demand bailouts, not for the capitalists, but for us. We anarchist communists will fight for those who got homes on subprime mortgages to be bailed out and keep their homes. We will continue to engage in and support struggles for jobs with better wages and shorter hours, housing, services, health services, welfare and education, protection of the environment. We fight for an end to imperialist wars and to repression of our class and its struggles.
8.We present these demands in response to the G20 meeting, and will continue to present them in the future. Through such demands, and through direct action to bring them about, we will work towards building a global movement of the popular classes that can put an end to capitalism, the state and the crises they create.

Alternative Libertaire (France)

AMERICAN POLITICS:
HOWARD ZINN ON THE OBAMA VICTORY:
Here's yet another libertarian comment on the Barack Obama victory down USA way, this time from the homepage of libertarian socialist historian Howard Zinn. The essay below was originally published in the French newspaper L'Humanité.

Howard Zinn article written for l'Humanité
OBAMA’S HISTORIC VICTORY:
by Howard Zinn
Those of us on the Left who have criticized Obama, as I have, for his failure to take bold positions on the war and on the economy, must join the exultation of those Americans, black and white, who shouted and wept Tuesday night as they were informed that Barack Obama had won the presidential election. It is truly a historic moment, that a black man will lead our country. The enthusiasm of the young, black and white, the hopes of their elders, cannot simply be ignored.

There was a similar moment a century and a half ago, in the year 1860, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Lincoln had been criticized harshly by the abolitionists, the anti-slavery movement, for his failure to take a clear, bold stand against slavery, for acting as a shrewd politician rather than a moral force. But when he was elected, the abolitionist leader Wendell Phillips, who had been an angry critic of Lincoln’s cautiousness, recognized the possibility in his election.

Phillips wrote that for the first time in the nation’s history “the slave has chosen a President of the United States.” Lincoln, he said, was not an abolitionist, but he in some way “consents to represent an antislavery position.” Like a pawn on the chessboard, Lincoln had the potential, if the American people acted vigorously, to be moved across the board, converted into a queen, and, as Phillips said, “sweep the board.”

Obama, like Lincoln, tends to look first at his political fortunes instead of making his decisions on moral grounds. But, as the first African American in the White House, elected by an enthusiastic citizenry which expects a decisive move towards peace and social justice, he presents a possibility for important change.

Obama becomes president in a situation which cries out for such change. The nation has been engaged in two futile and immoral wars, in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the American people have turned decisively against those wars. The economy is shaken by tremendous blows, and is in danger of collapsing, as families lose their homes and working people, including those in the middle class, lose their jobs, So the population is ready for change, indeed, desperate for change, and “change” was the word most used by Obama in his campaign.

What kind of change is needed? First, to announce the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, and to renounce the Bush doctrine of preventive war as well as the Carter doctrine of military action to control Mideast oil. He needs to radically change the direction of U.S. foreign policy, declare that the U.S. is a peace loving country which will not intervene militarily in other parts of the world, and start dismantling the military bases we have in over a hundred countries. Also he must begin meeting with Medvedev, the Russian leader, to reach agreement on the dismantling of the nuclear arsenals, in keeping with the Nuclear Anti-Proliferation Treaty.

This turn-around from militarism will free hundreds of billions of dollars. A tax program which will sharply increase taxes on the richest 1% of the nation, and will tax their wealth as well as their income, will yield more hundreds of billions of dollars.

With all that saved money, the government will be able to give free health care to everyone, put millions of people to work (which the so-called free market has not been able to do). In short, emulate the New Deal program, in which millions were given jobs by the government. This is just an outline of a program which could transform the United States and make it a good neighbor to the world.
