UPCOMING BENEFIT SHOWS - FT. LAUDERDALE and PITTSBURGH

Tomorrow afternoon (well, today if you're reading this on Sunday...) some of the finest of Florida's musicians as well as some superb touring musicians will join forces in Ft. Lauderdale at the legendary Labyrinth Cafe in a benefit for my "paid sick days" fund. It's so overwhelming and very touching to see musicians coming together for me. If you have friends near either one of these cities, please spread the word.

Sunday, December 5, 2010
2:00 p.m.
Anne Feeney Benefit Concert
Labyrinth Café
UU Church of Ft. Lauderdale, 3970 NW 21st Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33309
http://www.labyrinthcafe.com/Cosponsored.html

Anne Feeney has been a force to be reckoned with for many years. She has sung out and stood up for political and social injustice in every area of her life. She has helped many people in need. Now she is fighting cancer, and we want to help her in her struggle.

Performers include: Ellen Bukstel, Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Ray Del Papa, Jennings & Keller, Rod MacDonald, Marie Nofsinger, The Raging Grannies, Joan Rose, Vicki Ryder, The Solidarity Singers, Amy Speace, Amy Carol Webb, Doug & Telisha Williams, Valerie C. Wisecracker...

For more info about Anne, you can check out her website (http://www.annefeeney.com/ ) or go to http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/annefeeney , where you can read the journal updates and/or write in her guest book - Ms. Feeney's Wild Ride indeed!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is also a raffle planned. You could win a $2000.00 handmade guitar. This guitar, handmade by S. L. Smith, with a hard case is being raffled off for Anne's benefit. There will be only 250 total tickets sold at $10.00 each. For more info about who made the guitar: http://guitars.slsmith.info/
We expect to hold the drawing during the concert on December 5. If all 250 tickets are not sold by that time, an equitable time for the drawing will be determined and the winner will be posted. Michael Stock, of WLRN's Folk and Acoustic Music Show, on Sundays from 2 - 5 PM, has kindly agreed to assist with the drawing and announcement of the winner if it does not take place at the fundraiser.
(Let me know if you're interested in a raffle ticket. If they don't sell all the tickets by tomorrow, I'm sure they'll be happy to sell one to you! email me @ anne@annefeeney.com)
PITTSBURGH, PA - SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12th - MR. SMALL'S - 2PM
You'd have to be a student of Pittsburgh musical legends to understand how completely amazing the lineup is for the December 12th show at Mr. Small's. RUSTED ROOT will be turning in a short set. Blues giant BILLY PRICE will sing. THE GRANATI BROTHERS will rock out. Justin Sane from ANTI-FLAG will add some hard edged punk to the show. Fresh from his night of performing with Bruce Springsteen, JOE GRUSHECKY AND THE HOUSE ROCKERS will dazzle us. My dear friends THE NEWLANDERS will perform, as will JACK ERDIE, BRAD YODER, TRES LADS, JOE MUNROE, SUE POWERS AND JEFF BERMAN. This concert was the brainchild of MIKE STOUT and the HUMAN UNION who will perform songs from their fabulous new CD. Many of Pittsburgh's finest side musicians (ROBBIE KLEIN, NELSON HARRISON and so many more!) will be filling out the lineup, and (I hope) joining me on stage if I feel up to it. Many many thanks to Senator Jim Ferlo for his generosity, support and guidance in the planning of this event.
There's going to be an incredible silent auction during the show with some impossible-to-find-anywhere-else items donated by local musicians and artists. All the musicians will have CDs on sale, so please come to buy some recordings too - support all our fabulous live local musicians!
Advance tickets available at http://ticketweb.com/mrsmalls or charge by phone @ 866-468-3401 and various locations around Pittsburgh.
I hope to have some photos from this for the January Fellow Travelers' Advisory.
Many many thanks to the Mother Jones Committee in Springfield, IL who dedicated their 2010 annual banquet to me. They had a silent auction before dinner and a hat pass afterward, and folks were exceedingly generous.
STRANGELY ABSENT FROM THE ELECTORAL DEBATE
You would have never guess we're still in the middle of two wars. All during the recent election campaigns there was hardly any mention of the high cost of the 2 invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. Besides the deaths often estimated over 1 million people, over $1.1 trillion or more has already been spent with no end in sight. It is estimated that it has cost the U.S. $50 million to kill each Taliban. The proposed U.S. embassy to be built in Kabul will cost $500 million. A new audit shows that the U.S. cannot account for nearly $18 billion earmarked for the Afghan occupation. (Democracy Now, 10/29/10). U.S. soldiers sent to Iraq and injured will need $600 billion for their healthcare. However, there is hardly a peep from the Tea Party, which usually vehemently complains about the overspending of tax payer money. Over 55% of federal taxes are spent by military bureaucrats and lobbyists at the Pentagon. If we cut military spending by only 1% we could completely eliminate poverty in the U.S. (Online Journal Sentinel, 11/19/10). If we used the tax money for basic human needs instead of invading and occupying countries for economic reasons we could guarantee all our citizens, not just some, education and healthcare. In other words, we could have what most Europeans already have. All we have to do is follow their example and drastically cut military spending. It would be a step in the right direction towards a more peaceful and just world. We get what we pay for. -------Don Timmerman
SOAW UPDATE
This just in from Don and Roberta: Some of the 29 people taken into custody outside Ft. Benning during the rally at the annual School of the Americas Watch Vigil on Nov. 20 in Columbus GA were undercover agents, one of whom was arrested with the others. Fr. Bill Brennan, S.J., a former Casa Maria community member, at 90 years old, was one of those arrested and later released. Good going, Bill! Fr. Louis Vilale and Davvid Omondi, both Catholic Workers, were arrested for civil disobedience or divine obedience and sentenced to 6 months in prison. -----SOA Watch Enjoying your freedom? Thank a protester!
I was so sorry to miss the gathering at the gates of SOA this year. The musical collective was in grand form, with the lovely new addition of our pal Roy Zimmerman. It's hard to say how long it will take to close this evil place, but I believe that we will. I was very pleased to hear that the musical collective sang "Have You Been to Jail for Justice?" on Saturday, and dedicated it to me.
I LOVE HEARING FROM YOU!
Please keep the cards and letters coming. I get so stir-crazy sitting at home day after day after week after month (although it sure beats being in the hospital...). I wish I felt up to more phone calls, but my energy level is VERY low. That's why I love reading your comments at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/annefeeney and getting mail from you. As soon as I feel up to it, I'm hitting the road to come and thank you all in person. That could be a while though. In the meantime, know how very much I cherish our connection and look forward to our next meeting.
SEBASTIAN
I don't know if you all will be able to see this 54 second video of my grandson, Sebastian, at home in Ecuador. (If not, trust me, he's cute. Very cute.) I'm so looking forward to having him and the rest of my family here from December 18-26th. It will be wonderful! http://sharing.theflip.com/session/b65c0d92ccb4955b65d476a038bf2729/video/31896261
WHATEVER YOU'RE CELEBRATING
I hope the coming weeks bring you plenty of days off, the light and love of family and friends, good health and that 2011 will be a wonderful healthy year for us all.
Much love
ANARCHIST MUSIC VANCOUVER:
ANNE FEENEY BENEFIT CONCERT RESCHEDULED:
Hey folks if you're out Vancouver way this weekend try and check out anarchist musician Joey Only's benefit concert for singer Anne Feeney. Here's Joey's empathic appeal.
♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪
Anne Feeney Fundraiser Date Changed=October 9th
DATE CHANGED FOR MY ANNE FEENEY FUNDRAISER!!!!
TO HELP COVER HER CANCEROUS CANCER BILLS!!
NOW SATURDAY OCTOBER 9th AT CAFE RHIZOMENEAR MAIN STREET AND BROADWAY IN VANCOUVER
8:30PM, $5-25 donation, for Anne Feeney
with Jeff Andrew, Joey Only and comrades
Howdy friends...many of you know my good friend and folk singer from Pittsburgh Painsylvania known as Anne Feeney. You ought to know her, she's been croonin songs for more than 35 years and doing it for the working class. She and I traveled around last year touring after being friends for much of the last decade and she'd never miss a chance to stop at a picket line for striking workers and sing em some songs to cheer em up...
...it was as dreary as an April hell could be when we stopped into that rainy picket outside the big steel mill in Hamilton Ontario where she lit faces up with songs against the goons and ginks and company finks. Those guys had been wanderin around in circles for weeks striking while the big bosses sez the economy's no good anymore so all these guys have to get fired so that rich pigs can stay rich pigs
...in all that time only Anne and I came to sing em some good old fashioned fighting songs and they sure did like it. Even fed us afterward. Lately she fell ill with some cancer, a big tumor in her lung nearly half a foot big? Imagine having half a cancerous foot in your lung? Down in Pittsburgh the system doesn't care if you can afford to live or not, so it's up to me and my friends to raise a few bucks to ease the burden on her lungs, brains and hearts because Obama won't do it for her. Hell, when I was sick with tuberculosis and dying she went out of her way for me
...so I would be an ungrateful bastard if I didn't do something back. All her beautiful curly Irish hair fell out and she looks sorta funny now, which is all the more reason to have pity on her and send her some money so she can pay her hospital bills or at least buy a wig...or a hat. And you know, us Irish folk are like Samson..when we're sober all our power comes from our hair!
So the date has changed from the 8th to the 9th...or maybe it didn't change and I was just wrong all a long. At any rate, I hope that wouldn't hold you back from coming out to the cafe, having some soup or beer or beer-soup and having a good old time with us there. And if we can send Anne $5 or $500 it would be something she didn't have already
...I guess I mean to say I am hoping more than one person comes cause five bucks sucks when you're in the hole ten grand! How bout it friends...let's party like it's 1999. If you want to know more about my radical folk singing comrade Anne Feeney, who Utah Philips once called the greatest labor singer in North America...go to her website and lookie for yourself. (www.annefeeney.com ). She's one of those IWW (Industrial Workers of the World types..she gave everything to everyone else and has nothing left for herself. Anyway, there's no room for sectarian crap at this event..just room to sing a few Feeney songs and have a good old time...and if you don't have any plans and you don't like hockey but decide not to come anyway, you must be a heartless capitalist pig, why else would you sit at home doing nothing but facebookin people who don't even care about you
...come out and see some real people instead. till then my friends
Currently Anne is in great need of financial help cause cancer aint cheap in America. Obviously this is very serious, Anne seems to be handling baldness quite well though!
I've had a the great fortune to spend a lot of time with Anne on the road and here in Vancouver, when I had tuberculosis she left all the money she made at our show in Vancouver behind for me before I could stop her. She has been so generous, now she needs our support and love. There aren't many like Anne out there, those who were like her had names like Utah Philips, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Joe Hill...and their contributions to the movement and folk music were all huge. For more information on Anne's condition and story go to: (http://fellow-travelers-advisory.blogspot.com/ )( www.annefeeney.com )
DAVID ROVICS IWW BENEFIT CONCERT:
Tbis is almost close enough to count as 'local news' even if it is in a different country. The Twin Cities IWW (Minneapolis/St Paul) will be sponsoring a benefit for the Industrial Workers of The World (IWW) this coming September 24. Even though Minneapolis is nothing but a "short" drive south of Winnipeg I have to admit that my experience of it is limited to a stopover at its airport when flying from one civilized country to another. Still Minneapolis is "accessible" in the same sense for Winnipegers as Brandon is. Here's the promo.
A benefit concert for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW): "The
Wobblies," in the Twin Cities.
Rovics has been traveling the world for decades now, singing his songs
of resistance, peace, and democracy for unions, peace activists, and
...social justice everywhere he travels. In the middle of his current
Prairie Fire Tour, he is performing a benefit concert for the local
branch of the Industrial Workers of the World, the most democratic
union in North America since 1905. While David travels the world
singing about corporate greed and political injustice, the IWW is
actively organizing workplaces - like Starbucks at the Mall of
missing: you.
MOLLY'S POETRY CORNER:
TULI KUPFERBERG 1923-2010:
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. All of those influences on me when I was an obnoxious young kid (instead of an obnoxious old fart) are passing away into the great beyond faster than you can say "geezer". Shortly after my brief piece on Harvey Pekar Larry Gambone of the Porkupine Blog commented that Tuli Kupferberg of the Fugs died two days ago as well. Dead at the young age of 86. Just goes to show you that all the propaganda about living a long life by living cleanly is utter horseshit.
Now most younger readers of this blog would be unacquainted with 'The Fugs'. See the two references above for further info. Basically they were an "anti-band" formed in 1964 at a transition point where the 'Beats' were influencing the developing New Left and the so-called "counterculture". Unlike Pekar Kupferberg actually defined himself as an anarchist..of the pacifist variety, but unfortunately Kuperferberg also paid little (no ?) attention to ordinary people outside of his bohemian circles other than in sexual references. Still, working within this restriction, Kupferberg was an incisive artist, and he had many great insights at the personal and moral level. That was the nature of his anarchism and he paid as little attention to class based issues as to stamp collecting.
People who missed the Fugs missed one of the great moments in popular culture. To put it briefly this was punk music with all its good and bad points while the punkers were still in diapers or even yet to swim up the cervical canal. Right down to the foul language, quite often the contribution of Kupferberg. Such gems as 'Saran Wrap' and 'Slum Goddess' may not stand the test of time as masterpieces of English literature (no f'ing kidding !), but they put their profanity at a higher level than repeating "Fuck You" over and over.
People can see some of his later interests at his You Tube site. Also here is one of his more explicitly anarchist songs.
BECAUSE THE STATE
tune: chorus of "Because the Night (Belong to Lovers)"
by Patti Smith & Bruce Springsteen
Because the state belongs to fuckers
Because the state belongs to them
Alpha primate otherfuckers
Wasps in the edenic glen
& because the state was made by fuckers
Because the state was made for them
Pleasure-hating motherfuckers
Lover-baiting sons a guns
And the state holds monopoly of force
"Cop killers" also mean "cops who kill"
& tho the idea is somewhat coarse
Wilheim Reich might hold: "That's a sexual thrill"
& because the state seducts us early
From 3 years on to postgrad docs:
Because the state educts us early
Dripdries our brains, hangs 'em out like sox
& because the state thrives with armies
Protects its properties thru blacks & blues
Soldier boys are never called "murderers"
But what the hell is what they do?
& soon no doubt when we're alone
The govt'll tape your cunt & my bone
The state is a devil disguised as God
That throws its laws like a lightening rod
& this "executive committee of the ruling class"
Shoves its media up our ass
Will the evil of two lessers set you free?
Now the question's: "To be internet or be TV?"
But because the state belongs to fuhrers
Because the state kills us for fun
Because the state belongs to furors
Because the state thinks only with the gun
& because the state belongs to fuckers
Because the state belongs to them
Gotta underthrow them motherfuckers
To return us to our edenic glen
O because the state belongs to fuckers
Because the state belongs to them
Oh we'll have to change them all to lovers
& we'll have to try & start again
Yeah we'll have to change us all to lovers
Oh we'll have to try to begin again....
OY!
Here's the obit for Kupferburg from the New York Times. A rather incisive opinion of what the Fugs were, a mixture of high culture (such as their adaption of Mathew Arnold's poem 'On Dover Beach' )and teenage sexual angst in its lowest form. Still, the mixture produced a very tasty stew. Just as an aside I've been looking up Tuli's "name change". His birth name was 'Naftali' (mentioned as the 6th son of Jacob in Genesis) which in Hebrew means "struggling". He was probably unaware when he shortened it to 'Tuli' that this form means "at peace with God' in Irish. Seems to me he should have kept the original. Here's the obit.
Tuli Kupferberg, Bohemian and Fug, Dies at 86
By BEN SISARIO
Tuli Kupferberg, a poet and singer who went from being a noted Beat to becoming, in his words, “the world’s oldest rock star” when he helped found the Fugs, the bawdy and politically pugnacious rock group, died on Monday in Manhattan. He was 86 and lived in Manhattan.
He had been in poor health since suffering two strokes last year, said Ed Sanders, his friend and fellow Fug.
The Fugs were, in the view of the longtime Village Voice critic Robert Christgau, “the Lower East Side’s first true underground band.” They were also perhaps the most puerile and yet the most literary rock group of the 1960s, with songs suitable for the locker room as well as the graduate seminar (“Ah, Sunflower, Weary of Time,” based on a poem by William Blake); all were played with a ramshackle glee that anticipated punk rock.
With songs like “Kill for Peace,” the Fugs also established themselves as aggressively antiwar, with a touch of absurdist theater. The band became “the U.S.O. of the left,” Mr. Kupferberg once said, and it played innumerable peace rallies, including the “exorcism” of the Pentagon in 1967 that Norman Mailer chronicled in his book “The Armies of the Night.” (The band took its name from a usage in Mailer’s “Naked and the Dead.”)
The Fugs was formed in 1964 in Mr. Sanders’s Peace Eye Bookstore, a former kosher meat store on East 10th Street in Manhattan. By then Mr. Kupferberg, already in his 40s, was something of a Beatnik celebrity. He was an anthologized poet and had published underground literary magazines with titles like Birth and Yeah.
He had also found notoriety as the inspiration for a character in Allen Ginsberg’s poem “Howl.” As Ginsberg and Mr. Kupferberg acknowledged, he was the one who “jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge this actually happened and walked away unknown and forgotten,” a reference to a 1945 suicide attempt (off the Manhattan Bridge, not Brooklyn) that had been precipitated by what he called a nervous breakdown.
The fame that episode earned him caused Mr. Kupferberg a lifetime of chagrin and embarrassment. “Throughout the years,” he later said, “I have been annoyed many times by, ‘Oh, did you really jump off the Brooklyn Bridge?,’ as if it was a great accomplishment.”
The Fugs’ first album, “The Village Fugs Sing Ballads of Contemporary Protest, Points of View and General Dissatisfaction,” was released in 1965. The band became a staple of underground galleries and theaters, as well as antiwar rallies. In concert Mr. Kupferberg was often the group’s mascot or harlequin, acting out satirical pantomimes — an American soldier who turns into a Nazi, for example — or sometimes not singing at all.
On subsequent albums the band changed its lineup many times and acquired a more professional sound, though its scatological themes got it kicked off at least one major record label.
With his bushy beard and wild hair, Mr. Kupferberg embodied the hippie aesthetic. But the term he preferred was bohemian, which to him signified a commitment to art as well as a rejection of restrictive bourgeois values, and as a scholar of the counterculture he traced the term back to an early use by students at the University of Paris. Among his books were “1,001 Ways to Live Without Working” — and for decades he was a frequent sight in Lower Manhattan, selling his cartoons on the street and serving as a grandfather figure for generations of nonconformists.
Beneath Mr. Kupferberg’s antics, however, was a keen poetic and musical intelligence that drew on his Jewish and Eastern European roots. He specialized in what he called “parasongs,” which adapted and sometimes satirized old songs with new words. And some of his Fugs songs, like the gentle “Morning, Morning,” had their origins in Jewish religious melodies.
Naphtali Kupferberg was born in New York on Sept. 28, 1923. He grew up on the Lower East Side and became a jazz fan and leftist activist while still a teenager. He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1944 and got a job as a medical librarian.
“I had intended to be a doctor at one point, like any good Jewish boy,” he recalled to Mr. Sanders in an audio interview in 2003. Instead he began to write topical poems and humor pieces, contributing to The Village Voice and other publications.
After the Fugs broke up, in 1969, Mr. Kupferberg performed with two groups, the Revolting Theater and the Fuxxons, and continued writing. The Fugs reunited periodically, first in 1984. Recently, Mr. Sanders said, Mr. Kupferberg had completed his parts for a new album, “Be Free: The Fugs Final CD (Part Two),” and had also been posting ribald “perverbs” — brief videos punning on well-known aphorisms — on YouTube.
Mr. Kupferberg is survived by his wife, Sylvia Topp; three children, Joseph Sacks, Noah Kupferberg and Samara Kupferberg; and three grandchildren.
One can only hope that Tuli is right now getting together with Lenny Bruce in heaven to put together some comedy routine to mock the pomposity of the Almighty. As Kupferberg believed nothing but nothing should be taken too seriously. Case in point...here's one of my Fugs favourites...the 'Nothing Song'.
...THE STORY...
Joey Only and his gang of rebel outlaws are hitting the road again this year to promote a brand new record, Transgression Trail. The album is already getting radio airplay and is by far the best thing Joey Only has accomplished. The album features 12 new originals all uniquely northern, this record is a testament to the thousands of miles he has logged playing shows. The album is available in stores across Canada through Scratch Records.
The Outlaw Band is at its peak, they are putting on a psychedelic show unlike any other folk-country band. The Outlaws are putting on relentless shows refusing to stop for set breaks, playing all night long until the venue is whipped up into an alcohol fueled frenzy. The Outlaws aim to outplay every country band in Canada.
The Outlaws will be on the mainstage of festivals such as Under the Volcano, Winlaw Music Fest, Music on the Mountain Fest, Morfree Mountain Music Fest, Artswells Festival and they look forward to meeting Buffy St.Marie at the Brandon Folk Fest. They are opening for Fred Eaglesmith a bunch of times and American recording artist Austin Lucas. They will be seen at Neskonlith Reserve prior to the PowWow and Kumsheen Rafting Adventures with opening act Gerry Hannah of the Subhumans.
The Outlaws are proving to everyone that they have what it takes to move up in the world, leaving naysayers in the dust.
