Q-Team - speaking on: Queers Coming Out Against Israeli Apartheid

Uri Gordon - Speaking on Anarchists Against the Wall and the Joint Struggle in Israel/Palestine (http://www.awalls.org/)

Anarchists Against the Wall is an Israeli action group supporting the popular Palestinian struggle against segregation and land confiscation in the West Bank. Uri Gordon, a participant in the group and author of the book “Anarchy Alive!”, will discuss the group’s activities and examine the achievements and limitations of the joint struggle, as well as anarchist perspectives on national liberation and the future of Palestine/Israel.

-->About "Anarchy Alive" (http://www.anarchyalive.com/)

Anarchist politics are at the heart of today’s most vibrant and radical social movements. From squatted social centres and community gardens to acts of sabotage and raucous summit blockades, anarchist groups and networks are spreading an ethos of direct action, non-hierarchical organizing and self-liberation that has redefined revolutionary struggle for the 21st century.

Anarchy Alive! is a fascinating, in-depth look at the practice and theory of contemporary anarchism. Uri Gordon draws on seven years of activist experience and on interviews, discussions and a vast selection of recent literature to explore the activities, cultures and agendas shaping today’s explosive anti-authoritarian revival.

Anarchy Alive! Also addresses some of the most tense debates in the contemporary movement, using a theory based on practice to provocatively reshape anarchist discussions of leadership, violence, technology and nationalism.

This is the ideal book for anyone looking for a fresh, informed and critical engagement with anarchism, as a mature and dynamic political force in the age of globalisation.
-->About Uri Gordon

Uri Gordon is an Israeli anarchist theorist and activist. He is a lecturer at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Ketura, Israel. One of several anarchist theorists to come of age during the anti-globalization movement at the turn of the twenty-first century, he has worked with anarchist and radical movements including Indymedia, Peoples' Global Action, and Anarchists Against the Wall. Active primarily in Britain and his native Israel, Gordon has participated in protests at international summits across Europe.
-->About Q-Team (http://www.qteam.org/)

In a climate of corporatized gay agendas and whitewashed homogeneity among queers, Q-Team strives to provide an alternative space and vision through exciting programming and engaged political action. Q-Team collectively organizes to foster radical, anti-racist, anti-capitalist queer politics. Q-Team recently organized a contingent in the Montreal pride parade under the banner "Queers Come Out Against Israeli Apartheid". A member of Q-Team will be talking about anti-authoritarian, queer solidarity with Palestine.

--->À propos de "Anarchy Alive!"(http://www.anarchyalive.com/)

--->À propos de Uri Gordon

--->À propos de Q-TEAM

MOLLY NOTE

Molly has not read the above book yet, though I have read several reviews. The reviews haven't given me much hope that it is worthwhile, but I have to admit that the reviewers have all had their own axes to grind. the part that I object to, from the reviews that I have read is not the descriptive part of the actions of the Israeli 'Anarchists Against the Wall'. I very much admire them, even though I have certain reservations about how much anarchists today tend to gloss over the less savoury aspects of the local opposition to Israeli imperialism. At the same time I hope , with a certain amount of scepticism, that the general line of the AAtW can capture the admiration of both Israelis and Palestinians.

My own objection is to what I have read in the reviews about some great historical gulf between some so-called "new anarchism" and a so-called "old anarchism", or, to put it another way between "Big A" and "Little A" anarchists. No doubt this has a certain grain of "truth", but, taking the long perspective, it has only been in countries where there has not been a mass anarcho-syndicalist presence that this has not always been true. Even in some countries such as France where there has been such a presence in the past this observation held true even at the height of the influence of the French CGT before it became a communist tool.

Speaking of 'CGTs' it is also a simple fact today that the membership (60,000 to 100,000) and the sympathizers (2 million who voted for them in Spanish union elections) of the Spanish CGT today outnumber all the other members of 'anarchist coalitions' and their sympathizers in all countries combined by a factor of 10. The anarcho-syndicalism of the Spanish CGT is, of course, very much 'Big A', and it is also very much 'old anarchism'.

Here is where historical perspective comes into play. Anarchism has always been divided between the 'Big A" and the "Little A" in most countries for most of the last 150 years. If the blurb above is accurate, which I doubt it is, comrade Gordon has been an anarchist for all of seven years. In my more than 35 years as an anarchist I have observed a few things that he has obviously not yet assimilated. One is that the idea that anarchism should be nothing but a collection of issue oriented campaigns is far older than comrade Gordon is. There is nothing new about it. As for those who claim that anarchism should have no organization, I've been fighting them for all of those years, and others in the times of our great,great, great grandfathers were fighting them in their time. The question is not new. It's ancient. in each generation supporters of one trend or the other try to claim the label of "new".

A great number of the ideologues (mostly American) from whom this idea takes it modern wings are older than I am. Some are old enough to have been dead and buried for some years now. On the other hand most (all ???) of the supporters of the 'new syndicalism' and 'platformism' in various countries are much younger than I am. A balanced account of any 'new anarchism' should take account of the growth of this trend as well.

Then there is the ultimate in balance. If you want to divide the "anarcho-world" into 'new As' and 'old As' then you have to take into account (unless you are biased towards the 'fashion' of 'militant protest') the way that libertarian ideas have penetrated into the ordinary population, both in terms of personal liberty (individualist), community politics (anarcho-communist) and self-management (syndicalist). This outweighs the visible manifestations of protest by the 'new anarchists' by much more than a factor of 10. Even most left-socialist parties and regimes have to cast their aspirations in libertarian terms these days to gain public support. The history of this far greater "Little A" tendency has yet to be written.

As i said, I haven't read the book, and I hope that the author is not the sort of ideologue that the reviews make him out to be. There is a great amount to celebrate in the self-organization of the new protest movements, and their minor attempts at alternatives, that comprise what has been called the 'new anarchism'. Anyone, however, who cannot see its limitations is probably willfully blind. In its present form it is not a movement towards anarchism, and in its more spectacular protest oriented forms its is not even a movement towards a slightly freer society. When it adopts taking psychpathology into politics via terrorist actions it is a movement away from a free society. No amount of Jesuitical causistics will make it otherwise.

Description
Call For Papers, Presentations, Panels!!
The 1st North American Anarchist Studies Network Conference
Association Nord-Américain des Etudes Anarchistes
Asociación Norteamericana de Estudios Anarquistas
When:
November 21st and 22nd, 2009
Where:
Hartford, Connecticut USA: at Charter Oak Cultural Center (21 Charter Oak Ave.)
We are pleased to announce the beginning of the North American Anarchist Studies Network (NAASN). We see this as a space to develop theoretical and empirical work that pays critical attention to anarchism and items of interest to the anarchist milieu. Likewise, we see the creation of this network as a way for North American anarchists who do scholarly work to be able to support each other in our endeavors and create a space for critical dialogue and reflection.
This conference, then, is not only a place for us to discuss our research, dialogue with one another in panels, and educate ourselves through presentations. It is also a place for discussing the development and future course of the NAASN–so if you would like to be involved, please do so! As well, this provides us with a venue for discussing the role of the theoretician and the researcher in the larger project of dismantling capitalism, the state, and domination in all of its forms.
We are calling for papers, panels, and presentations to be given at the founding conference. Creativity in format and presentation is encouraged, as are submissions from people who may not currently have a university affiliation. As anarchists, we want to disrupt rather than perpetuate the lines drawn between the official academy and the production of knowledge. Papers, panels, and presentations should focus on work on anarchism or topics of interest to the anarchist milieu. Importantly, we see this as an occasion for dialoguing with one another to learn and grow, and would like to avoid sectarianism, personal attacks, and debating-to-win.
Please send proposals and/or abstracts with a brief bio to the conference organizers: Jesse Cohn, Luis Fernandez, Nathan Jun, Deric Shannon, and Abbey Willis at anarchiststudies@hotmail.com . Please keep descriptions and/or abstracts under 500 words. All proposals and abstracts are due by October 10, 2009. Likewise, vendors and organizations may email us at the above address to arrange for table space.
For a new world, free of institutionalized coercion and control! And for a present living and organizing in ways that embody that future as best we can!

MOLLY NOTE:
If the uninformed (like me) reader of the above is rather puzzled about the connections to other such anarchist events and organizations...welcome to the club. This much I can tell you. This event has no connection to the upcoming 'Reimaging Society' conference which is an entirely Z Communications sponsored meeting. As to the connection with the British Anarchist Studies Network and the now-cancelled 'Renewing the Anarchist Tradition' conference previously slated for next October and being sponsored by the Institute for Anarchist Studies your guess is as good as mine. I have to say that, as I tried to track this down, I felt one of those massive headaches that are an occupational hazard for anyone trying to track the "political differences" amongst anarchist groups in France or Trotskyist groups anywhere in the world coming on. I'm only going to go so far in this sort of search. Whether the new North American Anarchist Studies Network is a reinvention of the Institute for Anarchist Studies as an attempt at renewal or a bizarre expression of the petty nature of internal academic "politics" where personal differences are everything and actual program is less than nothing is beyond me. Perhaps others could enlighten me.

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHIST MOVEMENT:
INSTITUTE FOR ANARCHIST STUDIES-WEBSITE RELAUNCH:
The following has been all over the 'anarcho-net', but I have selected the version from the Anarkismo site to reprint here. To be honest, as I checked my links section I found that I was unaware that the IAS site was ever dead and in need of a relaunch. That's fine. That's fine. That's fine. It was probably about two months ago that I did that editing sweep. I wish them well, even if I have my own ideas of what anarchist intellectuals should be doing that may not coincide with the trashy post modernism and left over leftism that I suspect far too many anarchists imbibe in today's academy. I would be pleased as punch, for instance, to see real anarchist economics done in academia (outside of the Parecon people) or for real anarchist sociology and psychology, informed by evolutionary biology, to similarly be done. I personally think it is great that anarchism has now established an "academic presence". It wasn't so when I first became an anarchist all those decades ago. But still, there is a difference between an "anarchist intellectual" and an "useful anarchist intellectual", and the academics don't necessarily have the best grasp on reality. But that connection may be too much to hope for, but time will tell. Anyways, the announcement....

Announcing the Institute for Anarchist Studies Web Site!:
by Cindy Milstein - Institute for Anarchist Studies
Newly Relaunched for May Day!
Dear Friends and Comrades,
The Institute for Anarchist Studies (IAS) has newly relaunched its Web site, now available at http://www.anarchist-studies.org/.

While a few of the features of this site are still under construction, we felt it necessary to make our public face known again. And what more appropriate day to bring our Web site into existence than May 1, International Workers' Day (or May Day if you will)? Expect all of the features to be updated shortly as the site reaches full fruition.
The IAS has undergone many changes, including a reconstituted board with new members who bring new energy to the project, alongside our longtime committed members who continue to provide guidance.
We will be publishing our journal Perspectives periodically on this site, and we will be starting with a series of articles on the late but brilliant Murray Bookchin written shortly after his passing.
We hope you will continue to follow the IAS through our Web site, bring members of our speakers bureau to your school or community, and consider a donation. Even just $5 a month will go a long ways toward funding future projects and continuing quality antiauthoritarian scholarship. We thank you for your support during the site rebuilding and encourage you to please continue to submit requests for funding. We hope you will also continue to support us in the future.
In solidarity,
The Board of the Institute for Anarchist Studies

ANARCHIST CONFERENCES:
CONFERENCE ON MARXISM AND ANARCHISM:
Here's a little bit of an early bird call for those of you who are academics or academics-at-heart. Next September the Institute for Anarchist Studies in Britain will be holding a conference on 'Anarchism and Marxism'. Molly has to say that she has little interest in such things. Her opinions on the matter have only changed since the 1970s insofar as Marxism is no longer anything like a serious contender for power as it was then and is now very much a joke or an antiquarian curiosity. But I'll hold myself back for now before I travel down the road of lengthy denunciations of something that becomes more like the Flat Earth Society every day.. Here's the callout.
..............................

Conference On Marxism and Anarchism:
Is Black and Red Dead?
- Conference, University of Nottingham, 7-8/09/09
CALL FOR PAPERS - PLEASE CIRCULATE
APPEL A CONTRIBUTIONS - PRIERE DE FAIRE CIRCULER
An academic conference organized and supported by the PSA Anarchist Studies Network, the PSA Marxism Specialist Group, Anarchist Studies, Capital & Class, Critique-Journal of Socialist Theory and Historical Materialism.(I can't help it. Here comes my hairball...gack,gack,gack- Molly)
Hosted By:
The Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice
University of Nottingham
__________
What is the political relevance of the ideological labels "anarchist" and "Marxist" in the contemporary geo-political climate? Despite recurrent crisis, the costs typically borne by the people, neoliberal capitalism continues to colonize the globe in a never-ending quest for profit and new enclosures. Meanwhile, an effective political response from the left to the wars, ecological destruction, financial collapse and social problems created by capital and state has so far failed to garner the widespread support and influence it needs. Indeed, the sectarianism of the left may well have contributed to this failure.(or maybe mindless sympathy and refusal to criticize anything that is fashionably "left" has ??????-Molly)
Still, despite fracture, there have always been borrowings across the left. Most recently, post-'68 radicalisms have contributed to a blurring of the divisions between the anarchist and Marxist traditions. Traditionally regarded as hostile and irreconcilable, many of these ideas find expression in the "newest social movements", taking inspiration from the Situationists, left communists, and social anarchist traditions. The anti-statist, libertarian currents within the socialist movement have repeatedly emerged during periods of acute political and economic crisis, from the council communists to revolutionary anarchism. Is this one such historical juncture in which dynamic reconciliation is not only welcomed but vital?
To rephrase the question, what can we learn from 150 years of anti-statist, anti-capitalist social movements, and how might this history inform the formulation of a new social and political current, consciously combining the insights of plural currents of anarchism and Marxism in novel historical junctures? Indeed, to what extent have these traditional fault lines been constitutive of the political imagination? The modern feminist, queer, ecological, anti-racist and postcolonial struggles have all been inspired by and developed out of critiques of the traditional parameters of the old debates, and many preceded them. So, to what extent do capital and the state remain the key sites of struggle?
We welcome papers that engage critically with both the anarchist and the Marxist traditions in a spirit of reconciliation. We welcome historical papers that deal with themes and concepts, movements or individuals. We also welcome theoretical papers with demonstrable historical or political importance. Our criteria for the acceptance of papers will be mutual respect, the usual critical scholarly standards and demonstrable engagement with both traditions of thought.

ANARCHIST MOVEMENT:
ANARCHIST STUDIES NETWORK CONFERENCE:
The Institute For Anarchist Studies will be holding a conference next September 4th-6th at the Department of Politics, IR , and European Studies at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom. They have issued a call for papers. If you are interested in contributing to the panels please send an email to Laurence Davis at Idavis@o0ceanfree.net by March 26th, 2008 including a paper title, 200-300 word proposal and contact details of all contributors, indicating after each name whether participation has been confirmed. Informal inquiries about alternative panel or workshop arrangements are very welcome.
The theme of this conference will be "Re-Imagining Revolution", and it will focus on how the concept of "revolution" has to change given the present day realities. From the traditional Marxist (and others) idea of a violent seizure of state power to something more modern, including "the conception of revolution as a process unfolding over time rather than a singular cataclysmic event" . See the IAS homepage for more details.
Molly has to interject here. Molly is far from being "anti-intellectual". Yet some of the speakers mentioned give me pause. "From Bakunin to Lacan" would be one thing I would definitely avoid even if I might go to see David Graebher's 'Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology'. The latter may be considered as being of not any great use, but the former goes way beyond "useless" into the territory where bullshit, post-modernist bullshit in this case, is glorified, lauded and encouraged. All of this points towards what I consider a considerable lack in the growing field of "anarchist academia". As the acolytes of Maoism and other forms of Stalinism grow older in their lives of lies a new generation of academics is coming up to replace them. Many of these take "anarchism" as a point of interest and a field of research. All very well and good. It would be hard to think of anything worse than fools who couldn't understand that their heroes such as Mao were far worse than any fascist dictator that the 20th century was disgraced by. May the "theoreticians" of Mao as a "master of dialectics" go to their well deserved obscurity and eventual graves.
My problem with all this is that academic fashion has tended to reproduce the old Marxist bullshit and repackage it as anarchist bullshit, all this in the context of an academia where lack of clarity is considered one of the supreme virtues, as if it was evidence of intelligence and profundity. I see the result of this whenever I decide to torture myself by looking at "post-leftist" and "primitivist" anarchist efforts where they regurgitate the rhetoric of their professors for their own purposes and utilize similar strategies to try and fake intelligence. Academics do little harm because people rarely listen to them, but the academic failures in the USA have indeed done harm ,though it is limited, by delaying the adoption of a more rational anarchist practice (note I don't say "praxis").
What does anarchism, a movement that is growing today, need from its academic sympathizers ? Certainly not apologetics, and this is glaringly obvious insofar as the "anarchist academics" rarely engage in criticism of a movement that desperately needs it. At their best they merely do description. At their worst they are mindless cheerleaders, especially for the "anarchism" of their youth, no matter how detached it may be from either historical anarchism or from the questions that anarchism faces today in 2008.
What does Molly think "anarchist academics" should produce to help those of us who are not such ? Well, the first and most obvious thing is that the fields in which anarchists have usually decided to work reek of ultimate uselessness. Anarchism will not be advanced by more than five people worldwide in the course of 5 years by the combined efforts of "anarchist philosophers". It will lose 5,000 whose first introduction is via post-modernist bullshit. My own interests gather around history, but I recognize that this only marginally more important than philosophy. What anarchism lacks are "anarchist economists". It is a tragedy where the situation is such that non-anarchist sympathizers such as those around Z-Communications give 10,000 times as much attention and produce 10,000 times as much argument for a "non-hierarchical" society as real anarchists do.
There is a great and unexplored continent for anarchist economics, and Molly thinks that this would be the best way that anarchist academics could contribute to the real movement outside of academia. Not just by proving that we can do what we propose, but, more importantly, give the cautionary tales. If you want to be useful that is the way to go. I can even suggest where your research interests should lie, in the field known today as "experimental economics". This form of economics, informed by the mathematics of game theory and the mindset of evolutionary biology, is rather "hot" in economics today.
No, whenever I see stuff coming out of 'Cultural Studies' supposedly bearing on anarchism it is a temptation to hit the delete button. Similarly, and very unfortunately, one has to hit said button when 'Women's Studies' comes up. That is a great tragedy. Nobody cares whether somebody wants to bullshit and say that a piece of literature means something that it obviously does not. What is sad about "Women's Studies' is how little attention academics in such departments pay to things that could advance the position of women in the "lower classes". They at least could be informative without trying to totally switch fields. No amount of bowing towards political correctness such as describing lesbian relationships amongst the women of Greenham Common Peace Camp (one of the proposed speeches at the conference mentioned) will excuse this neglect. It reeks of deliberate choice. GOD ALMIGHTY, there is still a lot of effort for feminism to fulfill its historical role. It shouldn't degenerate into this. In Molly's view feminism will come to completion under our present form of society, "managerial society", but there is still a long way to go. The goal is economic equality, and the means are open to choice. The faster this question is "solved" the sooner questions of hierarchy in general can come onto public consciousness without being disguised by the question of "sex". Similarly for all the other "questions" such as "racism" that managerial society will eventually solve.
Yes...you heard me correctly. All of the "isms" will be solved by our present society. What will not be resolved is the division of society into classes, some of which are order givers, some of which are order takers and some of which are mere recipients of decisions taken above them. The questions raised by feminism have a particular urgency, at least here in Canada. But, once more, these questions will be resolved in the years to come. This movement of history will have its backs and forths, but it is inevitable. What distresses Molly is the lack of historical perspective of "the left", including anarchists, and the desire to descend into the sort of cultism exemplified by the buzzword "anti-oppression work". This is nothing but attempts at psychological torture and has nothing to do with what Molly styles as "completing the managerial revolution". This revolution began over 100 years ago with the displacement of the capitalists as a ruling class by the managers. It will fulfill all of the "sectoral demands" of leftism today because, despite the illusions of leftists, it is in the self-interest of the ruling class to accede to such things. Managerial society is the closest we have had to a pure meritocracy in human history. It far outdoes imperial China because it is far more inclusive than such a society could ever be. The advancement of the "sectoral managers" will drag others along with them. Much of this is quite advanced today.
What does this mean for anarchism ? Certainly not that we abandon so-called "sectoral demands", particularly as some of these demands relate to class issues that cannot be solved by managerialism. It means that we should be supportive of "most" but not all of the demands of our present left (insofar as it is one managerial group struggling for power in our society) as long as their demands coincide with the anarchist idea of "justice". It is sort of "clearing the decks" for the struggles that will come in the future.

MORE FOUND TREASURES IN OUR LINKS SECTION:
(OR AS CARL SAGAN WOULD SAY, "A SELECTION FROM BILLIONS AND BILLIONS)
Molly has just added yet more links to her blog. Under the general Links section there is the Institute for Anarchist Studies (http://www.anarchist-studies.org ), and under the Scientific Links section there is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (http://www.ipcc.ch ), an UN site with a wealth of information on climate change and New Scientist magazine (http://www.newscientist.com ). Also under Scientific Links is a text called 'Evolution's Arrow' (http://users.tpg.com.au/users/jes999/index.htm ). A little "truth in advertising" in terms of the last. The author may see, "the direction(of evolution) is towards unification and cooperation over greater and greater scales" . Yet he is still very much a governmentalist who sees government as a progressive institution that has no chance of being superseded.
Then there are 3 Australian blogs that I have added to the Blogs section, Aketus Blog (http://aketus.anarchobase.com ), Anarcho-Din (http://anarcho-din.anarchobase.com ) and Slackbastard Anarchist Blog (http://slackbastard.anarchobase.com ). There are also two items under the 'Other Interesting Links' section. One is the (take a deep breath) 'International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers Associations', listed as the IUF (http://www.iuf.org ). They are a source of international labour solidarity campaigns. In this case one word serves for 13 in the title.
Finally there is 'Scary Squirrel World' (http://scarysquirrel.org) , a great source for humour. Look for more items from this source.
