ANARCHIST MAGAZINES:
BLACK FLAG APPEAL:
The English anarchist journal "Black Flag' is looking for contributions to its next edition. Here's their request via the Anarkismo website.
@@@@@@@@@@

Black Flag issue 230 appeal:
Looking for articles for the next issue of Black Flag.

Black Flag is a UK based class struggle anarchist magazine which (currently) comes out twice a year. We are not affiliated with any of the British anarchist federations, although we aim to have friendly relationships with all and hope to increase co-operation in the future. We also work with the comrades at Freedom.
We are currently getting issue 230 ready and we are appealing for comrades to contribute articles. We aim, as usual, to have the autumn issue ready for this year’s London Anarchist Bookfair (which is the 24th of October this year and, as usual, we will be having a stall). This means that we need material as soon as possible for early copy, with a final the deadline of September 19th – but, obviously, the sooner the better!
As usual, we need articles about current events. We have a lot of history and theory, although obviously if it is a good article we would consider it.
If you are interested in getting involved, please contact us. And please pass this onto anyone who would be interested in writing articles or otherwise getting involved. Articles should be, preferably, in rich text format (rtf).
Needless to say, we are looking for articles by class struggle anarchists (or those close to that position) and which reflect a communist-anarchist or anarcho-syndicalist perspective (or, again, those close to that position).
If you are interested in getting issues of Black Flag to sell, please contact us as well. One of the regular issues with the magazine is distribution and we really need for comrades to take bundles to sell. There is little point in producing a magazine which only a few people read!
We recently had an excellent review of the last issue (229) in Freedom and we have placed back issues on line (numbers 226, 227 and 228) in case you wish to see what it is like. http://libcom.org/library/black-flag-issue-226
Obviously, we would like comrades to buy these if they can (we do have printers bills to pay!).
If you have articles for us, or wish to get involved please contact us.

ANARCHIST MAGAZINES:
BLACK FLAG WANTS ARTICLES:
The following is an appeal from the British anarchist magazine 'Black Flag'. Seems they're on the hunt for articles. If you have an itchy typing finger why not drop them a line.

Black Flag issue 229 appeal:

We also work with the comrades at Freedom.
We are currently getting issue 229 ready and we are appealing for comrades to contribute articles. The deadline is mid-March (at the latest) and we need articles on current events -- for example, an analysis of the recent wildcat strikes would be good, or the crack-down in France on anarchists, or the recent riots in Greece.
We have a lot of history and theory, although obviously if its a good article we would consider it.

ANARCHIST MOVEMENT:
BLACK FLAG LOOKING FOR WRITERS:
Black Flag, one of the leading anarchist magazines in the UK is on the search for contributors. Have something to say ? Think you can say it well ? Why not give BF the internet equivalent of a dingle. The following announcement is from the Anarchist Writers blog.
......................................
Black Flag -- call for contributions/help
I would just to like to call for contributions for the next issue of Black Flag, the UK's leading (and oldest) anarchist magazine(I guess this description depends on the difference between "magazine" and "newspaper' as freedom is quite obviously older than BF-Molly). It has a class struggle anarchist perspective, i.e., communist-anarchist or anarcho-syndicalist.

We are aiming to make it bi-annual this year and the first issue was published for May Day. The next will be for the London Anarchist bookfair in October. The deadline is in mid-August, but please contact us to you are planning to contribute material.

We are specifically looking for someone to write about the health sector, discussing anarchist ideas on the state of the NHS and the demands in America for a state run system instead of their quasi-privatised system. Specifically, what do anarchists do in the short run with regards to New Labour plans on the NHS (which seems to be privatisation by stealth) and the obvious limitations in the American system (as prompted, in part, by "Sicko"). Something beyond "We need a revolution", in other words.

Also, we need articles which analysis current struggles and events. As a bi-annual magazine, we need more than just reporting. Historical material and reviews are welcome, but we are not short of them and we wish to have a good balance between current analysis and historical articles.

Obviously, we are looking for work in the class struggle anarchist tradition but we will consider libertarian Marxist material as well. As long as it is interesting and makes valid points, it will be given a hearing.

The End of 'Black Flag':
Recent comments on the 'Anarkismo' site (see 'Links' on the left) seem to say that the British anarchist journal 'Black Flag' may cease publication after 35 years of spreading the anarchist word. The ins and outs of this possibility are discussed in the post and comments, and I'm sure that other comments will be added.
One thing I have to object to, however, is the implication that the era of a "print journal" is over. This isn't directly stated, but a casual reader could take this meaning from the article. The net is great, but it lacks artistry. No e-site will ever equal the aesthetic appeal of a well produced book, or even a journal such as the Match.

Even more importantly, journals are for browsing in the home, in the bar or in the restaurant. They are "cosier" and "slower". I'd hate to see a bar where the only people reading were those reading a screen. When you're done you leave the paper on the table for the next person. Print can reach out in public places in ways that the internet never will. The screen tends to suck the attention from the viewer in a way that print does not. A reader can easily glance up at the surroundings and return to the text in a much more comfortable way than a captive of the computer can. The book and journal are not such hard taskmasters.

At the same time the printed word holds the reader's attention in a way that the internet cannot. Things that are read on the printed page are much more likely to both "stick" and to provoke thought than things viewed on a screen- where the temptation is always there to treat the text in the same way as we treat television programs. Fuzz, blur, skip, jump,etc.. Unless, of course, you're plotting retribution against the author of the word on the screen. A bad habit that I occasionally indulge in- mostly in reference to those with the all the morality of a bad strain of typhoid fever. That temptation isn't present in reading the printed word, or at least the act is far harder to carry out.
Anyways, check out the post on Anarkismo and join it if you like.
Molly
