ANARCHIST PUBLICATIONS:
THE IRISH ANARCHIST REVIEW:

A new bright star in the anarchist constellation...The Irish Anarchist Review, published by the Irish Workers' Solidarity Movement. Upholding their long tradition of sensible and solid analysis the WSM has produced a winner with this one. Here's the announcement and a foretaste. You can download the full issue here.

Announcing the WSM Irish Anarchist Review Issue 1

------------------------
Welcome to the first issue of The Irish Anarchist Review, the new political magazine from the Workers Solidarity Movement. This magazine will explore ideas and practical struggles that can teach us about building a revolutionary movement today. We decided to cease printing Red & Black Revolution, and start this project, aimed at provoking debate and discussion among anarchists and the left. For this purpose, we will be pursuing a non-sectarian approach, taking ideas from various left currents, mainstream discourse, and reflections on experiences of life and struggle. We will take, print, and discuss, anything that we find useful for our needs. We hope that readers will have a similar attitude, and will use the magazine to discuss, debate and develop ideas. We will also welcome submissions and responses to articles.

This issue is shaped by the current financial crisis, and more particularly, by the reactions of the Irish political and capitalist classes, as they pursue an aggressive strategy of cutbacks. We have seen the implosion of the building sector, the foundering of the banks upon corruption and incompetence and the failure of our foreign investment based economic model. Moreover, we have seen that the government response has been to protect the banks and builders by transferring wealth from social services, public pay and increased taxation straight into bank bailouts and NAMAland. This needs to be identified for what it is: an act of outright class warfare.

We are faced with a situation where a strong and organised response to government attacks is absolutely necessary, but is constrained by the prevailing ideology and practice of partnership. The most pressing concern for Irish radicals today is to build a labour movement that rejects the corporatist mentality and service-delivery model of ICTU and poses instead workers self-organisation as the basis for struggle. With this in mind, this and future issues will look for inspiration in revitalising class-based politics.

The weakening of Irish organised labour through the Celtic Tiger period is examined by James R's article, http://www.wsm.ie/c/unions-after-celtic-tiger and he poses some requirements for the emergence of a class movement that can deal with the threats of the present while bearing a vision of a better future. Andrew Flood looks at some of the positive http://www.wsm.ie/content/consequences-24th-november-public-sector-strike elements of recent struggles, emphasising the possibilities for self-organisation http://www.wsm.ie/c/capitalist-crisis-union-resistance-ireland and direct action made visible in the recent struggles.

We feature two articles that try to learn from the experiences of radicals internationally. Ronan McAoidh reviews the work of Swedish group, KaÌmpa Tillsammans!, http://www.wsm.ie/content/faceless-resistance which argues that affinity between workers, not just union organisation, is the basis of successful struggles. An interview with Alex Foti http://www.wsm.ie/c/mayday-interview-alex-foti explores organising tactics that try to deal with the growing trend of flexible working conditions.

The reviews also tie into this theme, assessing the development of an American working-class counter-culture http://www.wsm.ie/c/iww-revolutionary-working-class-culture and, by looking at workplace blogging, http://www.wsm.ie/c/checkout-life-tills discussing some ways in which this can be done today.

Overall, this issue attempts to learn from the current weakness of the Irish working class, and explores both the origins of this weakness and some routes towards a combative class movement, capable of disrupting the ruling class offensive on living and working conditions and posing an altogether different vision of society, and, most importantly, a way of getting there.

Articles

Reflections on the 24th November
http://www.wsm.ie/content/consequences-24th-november-public-sector-strike
On the 24th of November something extraordinary happened. Some 250,000 workers acted together in a day-long strike against the public sector wage cuts planned by the government. The vast majority of these workers had never gone on strike before, yet across almost all workplaces the strike involved 90% or more of those working.

Capitalist crisis and union resistance in Ireland
http://www.wsm.ie/c/capitalist-crisis-union-resistance-ireland
Late 2008 saw the Irish capitalist class wage a major ideological struggle against the Irish working class. They called for workers to bear the brunt of the capitalist crisis. Print media, TV and radio carried segment after segment where well-paid commentators argued that workers, in particular public sector workers, were earning too much, had overly generous pensions and that the public had unrealistic expectations of public services.

The usefulness of Faceless Resistance http://www.wsm.ie/content/faceless-resistance
Although Faceless Resistance as a concept has been discussed among radical circles in Sweden for several years, it has only recently begun to be noticed in the English speaking world, primarily due to delays in texts being translated. In this article I will look primarily at the work of Kampa Tillsammans, who developed the core ideas of Faceless Resistance, but I will also situate these ideas in their historical and social context and introduce other tendencies that have been influenced by and adapted some of the theory.

Mayday had become like a funeral - interview with Alex Foti
http://www.wsm.ie/c/mayday-interview-alex-foti
In the middle years of this decade, Alex Foti became known across activist circles for involvement in the Euromayday Parades. In a special themed issue of Green Pepper, Foti and the Chain Workers Collective sketched a very attractive understanding of the work discipline of contemporary capitalism. In their understanding, society had found itself in a situation of profound disjuncture with our working pasts - life today was defined by contingent employment rather than the traditional job for life.

The unions after the celtic tiger http://www.wsm.ie/c/unions-after-celtic-tiger
A rather strange figure is moving to centre stage in Irish politics, that of the trade unions - absent from mass struggles until recently and weakened over the decades of social partnership, they are now the only possible source of a movement that can confront attempts to transfer the cost of the recession to working people. This statement does not come with out some qualms.

Checkout: Life On The Tills http://www.wsm.ie/c/checkout-life-tills
Anna Samâ, as you might guess, is a pseudonym, the handle of a French blogger who decided to put her years behind the till to good use on a website describing the day-to- day experience of supermarket workers in all its tedious glory. In a way it's refreshing to discover that the psychology of the checkout girl / boy appears to be the same wherever you go - my own days at Centra and the like are well imprinted on the brain, but they could have been an atypical reflection of my general misanthropy, grumpiness and ill will towards the rest of the species.

Review: The IWW and The Making of a Revolutionary Working Class Counter culture
http://www.wsm.ie/c/iww-revolutionary-working-class-culture
The book can be read in a number of ways; on one hand it rescues the IWW from Stalinist critics that fashionably flounced after Russian Bolshevism; it gives insight to the politics and personalities of the union itself and rescues Hill the man. But as suggested by the subtitle, itâs Rosemont's treatment of how the IWW built a counter hegemonic working class culture that is the most interesting facet of this brick thick work.

Joey Only and his gang of rebel outlaws are hitting the road again this year to promote a brand new record, Transgression Trail. The album is already getting radio airplay and is by far the best thing Joey Only has accomplished. The album features 12 new originals all uniquely northern, this record is a testament to the thousands of miles he has logged playing shows. The album is available in stores across Canada through Scratch Records.

The Outlaw Band is at its peak, they are putting on a psychedelic show unlike any other folk-country band. The Outlaws are putting on relentless shows refusing to stop for set breaks, playing all night long until the venue is whipped up into an alcohol fueled frenzy. The Outlaws aim to outplay every country band in Canada.

The Outlaws will be on the mainstage of festivals such as Under the Volcano, Winlaw Music Fest, Music on the Mountain Fest, Morfree Mountain Music Fest, Artswells Festival and they look forward to meeting Buffy St.Marie at the Brandon Folk Fest. They are opening for Fred Eaglesmith a bunch of times and American recording artist Austin Lucas. They will be seen at Neskonlith Reserve prior to the PowWow and Kumsheen Rafting Adventures with opening act Gerry Hannah of the Subhumans.

INTERNATIONAL LABOUR-SPAIN:
CGT ASSESSES GENERAL STRIKE:

Molly reported on the one day public sector strike in Spain on June 8. My opinion was that it was a failure, not the least because the two largest unions the CCOO and the UGT were merely going through the motions and wanted it to fail. Spain's largest anarchosyndicalist union confederation the CGT participated enthusiastically in the strike while, at the same time, calling for a broader and longer lasting real general strike. The response of the CNT was mixed, but many sections were also participants with demands similar to that of the CGT. What follows is the assessment of June 8 on the part of the CGT.
@@@@@@@@@@

Press Release issued from the CGT (07/06/2010)
Evaluation statement from the Permanent Secretariat of the CGT of the public sector strike, and the Day of Struggle, convened by the CGT for June 8.

The General Confederation of Labour views the participation of workers and employees in the public sector strike and in the demonstrations of the Day of Struggle for the general strike called by the CGT positively.

The CGT called for a public sector strike on June 8, for those employed by public enterprises (Renfe, ADIF, AENA, Remasa, Mail, etc).

It also convened a day of action from other sectors of the workers for the whole population and society so they can make a combined clamour against the cuts in labor and social rights, against the brutal attack that markets are exerting, against the next labor "reform:. In short, against anti-social policy of the government.

Regardless of the data and statistics of acknowledged participation in public administration (15%),overall the CGT can be considered to have exceeded 50%. However, the important thing today was that after many years of demobilization, especially for the public employees, today was a positive step forward to take up a dynamic of mobilization and as always this effort is to be and more to the black perspective for social situations the labor market.

The CGT as a trade union convener made a significant effort to make this strike a success, and we believe that other convening unions have did not actually bet on the success of the strike. If they had, there would have been massive participation.

On the other hand, for the CGT this is only one more day of fighting in campaigns and demonstrations in favor of a general strike, an action that CGT sees as a priority and absolutely necessary to stop anti-social policy of the government. The CGT has called for the mobilization and participation of all the people and all those that are affected.

Hundreds of informational pickets, dozens of rallies, demonstrations and practical action in many cities of the Spanish state were called for a unanimous outcry against the aggressions of banks, politicians and employers against the working class and society as a whole.

We highlight some data in these demonstrations: 100% participation of the strike on the railways of the Generalitat , an important follow-up postal strike (70%) considering that the June 10 strike was specific to this sector, an important part of the strike in the Public Administration (75%), including particularly the centers where the CGT is present, where the incidence is even greater. Of course, we value greatly the massive participation in many of the events and actions performed.

On the negative side of the mobilization, we emphasize that workers are fed up with the official unions and their domesticated and wrongly timed mobilizations.

Finally, we express our absolute conviction that June 8 will be only the beginning of a social and labor unrest that will lead to an overwhelming response of citizens and the working class to the excesses and aggressions of the employers, governments and Banks:
Today more than ever, we need a GENERAL STRIKE

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY:
THE BANDS ARE BANNED:

Sometimes there are items of stupidity over and above the call of foolishness that leave me gaping with wide eyed wonder. Now appreciate that I am an anarchist and as such am privy to the occasional screed from those who want to "abolish civilization" (a mercifully small part of modern anarchism) and who also- beggar the imagination- delude themselves into thinking they have a way to accomplish this goal. You'd think I'd be enured to craziness. No such thing. The so-called "mainstream society" contunues to produce examples of insanity that equal or surpass the idea of "abolishing civilization", and it does it on a routine basis. What follows is one such example.
SBSBSBSBSBSBSB
Apparently there is a new 'tweenie' fad called 'Silly Bandz'. I guess that I may have seen them on the arms of young kids in the homes that I visit but I never paid any attention whatsoever- which is perhaps exactly the level of attention they deserve. I'd be hard put to think of anything that deserves less attention. Basically they are cheap rubber bands in the shape of various things-animals, mythical figures, princess icons, etc. that kids strap across their wrists. There's a website for them, and a Wikipedia note on them as well.

Considering the low cost of this item (which is, of course at least about 50 times the cost of production) I'm considering ordering a bunch to amuse the yard apes and keep them off my back when I visit homes. OK. If you can think of anything more harmless (but I'm sure you can think of things more silly) I challenge you to present it. Maybe nose picking in private? This, however, is not the opinion of various schools who have "banned the silly bands". I became aware of this while reading this week's Time Magazine. They have a more extensive article online. What on God's Green earth could be the problem here ? The teachers and the principals who put their insanity into policy claim that it is "distracting".

Pupils may "play with their bands" rather than sitting with bated breath until the next utterance from the god at the front of the room. I suggest they strip the little buggers naked so they will have nothing to "play with" while they imbibe the great wisdom from the front of the room. But maybe then they would still have "something to play with". Ooops !

The teachers have also claimed that the kids engage in 'trades' of the bands and that sometimes the partners in these trades "regret" the deals that they have made. This leads to "hard feelings", and, of course, the abolition of any feeling beyond loyalty to an ideology is a primary goal of modern education.

Teachers today are, for instance, under the illusion that they can "abolish bullying" by ramping up the control of the students by institutional bullying to such a degree that the students will not engage in "bullying" - other than of course informing the great bully (the teachers and the school administration) of violations of the code ie informing just like any good member of the Hitler Youth would have done.

The inculcation of ideology, however, while a primary goal of our education system is not the primary goal. That goal is pretty simple...to keep the little bastards babysat so that both their parents can engage in the wage labour necessary to raise a family today. In the last few decades the ideas of "progressive eduction" have been gradually corrupted such that today the idea that there are objective standards of knowledge would be considered evidence that you were a right wing fanatic. At the same time the school system, while it has gradually abandoned the real function of teaching ie the passing on of knowledge (the conservatives are right here) has taken up a Hitler/Stalin pact whereby, as long as you have the little lizards trapped in kid jail for a few hours a day you might as well "teach them to behave properly". In this desire to exercise control leftists and right wingers are equally enthusiastic.

The desire to "ban the bands" has to be seen in this context. Of course it is silly and absurd, but it means a lot to that portion of the working class whose product is social control. It comes close to being their reason for being. It is also taken up with enthusiasm by their bosses who are part of the ruling class and are very much in agreement with the idea that children should be controlled whether the control is rational or not. After all control is the major reason for the institutions that they govern. The irrationality is not so irrational once you understand that, aside from warehousing kids, one of the major functions of the schools are to discipline kids to "fit in" to institutions where the word of the boss and his point of view is divine.

That's how I personally see this incredible attempt to impose bureaucratic will on young children. I don't know how long a period of "physical reality" without the ability to control others would be necessary to reform people who want to increase their power by such evil acts. Canada has a huge area on Ellsmere Island for their colonies where they would have no opportunity to direct the behavior of anyone else. A compassionate society would, of course, provide the necessary food and shelter for the bare physical comforts necessary to philosophical contemplation on the nature of good and evil. No "political commissars" would be provided. Figure it out yourselves guys, and maybe some day you could rejoin civilized society.

INTERNATIONAL POLITICS/SPORTS:
STATEMENT FROM SOUTH AFRICA ON THE GAMES:
Molly has to admit it. She's been following the World Cup games in South Africa fairly religiously (if you can ascribe such a term to Molly). So far it is as I said before. Ties dominate the field even though South Korea has defeated Greece 4/0 and Argentina has defeated Nigeria 2/0 in group B. groups A is nothing but ties so far. One wonders how they will make decisions if this trend continues.
Meanwhile there is a lot going on "behind the scenes" that doesn't end up telecast to your local bar. Here's a statement from the Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Front about the effect of the games on the ordinary person in South Africa. the following comes from the Anarkismo website.
@@@@@@@@@@
All in the Name of the Beautiful Gain
A ZACF statement on the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa

The 2010 Soccer World Cup must be exposed for the utter sham that it is. The ZACF strongly condemns the audacity and hypocrisy of the government in presenting the occasion as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity for the economic and social upliftment of those living in South Africa (and the rest of the continent). What is glaringly clear is that the “opportunity” is and continues to be that of a feeding-frenzy for global and domestic capital and the South African ruling elite. In fact, if anything, the event is more likely to have devastating consequences for South Africa’s poor and working class – a process that is already underway.

In preparing to host the World Cup the government has spent close to R800 billion (R757 billion on infrastructure development and R30 billion on stadiums that will never be filled again), a massive slap in the face for those living in a country characterized by desperate poverty and close to 40% unemployment. Over the past five years the working poor have expressed their outrage and disappointment at the government’s failure to redress the massive social inequality in over 8,000 service delivery protests for basic services and housing countrywide. This pattern of spending is further evidence of the maintenance of the failed neoliberal capitalist model and its “trickle down” economics, which have done nothing but deepen inequality and poverty globally. Despite previous claims to the contrary, the government has recently admitted this by doing an about turn, and now pretends that the project was “never intended” to be a profit making exercise [1].

South Africa desperately needs large-scale public infrastructure, especially in the area of public transport which is in some cities, including Johannesburg, is almost entirely absent. The Gautrain, which was launched on Tuesday the 8th June (just in time for the big event) is probably the biggest irony here: in a country where the large majority rely on unsafe private mini-bus taxis to travel long distances on a daily basis, the Gautrain offers high speed, luxury transport for tourists and those travelling between Johannesburg and Pretoria… who can afford it if a single trip between the airport and Sandton will set you back a massive R100. The same picture reveals itself everywhere: the Airports company of South Africa (ACSA) has spent over R16 billion on upgrading the airports, the commercialised South African National Road Agency Ltd (SANRAL) has spent over R23 billion on a new network of toll roads – all of which will implement strict cost-recovery measures to recoup the billions spent, and most of which will be of little benefit to poor South Africans. All over the country municipalities have embarked on urban regeneration schemes… accompanied by corresponding gentrification schemes, as the government attempts to hastily paper over the harsh South African reality. Over 15,000 homeless people and street children have been rounded up and dumped in shelters in Johannesburg alone, in Cape Town the municipality has evicted thousands of people from poor areas and squatter camps as part of the World Cup vanity project. The City of Cape Town (unsuccessfully) attempted to evict 10,000 Joe Slovo residents from their homes in order to hide them from the tourists travelling along the N2 highway, and elsewhere they are being removed to make space for stadiums, fan parks or train stations [2]. In Soweto, roads are being beautified along main tourist and FIFA routes, while adjacent schools sport broken windows and crumbling buildings.

Although many South Africans remain unconvinced, others are inundated and swept along by the deluge of nationalist propaganda aimed at diverting attention from the circus that is the World Cup. Every Friday has been deemed “soccer Friday”, in which the “nation” is encouraged (and school children forced) to sport Bafana-Bafana t-shirts. Cars are kitted out in flags, people learn the “Diski-dance” which is performed regularly at every tourist restaurant, and buy Zakumi mascot dolls. Anyone sceptical of the hype is denigrated unpatriotic, the prime example being when appeals were made to striking South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) workers to shelve their concerns “in the national interest” [3]. In a context where close to a million jobs have been lost over the course of the past year, government celebrations that the world cup has created over 400 000 jobs are empty and insulting. The jobs that have been created in the run up have been mostly casual or “Limited Duration Contracts (LCDs)”, taken by workers that are not unionised and paid well below the minimum wage.

Apart from the repression of unions, social movements have received similar hostility from the state, which has unofficially put a blanket ban on all protest for the duration of the event. In fact there is some evidence that this has been in place since as early as the 1st March. According to Jane Duncan:

A snap survey conducted at the end of last week of other municipalities hosting World Cup matches revealed that a blanket ban on gatherings is in operation. According to the Rustenberg municipality, "gatherings are closed for the World Cup". The Mbombela municipality was told by the SAPS that they were not going to allow gatherings during the World Cup. The Cape Town City Council claimed that it continues to accept applications for marches, but indicated that it "may be a problem" during the World Cup period. According to the Nelson Mandela Bay and Ethekwini municipalities, the police will not allow gatherings over the World Cup period [4].

Although it is clear that the constitution, often hailed for its “progressiveness” is far from the guarantor of freedom and equality that government claims it to be, this new form of repression is clearly in contradiction with the constitutional right to freedoms of expression and gathering. However, social movements in Johannesburg including the Anti-Privatisation Forum and several others have not given up so easily, having managed to get authorization for a protest march on the day of the opening with the help of the Freedom of Expression Institute. However, the march is being forced to be held three kilometres from the stadium where it will not attract the sort of media attention the government is worried about.

Not only has the state been repressively severe on the poor and any anti-World Cup demonstration or activity, all within the guise of painting South Africa as a host flinging its arms open in invitation to those flocking to its upmarket hotels, bed-and-breakfasts and cocktail lounges, but it does so under the guidance of Sepp Blatter & Friends’ legal criminal empire called FIFA (wonderfully referred to as THIEFA by the Durban Social Forum). Not only are they expected to benefit from a 2010 windfall of nearly € 1.2 billion, but have already gained over € 1 billion from media rights alone.

The stadia, and areas around the stadia, which were handed over to FIFA for the duration of the tournament (“tax-free cocoons” literally creating FIFA-controlled and monitored areas exempt from normal taxation and other State laws), and all routes to and from the stadia have been forcibly cleared of anyone selling non-sanctioned FIFA products and those eking out an existence in squatter camps along airport roads. As such, people who would have banked on World Cup sales to boost their survival incomes are left out in the "trickle down" cold.

FIFA, as sole owner of the World Cup brand and its spin-off products, also has a team of approximately 100 lawyers scouring the country for any unauthorised selling of these products and marketing of the brand. These products are seized and sellers are arrested despite the fact that most in South Africa and on the continent purchase their products from the informal trading sector, as very few have R400 to dole out on team t-shirts and other gear. It has also has effectively gagged journalists with an accreditation clause that prevents media organisations from bringing FIFA into disrepute, clearly compromising freedom of press [5].

The major irony is that soccer was once truly the game of the working class. Viewing games live at stadia was cheap and easily accessible to people who chose to spend 90 minutes forgetting about the daily drudgery of their lives under the boot of the boss and the State. Today, professional football and the World Cup bring exorbitant profits to a small cabal of a global and domestic elite (with billions spent unnecessarily and in a time of a global capitalist crisis) who charge patrons thousands of rands, pounds, euros, etc. every season to watch disgustingly overpaid footballers fall and dive all over manicured pitches at the slightest tug and who squabble, via parasitic agents, over whether or not they are deserving of their huge salaries. A game, which in many respects maintains its aesthetic beauty, has lost its working-class soul and has been reduced to just another set of commodities to be exploited.

Bakunin once said that “people go to church for the same reasons they go to a tavern: to stupefy themselves, to forget their misery, to imagine themselves, for a few minutes anyway, free and happy”. Perhaps, amongst all the blindly nationalistic flag waving and vuvuzela-blowing, we can add sport to his equation and that it might seem easier to forget than to actively partake in combating injustice and inequality. There are many who do, though, and the working class and poor and their organisations are not as malleable to illusion as the government would want to believe. From temporary squatter camp constructions at the doors of the stadia, to mass protest and demonstrations, to countrywide strike action, unsanctioned or not, despite the taunts and jeers and the labels of being “unpatriotic”, or blanket bans on freedom of speech, we will defiantly make our voices heard to expose the terrible inequalities characterising our society and the global games played at the expense of the lives of those upon whom empires are built and will be, ultimately, destroyed.

Down with the World Cup!
Phansi state repression and divisive nationalism!
Phambili the people's struggle against exploitation and profiteering!

SWEATSHOPS AND SOCCER:

It's day 2 of the World Cup in South Africa, and ties seem to be the order of the day. Yesterday it was Mexico/South Africa 1/1. Today it's Britain/USA also 1/1. No clear winners here. behind the scenes, however, there are definite losers...the workers in east and south Asia who work in brutal sweatshops manufacturing the soccer balls used in the games. It seems that there is more wrong with these balls than just poor aerodynamics. Here's the story and an appeal from the Clean Clothes Campaign.

Soccer Ball Stitchers Need Your Support!
Make your voice be heard today to put pressure on FIFA. New research reveals that workers stitching soccer balls in Pakistan, India, China and Thailand continue to experience alarming labour rights violations.

Problems highlighted in the report are:

•child labour still exists in the Pakistani industry especially within home-based work.
•gender discrimination of female home-based workers, being paid the least and facing the constant thread of losing their jobs due to pregnancy;
•overtime working hours as in one Chinese factory, where workers were found to work up to 21 hours a day every day for an entire month;
•the lack of proper drinking water or medical care facilities, and even toilets, as found in Indian stitching centres.
About 75% of the over 200 workers interviewed in Pakistan were not permanent workers and therefore didn’t have access to benefits and social security.

Over the past decade, regular reports of violations of human rights in soccer ball production have been presented to key players in the industry including global brands and FIFA.

The CCC is shocked that after all of these years, low wages and other labour rights violations are still the norm and not the exception in the industry. Please remind FIFA that they are responsible for their sport, and that as fans worldwide get excited about the games, the public expects the soccer ball industry to finally live up to its promises.

Dear Sir,

On June 7th, 2010 the International Labour Rights Forum released a detailed report "Missed the Goal for Workers: the Reality of Soccer Ball Stitchers" highlighting industry wide labour rights violations. In particular, ILRF's research identified some FIFA licensees in Pakistan with connections to child labour, poverty wages and extensive use of temporary labourers.

The research shows that child labour still exists in the Pakistani industry especially within home-based work. Other problems highlighted in this report are gender discrimination of female home-based workers, being paid the least and facing the constant thread of losing their jobs due to pregnancy; overtime working hours as in one Chinese factory, where workers were found to work up to 21 hours a day every day for an entire month; lack of proper drinking water or medical care facilities, and even toilets, as found in Indian stitching centres. I am shocked that after all of these years, low wages and other labour rights violations are still the norm and not the exception in the industry. POLICE INVADE OCCUPIED MINE IN SONORA MEXICO:

For years now miners at the Cananea Mine in Sonora Mexico have been on strike and have occupied the mine worksite. Last Sunday the Mexican State acted on behalf of the mine owners to clear the site of strikers. Here's the story from the Upside Down World website.

Mexican Police Attack Cananea Mine, Beating and Arresting Striking Miners
Written by Dan La Botz
Source: Labor Notes

As many as 2,000 Mexican Federal Police and Sonora State Police, supported by helicopters, invaded the Cananea copper mine Sunday night around 10 p.m., firing tear gas and attacking and beating miners who were defending the mine, according to news reports.

With the police having cleared the mine, managers from Grupo Mexico, the mine owner, took control of the facilities. The company reported that it had 2,000 “contractors” ready to go to work as soon as it was safe to do so.

A small fire broke out in a building on company property. The government says there were no injuries. An eyewitness report states that police fired guns and that one member of Local 65 of the Mexican miners union was wounded. No miners had any weapons, according to the report. The eyewitness adds that after the police took the mine, a meeting of the local union was immediately called, during which a Steelworkers member was speaking when police entered, breaking windows and firing tear gas without regard to the men, women, and children present. The USW, a U.S. and Canadian union, has supported the Cananea struggle for years.

The Mexican Miners and Metal Workers Union (SNTMMRM) has had control of the mine since it went on strike three years ago over health and safety issues. A Mexican court ruled in February that the strike was over and that miners had to leave the mine, but for four months they have refused to do so.

Police had reportedly went to the mine to execute arrest warrants against union leaders, among them Sergio Tolano Lizarraga, general secretary of Local 65, and Juan Gutierrez Ballesteros, delegate to the National Executive Committee of the union.

The strike at the Cananea mine, which once produced 40 percent of Mexico’s copper, has reportedly cost the company $1.35 billion. The strike forms part of a larger struggle between the independent-minded and militant Mexican Mine Workers Union on the one hand and Grupo Mexico and the Mexican government on the other.

As might be expected a group of people who have occupied their workplace for three years don't give up easily. Here's a report from Reuters about how the miners have regrouped and are trying to prevent scabs from entering the mine.

UPDATE 1-Mexican police and miners clash at Cananea mine
MEXICO CITY June 10 (Reuters) - Mexican miners clashed briefly with federal police on Thursday at the Cananea copper mine, raising tensions which could complicate owner Grupo Mexico's efforts to reopen the pit after a nearly 3-year-long strike was broken.

Two people were injured during the scuffle, which began when unionized miners tried to block contract workers from entering the mine to start repairs, the union said in a statement. A spokeswoman for the Federal Police said one policeman had teeth knocked out in the clash but denied any miners were hurt.

"There were three large buses of scabs (the company) was bringing into the property and there was a confrontation between the miners and the federal police," Manny Armenta, a visiting representative of the United Steelworkers union, said. The U.S. union has backed the miners.

Television images of the clash showed miners throwing rocks at police in riot gear and security forces responding by shooting tear gas guns at the workers on a road near the mine.

Federal Police took control of the mine in a late Sunday night raid after the union lost a long series of legal battles and a court ruled Grupo Mexico (GMEXICOB.MX) could fire the workers and reopen the copper mine, Mexico's largest.

The company has said the mine in northern Mexico near the U.S.-Mexico border could be running again as soon as the end of this year. [ID:nN09174805]

Cananea once produced 40 percent of Mexico's copper but has been closed since July 2007 when the strike began over health and safety concerns.

Grupo Mexico is planning to invest $3.8 billion in expanding Cananea to increase production there from 190,000 tonnes to 460,000 tonnes a year.

SUPPORT ACCOR HOTEL WORKERS:

Accor claims to be the 'European leader' in hotels. As usual one should take such corporate claims with a Siberian salt mine full of product. In Canada they operate three hotels in Ontario under the Novotel brand. One thing they are, however, the leader in is treachery as the following story from the IUF union confederation makes clear. The IUF are asking you to stand in solidarity with the hotel workers at these three hotels in their struggle for union representation. Here's the story.
☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼
Act Now! - Support the Struggle for Trade Union Rights at Accor Canada Hotels
Since 2008 workers at three Accor hotels in Canada, have been organizing to win union recognition and collective bargaining rights in the face of fierce opposition from management.

Several workers at the Novotel Mississauga, Novotel North York, and Novotel Ottawa have been fired or punished with reduced shifts or hours after becoming public union supporters. Management has repeatedly pressured workers to vote ‘no’ in union elections.

UNITE HERE! Local 75, which represents more than 6000 workers in 40 Greater Toronto Hotels, including Novotel Toronto Centre, has filed dozens of complaints of labour law violations against Accor management, and community leaders and local politicians have expressed their outrage at the ant-union actions of these hotels.

The Novotel chain is part of the Accor Group of Hotels, which operates 3,982 hotels worldwide with over 150,000 employees. In 1995 Accor signed an agreement with the IUF, by which they undertook "not to oppose efforts to unionize its employees"' The agreement also states that the company "considers respect for union rights to be part of the good reputation of its brand names."

At the Novotel Mississauga in April 2009, 64% of workers demonstrated their support for the union by signing union cards. Despite this, less than a month later only 40% of workers voted for the union - a measure of intense pressure and threats from management.

Myriam Toribo has worked at the Novotel since 2000. She has been an active supporter of the campaign to unionize the hotel since 2005. Over this time, like many of her co-workers, she has been subject to harassment and discrimination for being a union supporter. This has included being told by a manager that the union 'is not good for you' in one-on-one meetings, and not being allocated shifts in accordance with her seniority in line with normal practice at the hotel.

In February this year, the situation escalated when Myriam was fired from her employment at the hotel with no due process. This came after the Hotel had implemented new policies to try and discourage housekeepers from talking to each other either during or before their shifts. Myriam's termination was then announced to the other housekeeping staff to frighten and discourage them from supporting the union. Other union supporters were also told to 'watch out' as they could be next.

In April this year, workers at the Novotel Ottawa showed overwhelming support for the union, and Unite Here! Local 75 called for a recognition ballot. Management then ran an aggressive ‘Vote No’ campaign in the run up to the ballot. This included firing union supporters and holding captive audience meetings with workers to dissuade them from supporting the union. On the day before the ballot, a letter was delivered individually to each worker, encouraging them to vote ‘no’. This pressure led to a 50% vote in favour of the union, just short of the number needed to secure recognition.

At a recent union rally Jeff Segat, a young father of two who helped lead the organizing drive and was fired from his position as cook at the Novotel Ottawa three weeks before the recognition ballot, told supporters “I'm not giving up, and we're not giving up!" The spotlight will continue on Accor’s anti-union record in the coming weeks during the G20 summit and alternative civil society People's Summit. Workers at the Novotel Toronto have overwhelmingly voted in favor of strike action (click here for more information).

In October 2009, the Accor European Works Council called on the company to fully respect the International Trade Union Rights Agreement with the IUF and comply with their commitment to protect employees against all acts of discrimination that tend to violate freedom of association by positively engaging with Unite Here! Despite European and international pressure, the company refuses to sign an agreement with Unite Here! guaranteeing freedom of association.

Accor workers in Canada need your support - click here to send a strong message to Accor! Tell the company that violations of the international trade union rights agreement with the IUF will not be tolerated, and that they should immediately recognize the union at these hotels. Union supporters who were fired since the organizing campaign went public must be reinstated, and those who were victimized through lost shifts or hours must have their pay and conditions restored.

THE LETTER
Please go to this link to send the following letter to Accor management.
☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼

To Gilles Pélisson, Chairman and CEO
Cc Patrick Ollivier, Executive Vice President Global Human Resources

I am shocked to learn of the agrressive anti-union behaviour of management at the Novotel Mississauga, Novotel North York, and Novotel Ottawa hotels in Canada where workers have been organising to win union recognition and collective bargaining rights.

Workers have been fired, or lost shifts or hours after becoming public union supporters. Management has also repeatedly pressured workers to vote ‘no’ in union elections.

This behaviour flies in the face of Accor's global framework agreement with the IUF on Trade Union Rights, in which the company undertakes 'not to oppose efforts to unionize its employees.'

I call on Accor to act immediately to:

- Uphold the letter and spirit of the Trade Union Rights agreement in all current and future dealings with workers employed by Accor in Canada, in particular the commitment not to oppose efforts by its workers to unionize;
- affirm its neutrality publicly and voluntarily grant union recognition with evidence of majority support at these hotels;
- reinstate the union supporters who have been fired and to restore the pay and conditions of those who have been victimized through lost shifts and hours since the organizing campaigns became public in November 2008.

I will be closely following developments at the three Novotel Hotels in Canada.

Yours sincerely

PENSION ACTION NOW:

Canada's finance ministers will be meeting on June 13 to discuss "reform" of the pension system. This meeting will be held against a backdrop of worldwide attacks on the pension system as part of deficit reduction and against a further backdrop of numerous failures of private pension plans. One worries that this is the sort of "reform" that Canadian governments, especially the federal Conservatives, might have in mind. The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers' Union (CEP Union) has a different idea of what should be on the agenda. Here's their appeal for a mass letter to the ministers.

PENSION REFORM NOW

The federal and provincial governments just finished another round of consultations on pensions. Finance ministers will meet mid-June to decide how to reform the Canadian pension system.

It needs to be fixed and CEP has some solid proposals on how to do just that! Retirees have seen their pension benefits reduced drastically as bankrupt companies restructure. Workers have to postpone retiring because their pension savings have shrunk too much with the crash of the stock market.

Send this message to Canada’s Finance Ministers. It’s time for action now!

To Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Finance Ministers:

At your next Finance ministers’ meeting, you will make important decisions to reform the Canadian pension system.

To ensure retirement security for everyone, it is urgent that you :

* Double Canada Pension Plan and the Régime des rentes du Québec benefits;
* Raise the Guaranteed Income Supplement by 15%, and
* Create a National Investment and Pension Fund, as proposed by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, to protect orphaned pension plans when a company is facing bankruptcy.

Pour assurer une sécurité à la retraite pour tous et toutes, il est urgent :

* de doubler les prestations du Régime de pensions du Canada et du Régime des rentes du Québec;
* d’augmenter de 15% le Supplément de revenu garanti et
* de créer un Fonds national d’investissement et de rentes, proposé par le Syndicat canadien des communications, de l’énergie et du papier, pour protéger les régimes de retraite orphelins, suite à la restructuration ou à la faillite d’une compagnie.

INTERNATIONAL LABOUR-SPAIN:
SPANISH PUBLIC SECTOR GENERAL STRIKE FAILS TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES:

As to the title, well maybe yes and maybe no. The general strike of the public sector in Spain yesterday was essentially "plotted" by the largest unions, the UGT (tied umbilically to the governing Socialist Party of Zapatero) and the CCOO (semi-reformed Stalinists who have forgotten everything about socialism but remember everything about bureaucratic manoeuvre). The general opinion in the mass media is that the public sector one day strike was a "test" to see if the idea of a real general strike would fly. The public workers of Spain face a general 5% cut in their pay in addition to other "austerity measures" such as a freeze in 2011, freezing pensions and an end to the Spanish equivalent of the "child bonus". If this was a test the bird didn't fly. This is in the face of an unemployment rate of 20%, the highest in the Euro zone.

Needless to say estimates of strike participation varies wildly. Union (CCOO and UGT) estimates gave numbers as high as 75% while government statements varied but hovered around the 11% range (see Irish Times, Earth Times ). Now long experience has taught me a method of "estimating" the truth in such contradictory claims, and I hold to it even when I am more in favour of one side than another. Double the low number...11% = 22%. Half the high number 75% = 37.5%. Average the two numbers. The probable participation rate by these numbers was 29.75% ie about a little less than 1/3rd of the public sector workers of Spain. This may overestimate the actual participation or at least the enthusiastic participation of public sector workers (ie those who didn't simply adjourn to home or the bar for the day). In Madrid the official CCOO/UGT rally at the end of the day gathered less than 4,000 participants.
I actually dreaded looking this up from the websites of the Spanish anarchosyndicalist organizations, the larger CGT and the much smaller CNT. Given my experience with North American anarchism, which all too often mirrors the idiocy of North American leftism in general I expected a great amount of flag waving and declarations of "victory" like the Communist and Socialist unions are claiming. I was pleasantly surprised.

Both Spanish anarchosyndicalist organizations were actually quite divided about the advisability of the public sector strike with the CNT actually taking pride of place for mentioning "reality" in their debates prior to the event ie mentioning how little support amongst the general Spanish population such a strike would have (or amongst public employees judging from the real participation). The CGT (and the CNT) have long campaigned for a real general strike encompassing both public and private sectors and a strike that was not just a one day symbolic demonstration. The CNT Andalucia joined with CGT Andalucia in reluctant support of the public sector strike. On the other hand the CNT of Badaloz (western Spain) rejected the idea entirely. Within the CGT there was a similar difference of opinion. This was especially prominent in the aftermath of the strike where the CGT of Zaragoza in Aragon republished the statement of the CNT of Aragon denouncing the CCOO and the UGT. the reason for this was the successful attempt of the UGT to exclude the CGT from the official demonstrations and speeches. In most of Spain the anarchists deliberately separated themselves from the official union demonstrations and presented themselves in separate contingents. probably a very wise idea when you are big enough.

The attitude of the CNT and CGT, despite the internal differences in their organizations, had generally two different "tones", connected no doubt to the different situation of the two organizations. The CGT is an organization of perhaps 100,000 members with the support of up to 2 million people in union elections in Spain. As such it is a "real union" and is more inclined to 'realpolitik' than the CNT which has perhaps 5,000 members and doesn't participate in the union elections. The CNT is more inclined to "denounce" the larger unions while the CGT is more inclined to both "pressure" them and present an alternative viewpoint which they hope will serve them in the future. Both organizations were united in saying that a real general strike was what was needed. They differed in how to get to it.

The point may be less than moot now. The underlying subtext of both the CGT and the CNT was that the CCOO and the UGT wanted no such thing as a real general strike. It would upset their cozy bargaining relationship with the socialist government. My brief browsing of the general public opinion in Spain (unconnected to anarchist opinion) is that this was a realistic estimate. Opinions such as "the unions were half-hearted" or "it was merely a show" come up over and over. The bottom line...the play has been acted out. Whatever the CCOO and the UGT claim they will hesitate to try and call a real general strike in Spain for fear of exposing their weakness even more. The government's plans will be carried out, and the great public shows (like in Greece) will give way to the usual backroom dealing - where the participants are more than slightly friendly with each other.

What this means is that even in Spain where perhaps 5% of the population has a favourable long term opinion of anarchism (contrasted to maybe 0.1% in Greece and 0.00001% in North America) that there is a very long term struggle ahead. There will be no magical "rebellion" to pull the country away from the austerity measures. Interestingly there is a little piece of truth in all this controversy about numbers, and it comes from the CGT who report the turnout for the public service sector strike in Barcelona which varied from a low of 20% to a high of 70% (interestingly enough the percentages were generally higher in the sectors where the CGT was strongest). These numbers seem to correlate with my own estimate of about 1/3rd. See here for the CGtT report. It does my heart good to see that my own comrades have a regard for truth.
