CANADIAN ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-TORONTO:
FUNDRAISER TO FIGHT FOR THE LIU FAMILY HOME:
Yet another event, this time from Toronto. The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) has sent out a reminder about their upcoming fundraiser for their fight to save the Liu family home. For more on this situation see previous posts on the Liu family home here at Molly's Blog.
.........................
REMINDER: Liu Family Home Fundraiser- This Friday November 28th‏:
LIU HOME FUNDRAISER FRIDAY,
CINECYCLE, 129 SPADINA AVENUE(Coach House in Laneway)
NOVEMBER 28, 7.30 PM
CASH BAR, FOOD, MUSIC, PRIZE RAFFLE, AUCTION OF SPECIAL DONATED ITEMS
The Liu Family are fighting in court to save their home from the Chinese Christian Herald Crusade and this fundraiser is to help them meet their legal costs.
Margaret Liu was an immigrant from Hong Kong who worked all her life to provide a modest home for her children. When she was in her eighties and had had several strokes, she made out a new will leaving her home to the religious charity. Representatives of the Chinese Gospel Church facilitated the drawing up of the new will. Her daughter, Louise, was not informed that this was going on until the minister of the Church confronted her with this news days after her mother's death.
This wealthy charity does not need the home but Louise and her disabled brother most certainly do. Margaret Liu acted contrary to her life long intentions under circumstances that raise many ethical and legal issues. A committee to defend the Liu home has been formed and this fundraiser is organized to assist the family in their struggle for justice.
Tickets for this event are $10/sliding scale. Pay on the night or contact OCAP for tickets ahead of time. If you have items to donate for the auction or want to help out at the fundraiser, call OCAP at(416) 925-6939.

CANADIAN ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-TORONTO:
FUNDRAISER FOR THE LIU FAMILY HOME:

This struggle, undertaken by the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) has been mentioned several times before here at Molly's Blog. It's a classic David and Goliath story with the children of Margaret Liu pitted against a wealthy "Christian" charity. The following is an appeal from OCAP for a fundraiser for the Liu family's court case.

CANADIAN ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-OCAP:
MORE NEWS FROM OCAP ON THE LIU FAMILY HOME:
Molly has blogged on this item a af few times before. Down Toronto way a Christian "charity" has convinced an recently deceased elderly person to will her estate to their greedy clutches. To say the least there is nothing new in this. Religious organizations have taken on the roll of vulture since time immemorial, and one of the great "secrets of growth" behind early Christianity was the encouragement of the faithful to leave their estates to the Church. Still... this is a particularly egregious case. Here's an announcement from the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) about their latest plans to scuttle this money grab.

SAVE THE HOME OF THE LIU FAMILY MEETING Thursday August 7‏
SAVE THE HOME OF THE LIU FAMILY, MEETING AT THE OFFICE OF OCAP,10 BRITAIN STREET (SOUTH OF QUEEN AND WEST OF SHERBOURNE)THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 6.00 PM
The Save the Home of the Liu Family Committee is working to prevent a well financed Christian charity from dragging Louise Liu into court and taking away the home that she and her disabled brother need.
Louise's mother, Margaret, was a poor woman who came to this Country from Hong Kong with her kids, shortly after the death of her husband. She worked to buy a small home and always intended to leave it to her children. However, a couple of years ago, when she was well into her 80s and, after she had had a series of strokes, a second Will was made and this home was left to the Chinese Christian Herald Crusades (Canada) Herald Monthly.
Representatives of the Chinese Gospel Church , which she attended, played a very big role in facilitating this. They assisted the elderly woman to prepare the will, did not tell her daughter this was happening and, then, immediately after Margaret died, presented Louise with this bombshell.
Louise feels her mother made a decision that was not in keeping with the plans and intentions she had had for years. Her state of mind at the time is a major issue and a strong legal case could be made in favour of Louise and her brother. However, the charity has huge resources and Louise almost none.
Our committee of friends and supporters is fighting for justice for this family. We have held actions at the Church and Charity, drawn up an online petition and plan to increase the pressure on them.
We are working to ensure that the Liu family gets the legal support it needs but we are also looking to use all forms of legitimate public pressure to expose the contradiction between the Christian teachings of the CCHC and its readiness to take this home from this family. Already, there has been a huge amount of coverage in the Chinese language media and the CCHC is the subject of a public debate on their ethics and their rather curious understanding of the Christian Gospel.

We badly need the support of those who believe in social justice in this community. Please attend our meeting if you can and invite others you think would be interested. If you can't attend but would like to be kept informed of upcoming events or would like more information, please give us a call us at (416) 856-0814

CANADIAN ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-TORONTO:
TWO NEW ITEMS FROM OCAP:
The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) continues to be as active as ever down in the throbbing centre of the universe, otherwise known as Toronto. Here's two new items, one an announcement of a demonstration this coming Thursday (July 17) and the other an update on the struggle to save the Liu family home.
...............................
City meets to discuss poverty reduction:
Two homeless men die just blocks away
On Monday, July 7, around supper time, a young Somali man in his mid- twenties was found dead in the Salvation Army Maxwell Meighen Hostel. On Thursday morning, July 10, Denis Bowen, 42, a native man known to many of us in the community, died outside a social housing building at 200 Sherbourne St.

We are not able to confirm for certain how these two men died. What we do know is that both men were homeless.

We should all be disturbed and outraged when poor people die in overcrowded hostels, or are found dead outside deteriorating social housing buildings operated by the city. For too many years, we have watched poor people in our community struggle on a daily basis without sufficient income, and we have watched as they try to survive, to find food, shelter, and safe affordable housing.

The mayor, and city politicians, want the public to believe that the city is taking care of the needs of the poor and the homeless - in reality, homeless men and women are suffering and dying on our streets. The City of Toronto has abandoned many poor and the homeless people who live on its streets and in its shelters.

Please join us THURSDAY, July 17th, to protest the city’s refusal to address poverty in our community and to speak out against the recent deaths of two homeless men who died last week in our community:

DATE: THURSDAY, July 17, 2008
TIME: 11 AM
LOCATION: Queen and Sherbourne St.

OCAP has been working with a committee of friends and supporters to fight for justice for this family. When such cases of injustice emerge in immigrant communities, it is often the case that the government funded organizations set up to represent those communities will not get involved. OCAP is, therefore, stepping in to do all it can to back this family. We have joined with other supporters to leaflet the Church and responded to attempts to silence Louise with threats of legal action.

CANADIAN ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-TORONTO:
SAVE THE LIU FAMILY HOME:
Molly has seen this situation before. Just like vultures, various churches gather about a dying person, carefully and slyly manipulating that person into signing over their estate to the church. It's a good tax free scam if you can get away with it. The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) is helping out the family of a recently deceased person in the Toronto area who have been victimized by this trick. Here's the story....
...........................................

PLEASE HELP SAVE THE LIU FAMILY HOME‏
PLEASE HELP SAVE THE LIU FAMILY HOME
THE CHINESE GOSPEL CHURCH, 450 DUNDAS STREET WEST (AT HURON)
THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 29, AT 10.45 AM
Below is the text of a leaflet we plan to distribute outside the Chinese Gospel Church in Chinatown. A family's home is being taken from them by a hugely well resourced church and charity, who have a very interesting understanding of how to apply the Christian Gospel. Please come out and support this family.
THE CHINESE GOSPEL CHURCH IS TRYING TO TAKE AWAY THE LIU FAMILY'S HOUSE
Please Help us Save their Home!
In 2004, eighty two year old Margaret Liu, weakened by a series of strokes, was in hospital and close to the end of her life. She had written a will leaving her modest house to her daughter Louise and her permanently disabled son. But, not long before she died, without her family being aware of it, she signed a new will leaving the home to a charity linked to the Chinese Gospel Church, the Chinese Christian Herald Crusades (Canada).
Margaret was in a very vulnerable condition at the time she signed this new will. Her daughter, who had cared for her in her later years, finds it impossible to believe that she would have chosen to leave her children without this home if she had been able to think clearly. During the years she had worked to pay for and maintain the property, her intention had always been to leave it for her own family.
We don't know what discussions took place between Church representatives and Margaret Liu in the days before she died. We do know, however, that they are more than ready to press their claim tot he Liu home regardless of any moral issues that arise. They are dragging the family into court and have the resources to fight a legal battle, while Louise Liu, currently a full time student, has no money to pay for legal representation.
The family will face great hardship if they lose their home while this Church and multi-national charity will survive and thrive without taking the property. We don't think that an organization that preaches the Christian Gospel can justify what it is doing to the Liu family. If you agree, we are asking for your help. We are asking you to:-
1. Contact the Church and let them know you want them to withdraw their claim to the Liu home. They are at (416) 977-2530.
2. If you want to be involved the effort to help this family, contact us.
3. Let us know if you, a family member or someone else you know has had a similar experience to the one facing Louise Liu.
Thanks for any and all support.
